Dude, the "new" shape is now 2 years old...the "curvy" is now 7 years old?
The old shape was cool in it's day, but so were acid wash jeans and mullets once...
I've been on both sides of the fence. I once wanted a pre K3 S more than the K3, even test rode a couple. Then I saw a fully faired, cowled, and huggered silver SK3 in a dealership and that was it. Lust at first sight...
I will admit, the K3 in stock form, off the dealership floor is not as attractive as the stock k2/k1...as my missus said to me about my SK3, "why did they sell it to you half finished?"
I shall have to post a pic of mine to lure you to the dark side ;)

Mullets ARE fashionable in England again! Seriously.
The old vs new argument will always rumble on.
Just an example - a friend of mine, visited a bike shop with me recently where a new shape SV was on display. He could not get over how bland the new SV is compared to the original and took some persuading that they were chiefly the same bike. Seriously.
The new shape is obviously loved by many and is still a great bike, it is just that I personally dislike the 'styling' so much that I know if i was in the market for a new bike today, I could not even contemplate the new SV 650/1000 just for their looks. But hey, thats just my opinion and only means anything to me!
I'd just like to add if i was to ride a naked, it would be the old shape. I think the new shape naked is very bland.
A fully faired new shape is however stunning, probably something to do with the r1 resemblance. Just my 2p.
If push comes to shove then I would buy a new shape sv1000, but only because of the engine, maybe what suzuki should have done was make a curvey sv1000, instead of the TL! Still love my curvey SV and I must admit after spraying the bike Rizla blue I can't really see myself getting rid of it at all. Unless someone gives me £7,500 and I can get a new Sprint ST

I'm not big on the naked look myself, but just a few days ago, I saw a pic on one of the SV sites (maybe here?) of a K3 nekkid with a belly pan, twin lamps ala Speed Trip and all the plastic was the 03 Copper color. It looked REALLY sweet. I think you can take almost any bike, and with tastefully selected accesories and the right color, make it look pretty decent...

Yes..sigh... what will we do when the next SV comes out? Personally, I can't wait to see what the next S looks like.

I can't get over your comment that mullets are back in. I'm still in shock..

Understood. Each to his own. But we both are biased, for very obvious reasons. We both have time, sweat and lots of $$$ invested in our choices. But what's interesting is the reaction of the person in the street. They often know nothing about motorcycles or any kind of kit for that matter. But often they have that sense, which we all do to some extent, of knowing when something looks good or just right.
I kid you not, almost everytime I go out on my bike, I will get mad compliments on my bike, from men, women, college kids, high school kids, gangbangers, black, white, take your pick. Last week, some chick in a pickup truck next to me, pulls out a video cam and starts filming me beckons me to wave! WTF? In over a year though, I have never once gotten any kind of reaction even remotely negative. Even other sportbikers on supersports give the bike props.
So yes, this is the subject that will never die. It might be down to a cultural thing. Here in the US, when it comes to kit, we worship the new, the latest, we let go of the old pretty easily. But perhaps the fact that mullets are again in vogue speaks volumes
Sexy si, No question, if they made the SV1000 in the old shape, I would buy one tomorrow. Just cant bring myself to love the looks, which is a bit of a shame (but obviously saves me some money.........and probably my marriage! :? )

steve h, i dont see how anyone can dislike the look of a bike as much as u do about the pointy Sv. i like em both, i just prefer the k3 onwards is all.
do u really hate it that much or have all the arguements on this site pushed u further and further into hatred?
ive never seen a 'bad' looking bike that i can remember. and to my mind the old and new shape SV's arnt different enough to be able to love one and hate the other, whichever way round.
they have the same design except one is more pointy than the other.
I can't understand why they changed it. The curvey got good reviews sold in droves and rides great. Maybe it was Suzuki trying to make a R1 wannabe or did they have a heads up on the release of the new Fazer.
The sharpe one is alright, but given the choice I would keep my old one.
The sharpe one is probably a nice bike.

