View Full Version : That really wasn't clever
The way everyone departed for the bridge tonight was little more than utterly stupid. We park there every Friday night on double yellows. Apart from the rogue traffic wardens issuing tickets (or not) we are left alone and don't get bothered. However recently there have been complaints to the police about the noise. Courtesy of Mark (Rictus) they were reliably informed that the SV gang were not the culprits, rather the Chelsea bridge brigade that turn up, late on.
If you want us to be banned from parking there, well you sure made a good start tonight. I went in to Nero's and apologised to the staff and assured them that such events would not happen again. To say that they and probably the rest of Frith street businesses were less than pleased by the display would be an understatement.
So why don't you all grow up a bit, and have consideration for where we park and not ruin it for ourselves.
Seriously ****ed off. :!: :!: :!: :!:
Ape, I couldn't agree more.
We could so easily receive a lot of hassle from the local people on this, having recently received complaints from the Police. Up until now we could safely say that we weren't responsible for this, but following tonight, that's going to be very difficult.
This is now my local SV meet, it's a great gathering, and I'd be really annoyed if we had to be moved on because of the actions of a few.
Bouncing off the rev limiter is certainly not mechanically sympathetic, and nor is it very pleasant when the backfire is a couple of feet from your ear - thanks!

Agreed. Everyone likes to give a little throttle on departure, but bouncing an SV off the rev limiter and doing the kill switch trick 10 times over isn't very bright.

I have to say that I was a bit surprised by the amount of noise going on.
Yes I know I was leaving at the same time as the rest of you, but I know I wasn't making too much of a racket..... However a few of the SV's were extemely loud tonight, and reving them to the limiter didn't help matters much...
I don't think it's a god idea for everybody to leave at the same time, it seems to make matters worse. If the Police had still been there I bet it would have been a lot quieter....
Have to say that I agree with Ape on this one. I know I'm not a regular, but is "our" home and I'd hate to see us all stoped from parking there in future.
.
I seriously doubt that I will be there next week as a consequence of tonights actions. It would not be beyond the realms of rational thinking that it is quite possible that the police will be there next week ready to issue tickets for plates and cans and anything else they can find.
Thanks a bunch :x :x :x :x
Im a bit sorry about that. Not realy like that me, i am quite most of the time.
But not all noise completley my doing but will admit to my part. Sorry.
People trying to put their knee in my exhaust, is what causes me the problem.
People trying to put their knee in my exhaust, is what causes me the problem.
I am trying to think of a polite answer to that but Im struggling right now... I know what youre getting at riccardo and frankly you can get stuffed if you are blaming me for putting my knee over the exhaust for your behaviour.
Points for your attention:
1. When you started your engine I was right behind the can putting on my jeans. You revved the nuts off it causing my hair to be blown around considerably. I didnt ask for that or do anything - YOU did that to START with.
2. I put my knee over your exhaust as we have done on other occasions with no effects whatsoever. What you choose to do afterwards is ENTIRELY your choice.
3. When you decided to be a complet pr@ with the backfiring, I was on my bike well away from you, so how the hell you can insinuate I am responsible for your stupidity when Im nowhere near you is beyond me. What YOU did is down to you... frankly its pretty pathetic to blame me putting my knee over your exhaust for inducing you to do what you did....
right Im off to bed... think Im with BigApe on this one, frankly dont see the point of attending next week.... after all I wouldnt want anyone to misbehave due to me standing behind there bike or within 100 yards of it...
before you get on your high horse, yes it was ALL of us responsible for tonight but some more than others.
To be honest I think you're over-reacting. It was a little noisy from one end yes, but hardly the noisiest I've heard it from the Massive.
There have been several times when the Massive has been responsible for far greater noise and commotion than that although not for a while now. Okay it's not big and not clever but just a little self-expression from some peeps now that spring seems to have arrived.
Certainly the police haven't bothered us previously and I very much doubt that they will now as this is a rather rare occurance. As for local businesses, I think they're more likely to prosper than lose out as this adds a little colour to the "street scene" of Soho. Nero's I assure you is well used to it and enjoys a rather good turnover on a Friday night, a lot of which comes from us bikers.
On another note, it was an excellent meet and so good to see so many old and new faces. Loads of bikes and I, for one, enjoyed myself. The ride to the Bridge certainly wasn't dull either. Good fun - and if anybody got left behind, apologies.

