Just want to have them apart at some point. Diagram of what I could expect would be nice. Basically, I wanted to know how to get the sliders off of the stantions and are the sliders full of oil or is this contained within the stantions.

I2G has sorted me out with a diagram, but the above questions are still not clear to me. If you could help with some answers I would appreciate it.

Is there enough detail in the maintenance manual to be able to do the job? Do I need special tools?

To get the forks apart:

Said simple, there are other bits to remove/undo but if you can't work them out don't do any of it*.

Undo upper fork clamp and handlebar clamp bolts, ('S'), slacken top bolts.
Slacken bolts at bottom of forks, just a half turn or so.
Take forks off the bike.
Remove top nut, empty the oil out. Refit top nut and spring - helps restrain damper rod.
Remove the bolt at the bottom of the fork, this may prove difficult, it's often easy to initially loosen the bolt, but when you've got it moving the whole fork inner rotates and means the bolt won't loosen any further, if it does, try compressing the fork a bit, no joy? Get a broom handle and cut a coarse taper on the end of it, tap it into the fork, spring removed of course, and restrain the damper rod that way.
Remove the fork shroud, take out the retaining wire ring.
Hold the fork lower and pull the stanchion out sharply - a la slide hammer - this will knock the upper bush and fork seal out of the lower leg.

Bingo it's apart :!:

Check out ron ayers, there's fiches on there with exploded diagrams. They're not assembly guides so it's not really ideal, but they show enough of what goes where that they might help...
