Just been having a conversation with a friend about whether there is any point using Optimax in the SV. Obviously I cant try this out yet but I wondered if you guys use it and if the bike "feels" any different?

Had to use it all the time in my Mitsi Evo as it was a Jap import and therefore designed to run on 100RON fuel.

Does an SV have a knock sensor and able to take the higher rating into account? Or is it pointless and I should just stick to any petrol I can get?! lol

The only real advantage is slightly better fuel consumption and it makes a big difference as regards carb icing - so if you have an SV that suffers badly from this (as I do) then it's worth it during the winter.

I will probably still use it if I am near one, the refining process has to be better than it is for supermarket special brew.

Plus I am so used to going to Shell garages that other types are confusing to me...!

a common misconception

Optimax and other 'premium' brands are supposed to have additives to keep your engine cleaner, etc. as well as a higher octane rating. In practice you'd have to be pushing it right to the edge to notice any difference

It's all a trick of the marketing department

I used to use it when it first came out in my Audi 80 Sport, and yes it could easily have been the placebo effect, but I am sure it ran smoother!

I am sure you are right tho, all marketing fluff...!

it all comes out of the same pumps at the collection station, never bother with any fancy fuel, (might have to start now with the ccm  )

A lot of the petrol stations dispatch from the dame depot anyway.

When i was at school we did a trip to an Esso place down near heathrow, BP and shell were filling up there as well. They just add additives to the base petrol

I can't talk about how Optimax affects bikes but I can for cars and IMHO it can make a huge difference. I ran my car for six months on ordinary 95 stuff, finally gave in to people who had been bugging me to try Optimax and it made a huge difference. The engine was smoother, more responsive, improved performance and there was a small improvement in fuel consumption.

Lol, it could be described as that. For a bog standard car I don't think its worth paying the extra for Optimax, for the more tuned variety its definity worth it.

In the bike mag tests they were getting a power hike of 1-2% IIRC, but a greater cost increase. But on the other hand, you should get increased mileages, and it's more stable- so if your bike is laid up, it won't jelly up so fast or evaporate so quickly (actually both the same thing I think :) )

I use Tesco's own and change the oil every 3k

I always use "a drop of the good stuff" when it's on offer. I actually plan my commute filling to 1 or 2 Shell stations. It definately gives me better fuel ecconomy but it does cost more in the first place. The warning light comes on just over 100 miles on normal, about 115 - 120 on Optimax.

Oh, and the backfires are definately better too

optimax does work well on tuned engines, but for your normal everyday car engine then i wouldnt worry about it, my rs turbo used to pink at high rpms if it didnt have optimax in it, so it does make a difference

i would use it if the compression ratio or rev limit was raised on the sv

I think you might get a little more benefit if you've done the ignition advance, IIRC... I can't remember why.

It smells nicer when it burns too :)