thats true... and for those of us who found it in the end it was quite good  .... and for those of us who went to the wrong bridge well at least you can go home having done a bit of sightseeing in London

Si, in general terms I do agree with you. It is better to try and be a little considerate.
I know you're worried about making the Soho massive look bad and having problems caused, but once the chelsea lot (I assume that's who it is) turn up, the noise trebles over what it was like when we left and it doesn't stop until everybody leaves.
So, really, we're still the good guys by a long way.
Plus, as Greg suggested, the bikes meeting on a Friday night is pretty much considered a bit of an attraction. I know I watched more than a few japanese tourists taking pictures of the bikes and alot of people walking past talking about it, most of them impressed.
And it can't be said that Neros really suffers at our hands.
I am trying to think of a polite answer to that but Im struggling right now... I know what youre getting at riccardo and frankly you can get stuffed if you are blaming me for putting my knee over the exhaust for your behaviour.

To start i did not realise that you were there when i did start my engine, and it was not revved up that much, just a bit. After that yes i did play arround, you did not say anyting, if you did i would have gladly stopped.
2. I put my knee over your exhaust as we have done on other occasions with no effects whatsoever. What you choose to do afterwards is ENTIRELY your choice.
I know this has been done in the past. Im not complaining just noting.

Never said you were responsible for that, it was a seperate issue. I cant be that bothered to write a complete essay at 1am to explain all my wrong dooings.
before you get on your high horse, yes it was ALL of us responsible for tonight but some more than others.
My post does accept part blaim. And does say sorry.
But talking about getting on a high horse, this seems pretty much it. Anything about me and you seems to be taken out of all proportion, all the time. It was not just me that caused the noise.
This is just getting stupid.
This is just getting stupid.
Agreed. So stop.

Something you should all be aware of:
As I was the end bike (closest to the junction) I had the advantage of noticing that two of the "taxi bikes" were catching it all on video, and that may be our downfall. We take up space that would like to park in and I know you could say that the bikes in Soho are an attraction these days, but it's well known after 11pm when all the bikes from the bridge get down there.
As I said in my post above, it's worse when everyone leaves together. 3 or 4 bikes at a time are not going to cause a problem, 20 or so is a bit different...
.
Yep. I agree with BigApe.
I left with the first group, however I was in two minds weather to go. Infact after the noise started getting "out of hand" i turned my bike off, and was talking to Billy/BigApe.
Im supprised the convoy didnt get stopped by the police, to be honest, as it was overly noisy at every set of lights we reached (at least until i got lost  )
All things in moderation though, its fun occasionally, just dont sit there pinning the throttle with the clutch in. A time and place for things, etc..
as it was overly noisy at every set of lights we reached
Yeah. Great fun though!
All things in moderation though, its fun occasionally
Exactly. And as it's only very occasionally where's the harm? Particularly as I've previously stated it's been much noisier in the past, with last night being quite tame in comparison.
I do however have some concerns over the lack of mechanical sympathy that some people have regarding their bikes (rev limiter from cold? ). For me this is a much serious matter  .

