Been noticing a few extra rattles and noises from my bike the last few week. i've been riding with ear defenders in so when i ride without them everyting cetianly seems noise, but i seem to get a bad vibration from the font end of my bike, anyone else noticed something similar.

Also i tightened my chain the other week ( a little too tight) and now it's very slack again, is this just my fault? new chain needed?

When you go from riding with earplugs to riding without you will always notice rattles and stuff. Most of the time nothing to worry about. If you have a bad vibration it could be a number of things. Check the tyre to make sure it is seated properly, is in good condition, and hasn't got something embedded in it, is it at the right pressure? Have you lost a wheel weight? Check the headstock bearings. Are they loose? Check the fork seals. Are they weeping fluid. If all of the above looks ok, stick your earplugs back in

Hmmm. If the chain was badly over-tightened then you could have knackered either your rear wheel bearings or (God forbid) the gearbox bearings. Hopefully it's neither but just keep it in mind if things get worse. Oh and make sure there's plenty of play in your chain - a good 30mm at the tightest spot.

see how far out you can pull the chain from the rear sprocket. If you can virtually pull it off the sprocket it's knackered. If you tightened the chain and its slack again already then its highly likely the chain is knackered.

The vibration is probably the chain as it rides over the front sprocket.

the chain makes a different noise, i know what it sounds like and i'm thinking about a new chain now anyway.
These vibrations seem to come from the front of my bike. how would i go about checking my bearings?

anyone know where to get a front paddock (with yoke support) from?

my bike needs a good tune up

My advice would be to PM either Sid Squid, Rictus or Embee for precise advice on this. If it is the gearbox bearings then it would (sadly) probably be cheaper to source a good second hand engine rather than have the cost of a repair which is likely to be much greater.

thanks dave, my bike is in with dave helm for a service this weekend, i'll get him to have a listen and see what he thinks. where'd you buy yours from and how much, i've got a rear stand, so don't wanna fork out for an abba stand and i thought a front stand (with yoke) would be best.

How's jo's dad?

How are you all keeping?

Do you know when knott end kicks off again, Ian was asking and i haven't been up for a while (very busy at work, i can't wait to go back to uni, it's easier :D)

no worries carl, just give me a shout if you get stuck.

Ian's bike is still being repaired, they have had to have a shed load of parts custom made. Insurance told him if they had assessed it properly they would have written it off.

Ian's arm is just about strong enough now, so docs have let him drive his car again, but warned him never ti ride again 'cos if he ever falls off again he would probably lose his arm. Post office are going to retire him on medical grounds, but in general he's ok and glad to have pulled through.

re the stand, mine's a micron and bought it from gerickes, I also bought a full range of yoke adapters for different bikes. Really well made and wouldn't do without it, much better than bottle jacks & sky hooks etc

catchya soon
Dave

Dave,
Glad to hear Ian is slowly improving. Please send him my regards.
Carl,
I remember my chain seemed to come to the end of its life quite quickly. It was ok for the first 20,000 miles or so (with a Scottoiler!) then started stretching almost as fast as I tried to keep it to the right amount of play. It did make a lot more noise towards the end as well! It made a real difference to the quality of the ride afterwards once I replaced it.
Regards to all
Trog
PS The 2005 rideout sounds interesting - I might sneak along on the Triumph if that's ok? Me and Dave/Jo can form the ex-sv group! Interestingly I have bumped into quite a few ex SV owners who now ride Sprints - it's still a bike with character!

he's one of life's hoarders who never sells 'owt

cheers for the well wishes guy's I will pass your thoughts on next time we see him

ok, sorted the vibration, turned out to be my double bubble screen at certain revs. sorted that with a bit of plastic wire casing :)

but the probem i have today is my speedo, and rev counter stop working.

i've noticed this a few times before but only happened for a second and usually when i'd hit a bump.

today i'm on the motorway and it stops showing anything for a good few miles.

Bike still runs ok but with no clocks it's a bit scary, i didn't realise how much i must look at them when i'm riding.

ANY HELP GREATFULLY RECEIVED :)