Its not the bike that i dislike (hate is a bit of a strong word!) after all, it is much the same thing.
It is the 'styling'. I really dont get the current craze by the manufacturers for the overly 'pointy' look of bikes. Signs are that the manufacturers are already moving back to a slightly more rounded look.
I honestly think Suzuki got the styling totally wrong with the new bike. And yes, I PERSONALLY dislike it that much to put me off buying another SV. SORRY! :?
After owning me SV for 2 years and with another 3-4 years life left in it. Then I won't be buying an sv, but It will give me time to save up for a pointy one of these

That is in fact going to be my next bike, or possibly the newer version of it by the time I can afford it and the insurance.
My plan is to keep the SV till it's just not worth repairing anymore and buy one of those to run alongside it. Then I can use the SV for more menial duties and the Sprint for longer distance stuff.
Oh, and then I will have a spare bike so can use the SV on the track.

I can't understand why they changed it.
They did what ALL the bike manufacturers do which is update their models to keep them fresh and desirable to their target customers. 3 years seems to be the average for sportbikes, because those are the models that represent the leading edge of motorsport technology. The internals are only one side of the equation, the other being styling. Whereas you can build cruisers for year after year without changing their styling, the people who buy sportbikes (and I include the SV in that category) demand the latest and freshest, in the metal, and in the plastic, inside and topside.
The old SV had a good run at 4 years but, if did not already, it would have started to acquire that unmistakable aroma of "old and past it" EVEN if it had the most up to date mechanicals, and it would have slowly lost sales every year as riders would have drifted off to snazzier machines. As it is they don't have to, because Suzuki did a pretty nice job of freshening up an already great bike.
The curvey got good reviews sold in droves and rides great.
The current shape SV gets good reviews, sells in droves and rides great too!
Exclusive!!! Pointy monstrosity top seller of 2004 shock! (was that a passable attempt at a British tabloid headline?)
http://www.localrevs.co.uk/Reviews/Bikes/SV650S.htm
Maybe it was Suzuki trying to make a R1 wannabe
And that woulkd be undesirable because?...
Now if you want pointy, take another gander at the 2002 - 2003 R1. Nothing but creases, points and angles, and pure sex on 2 wheels AFAIC. Personally i much prefer it over the current R1, so I understand your frame of mind on this, trust me :)
The sharpe one is alright, but given the choice I would keep my old one.
The sharpe one is probably a nice bike.

Guys can I offer my 2 euros worth? I personally believe that certain bikes do not conform to the normal marketing strategy of the motorcycle manufacturers.I take on board and accept as valid the point regarding needing to freshen things up after a few years.
In all of this we are forgetting something very important and this I believe is the fact that the SV is a bike that must surely fall in to the "cult status" category? Thereby many normal rules and arguments will become invalid.
I personally loved the look of the curvey but bought a K3. With the Ducati I actually think that the 916 to 998 range are far greater eye candy, but as with the SV I decided to opt for the later model, more based on the fact that more advances and improvements had been made.I am not at all sure if anything I have just written adds any value at all to the discussion!  8)

That is an excellent point. The other cult bike in Suzuki's stable that fits that description has to be the 'Busa, which I guess is the Big Daddy of the "curvy" design school. It hasn't been updated, cosmetically at least, for 8+ years(?). I love and respect that bike, and toy with the idea of owning one one day, yet at the same time, I can't get past it's pig-on-steroids resemblance. I wonder what the reaction will be when that cult bike gets a facelift? ;)
Just to stir the pot, what do folks out there think of the new Gixxer 1K? I love it myself, (yes even the can!). I do wish that Suzuki would call it quits on the whole toothpaste tube racing graphics look though. The other OEMS all now make sportbikes in solids and metallics (or at least toned down subtle graphics ala R6) and they look better for it IMHO
After a decent clean today....
Few more mods left on the list but its getting there