Chill out guys
Someone lets their hair down :D & someone gets their back up
I think the middle ground is somewhere in between
It's unlikely to happen again, at least for a while :D
I had a good evening, even if I forgot I had a brand new tyre on the front
After having had a night to sleep on it... and I have a few things to summarise
- It was a really great night, great turn out, new and old faces, good atmosphere 8)
- Well received by the public, lots of people looking, taking pictures, etc 8)
- No visible traffic wardens, but perhaps a little more hassle from the police than we're usually used to :?
I have to say, I was quite embarrassed in the last few minutes. Especially thanks to my ears ringing, following the string of backfires from TSM's exhaust.
I like our SV group, I feel we don't represent the boys with toys (and small knobs) brigade that the average Gixxer gathering demonstrates (Not aimed at you Steve :) ). It has become a bit of an attraction on Friday nights, for the locals, tourists, and Dennis.
However, I can't help but notice that the Police are getting more interested. The last time I went a few weeks ago, Rictus was pulled over by a local plod explaining there had been complaints specifically about noise. Last night, unusually, we had 2 police cars watching us, instead of the usual one.
I think, unknown to us, we're drawing a lot of attention to ourselves. It may take more than a Nero's loyalty card to get served next time.
looks like I missed all the fun! ;-)
I think the slightly over-zealous officer last night was just that. Certainly it's unusual. As for two patrol cars, they're often there, truly nothing to worry about. Getting served in Nero's? They won't even have remembered, they're clientele is so colourful anyway.
If there is a threat to the Frith St venue then it comes soley from the loud R1/Gixxer crowd that gets there around 10.30pm and stays till very late. Their antics at 1am completely over-shadow anything we could do at what is a perfectly reasonable hour.
As Mr Toad says, chill out guys ;).

For my part i'll say this much.
While TSM was givvin it some on ethe backfire front i was happily smiling at him and in some way encouraging him
Now i'm pretty new to this SV scene and the friday nights but i can only observe this.
Last week Carsik and i left Soho at about 12.30am. Just before leaving we witnessed 4 or 5 plain clothes cops put a couple of people in the back of a van taht arrived. We futher observed another2 plain clothes liten to the iir earpieces before heading off somewhere.
Ever considered that the police presence has nothing to do with us lot. That there is other actual crime goig on around us that we are totaly oblivious to?
Rideots---- are they also to be limited to 3 or 4 at a time cos the noise is gonna be too much? part of having a bike is the sound. We all enjoy that and thats why we all have a variation of end cans on our bikes. Yes they are predominantly for saftey, secondly what? HP? Noise...plain and simple.
I agree that we could be more considerate but then we could also say this abot whe 4 or 5 peeps travel home in the same direction. And that not central london that we travel thru. those people expect some peace and quite. Living or working in Soho you accept that its a 24hr city centre you are in. And live their by choice. Soho aint exactly a cheap slum part of londo is it?
i agree with the philosophy of not pooping (edited by BigApe  ) on your own doorstep of course but i think we are good more than we are bad in soho....and if we maintain that ratio then everyone is happy.

Red Police cars (and there was one of them last night) are DPS (Diplomatic Protection Squad) and don't really care much about the bikes in Soho. One of the others was a Armed Response Vehicle (big yellow spot on the roof), so again, I don't think we interest them much.
They will, however get extremely pi$$ed off if we behave like that in front of them. As pointed out, there is a lot of "real" crime going on in the streets of London, but we face a "civil" issue rather than a police one. Any complaint will feed its way back to the local council and then they will put the pressure on the bikers in Soho, although this may well include support from local plod.

ok everbody has a valid point let's put it down to experince and forget it. we all love biking it would be a shame to lose friends and an exellcent meeting place over some silly antics. we have all been there done that. so kiss and make up  i hope to see you all there next week this soho meet has finally given me someting to look forward to during the week would be a HUGE shame to lose it all live for today dont make foes just friends please!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Woke up this morning in just the same mood that I was earlier. However having had time to reflect, I have cooled down somewhat. I STILL think that the exit last night was stupid because of the reasons already mentioned, but then this is everyones meeting place not just mine. I appreciate that leaving in a blaze of full throttle v-twins with race cans is cool, but not from there. That is our home and if we want to keep it as such then we should respect our neighbours. I agree that we create a lot of interest from the people that visit that area, but at the same we are also creating the WRONG impression to the people that matter in Frith Street, the owners of the businesses. Further to that there are plenty of people that attempt to sit outside Nero's to have their coffee and chat. They are also none to pleased when people are reving their engines right in their face. The restaurant next door to Nero's REALLY doesn't like us and didn't do before last night. We have got away for so long parking there because of the type of people that we are. QUIET un-offending and respectful. Unfortunately recently the Chelsea Bridge brigade have found there way to Frith Street and have made things considerably worse. I am not trying to chastise anyone here as I have no right to do so, I am simply trying to explain the situation and express my feelings.
Thanks for listening, here endith the sermon.
I shall now get down from my soap box and climb back under the stone that I obviously crawled out of.

Police from the local police stations enjoy there coffee spots as well as we do and they also have nero and bar italia loyalty cards and in warm weather plenty of good looking females or males to look at!!!. But yes one car was an armed response unit and the other DPG. They are not going to get involved with us as they could get an armed call at any time and would be frowned upon for taking time out to deal with traffic matters that is why they have a traffic unit. Most local plod would not know an exhaust from a throttle but do know traffic offences unless they own a bike themselves.
I had to leave early so do not know of the events that have started this thread but from what I have read if people are going to take the michael in front of police, whatever there unit then they will start issuing tickets and be in more of a foul mood for having to get out the car to deal with it when they were having a break and a coffee themselves.
Last night was my first SOHO meet and I met lots of great people and thouroughly enjoyed myself and stayed longer than I had intended too and ended up getting an earful from wifey. I will attend more often as I work in London and it would be a shame to see it all finish or move. :D

The cops there last night really didn't like us, well me anyway. When I parked up at 8:30 and covered up my plate I was called over to one of the cars and this was immediately followed by a roasting for covering up my plate and I was then told to expose the plate, which I did. I can understand why they had a go at me, I suppose doing it right in front of them isn't clever, but then every bike other than mine had the plate covered up and my SV is one of the few completely legal ones. I did have a bike cover with me, which I completely forgot about at the time, but I think if I had used it I wouldn't have been there much longer.
It does seems that they are not happy with something as there were up to three cars there at one point.
Right now I think we need to carry on as normal.
I hope this thread though makes some people aware that their behavioiur affects everyone. I hope this thread also makes people more aware of the feelings/sensitivities of other members of the massive and takes that into account before acting.
I have the privilege of knowing you guys and an appreciation that I wouldnt be in such a good way as I am after all the things that have happened recently if it hadnt been for your support.
I also appreciate that I can be as my sig says, full throttle and full on.... those Ive talked to appreciate that is partly because of my previous job and was and still is my mechanism for coping and dealing with the most horrific things - stuff anyone else wouldnt want to imagine. Its why I am why I am.
I do worry that I can be too full on at times, especially as my humour developed to deal with things. I would also like to think that if anyone takes offence or if I step over the line (please remember with my background my lines of what consitutes offence are way off of anyone elses) that people also see me as approachable and talk to me, or pm me or tell me.
Im presuming that since no-one has that youre happy for me to carry on entertaining you all

Park where every you like on Friday night in Soho, but I hope you like your own company
couple of things, you don't go rubbing the old bills nose in it, of course they're ****ed off, so blatant covering of your plate is a bit tackles, now placing your jacket over your bike, which happens to cover the plate is another thing entirely.
I understand the sound thing and the "everyone else is doing" it stuff, and it doesn't bother me that much, but Ricardo the backfires? One two maybe but unless you're Dutch (anyone having been to Assen will know), in whch case a genetic disorder is to blame, don't take the p*ss, half a dozon in front of me with no knees in sight behind you? being half deaf myself and still finding it annoying gives you some idea of the effect and impression it left, if you don't care just think even if the Nero's staff don't say anything about it, the police don't react at all, it's still possible to come back from getting your coffee to find a very neat row of SV bits where you engine used to be

fyi re the previous job... dont tend to go much into it since some people dont really want the details but I will since you asked. Anyone who doesnt want to know stop reading.... NOW!!!!
used to work for the national hitec crime unit as a computer forensics officer. I would forensically image a computer and then examine it. 98% of my work involved the investigation and prosecution of paedophiles so when I say Ive seen everything thats possible to see I mean it.
I dont usually talk about it but I do think sometimes people need to understand that when you have had a job for 2 years looking at over 10,000 pornographic images a day of just about everything there possibly could be it does tend to affect you. And it is why I am probably the most open, honest person you will meet with the dirtiest sense of humour that you will encounter because it is the mechanism that everyone in that environment adopts to be able to deal with stuff other people can only imagine.
