I'm sure this has come up many times before but what's the average fuel consumption people get and any riding tips for having a high figure?

I got 46MPG in my last tank and seem to get between 45 and 50 consistently.

I get between 45 and 55mpg, depending on if I'm thrashing it or cruising.
You'll find that stuff like cruising at 70-80 will give you a good figure; town riding is bad, cos you accelerate alot.

I've been doing 90ish along the motorway going to work. I'll try to slow that down a bit and see if it makes a difference

when running in, 62 mpg

since then, it has averaged out at 42 mpg :D - this is mostly from commuting around town, but it also tends not to change that much when out on a ride, probably because I've usually got the throttle wide open

42-44 from my last few tanks, they have been.... spirited rides.

I can't wait to do a couple of runs to portsmouth (115 miles), should get a good return.

Yeah, to be honest, for true urban mileage, don't expect to get anywhere near that. I few tanks ago, I got 83 miles out of the tank before the light came on. That was entirely London mileage though.

I was getting a bit worried, but the figure's risen to the usual 110 miles before the light - but that does tend to be caning it along the motorway etc, with hard accelerations.

At the end of the day, it's what you make of it. Ride hard fast, with quick slow downs and speed ups, and you'll use a lot of fuel. Ride gently on long unobstructed journies, and you'll get great mileage.

... I got 83 miles out of the tank before the light came on.

Gulp - you could easily do that sort of mileage on a track day at a fast circuit.

Make mental note: fill bike up at lunchtime on trackday.

About 55-60mpg all motorway driving at no more than 80ish... (45 mile each way commute on 95% motorway)

I don't ride around towns so I have no idea what the urban economy is going to be...

i've filled up 4 times or so since I bought the bike and every time i get 125 miles till the 'reserve' light comes on.

seems to be 127 usually :?

not sure what this works out at in mpg, someone else can work it out

I have a restricted bike (Fuel Injected) and even though the CPU will not allow the engine to rev past 7500 rpm, I can never get better than 40-45mpg. And that's cruising at 70-80 on the A1.

just worked it out,

between 39-47mpg depended on type of run, to be honest i dont ever do a 'steady' ride, theres always bits that turn into a mad thrash.....i think that between about 105-125 miles before the ight comes on.

I just read the line

theres always bits that turn into a mad thrash.....i think that between about 105-125 miles

and mentally filled in, "theres always bits that turn into a mad thrash.....i think that between about 105-125 miles per hour, the fuel consumption becomes really bad." :)

45mpg +/- 3mpg usually.

OK... Either I'm getting really good economy or my bikes doing something right...

Just worked out my distance to fuel light flashing.

240-260 depending on how much filtering I'm doing. Works out to 150 to 160ish. Good steady 80mph riding, or dodgy speedo....

sounds like something is goosed. You seem to be getting double the milage of anyone else here.

Don't misread the km's that are in there (sorry should've put that in...)

I'm getting 140-160 miles compared to others 100-125 milage. But I am doing all motorway work with the exception of a mile or two to the motorway from home and less than that from the motorway to work...

About 55-60mpg IIRC

It is worth taking into consideration if the bike is faired, or naked; and the rider weight - these will all affect the mpg figures significantly.

I get my worse milage on highway at steady speeds of 70mph or more

best milage in town.

that's my expereince with over 800 fillups so far

wind resistance is milage killer

I hate these type of threads, but I'm pervesely impressed that I have one of the lowest figures lol.

I calculated

35MPG!

Good eh? Petrols for burning is it not? May as well burn it in a spirited way. Might be a bit out due to the tank spacers however.

Dan.

The price of gas seems to be going up a lot round here. A couple of months ago we were down at 78.9 for unleaded, now it's up to 84.9 at my supermarket.

My car is diesel and that's up to nearly 90 a litre! Some of those crap private petrol stations are charging 98 a litre!

Thank god for the VanVan, £4 approx to fill up - and 130 miles - :D

OK fiolled up this morning on my way to work...

My speedo is fine - readion within 2km's of what I was expecting @ 144kms for a round trip to work. That took 6.6 litres so...

1.45 gallons
90 miles

62mpg filtering on the way to work and a near constant 70ish on the way home.

The bike is an 'S', I weigh about 70kg's and learn over the tank to get out of the wind in free flowing traffic so I guess all that works in my favour...

I've just realised i've been using US gallons not UK (thanks google) that means i got 50mpg, not 42 and my car returns 35mpg on long trips, not the 29.9 i thought it would

I used to get 180 miles to the tank before I fitted a race can now I only seem to get ~150

what happens with ther fuel light? does it do anything other than flash when you hit 'reserve'? i've always filled up around then cos i'm worried about running out!

I've often wondered why motorbikes are so heavy on fuel. The best consumption here is about 67 mpg if I'm right (running in) and the rest are around the 45 mark. Think about it, a bike should get much more than that. My Citroen Saxo 1.5 Diesel gets 62 average and 74 on the motorway. It weighs about 1000 Kgs and has a frontal area the size of about 4 SVs. Other bikes are also heavy on petrol, so has someone done the physics? Drag coefficient, mass, velocity, etc. I know we usually ride bikes faster, etc. but still, some guys have done some very tame rides on a tankfull and not got very impressive figures. What about a test, with an SV and a small modern car, next to each other up the M5 at 70 mph for 200 miles, then check to see who's used the most fuel? My guess is the SV. Strange, that. Any suggestions why?
Jon.

While this is just off the top of my head and i've not put much thought into it one possibility is bike engines are generally more tuned and there for use more petrol. You don't see a 1 litre car pushing 180bhp in anyform, that's for sure.

I guess my SV must be doing something right then - I get about 180 miles (UK) before my light starts flashing, and about another 10-15 before it stays on all the time.

None of that is motorway mileage either. Just a bit of commuting in town (5 mile round trip to/from work) and playing in country roads for fun.

What does that work out to be MPG wise? Someone? I'm poo at this kind of working out!

(Oh yeah, for comparison's sake - I'm 8st 7lb on a '99 Svs with full fairing.)

I find that on a good ride out i see about 100 -110 mile in return for a tank of juice.

In reply to the cars getting beter mpg, I would have thought that the state of tune is definately a factor. plus where an average ztec car is hitting the limiter, the sv is just hitting peak torque. more revs = burning more petrol! plus i think bikes run a little ritcher. could be wrong mind, just my take on the idea. I think if you rode a bike like an old dear drove her car you would see a brilliant return in fuel consumption! i remember reading an article in 'bike' a few years ago, about how far they could get on a litre of fuel (or summat like that) and some bikes where getting around 100 mpg (including gsxr's n cbr's).

Always around the 50 mark... 55 if I keep the revs low and take it easy, just under 50 if I push it abit harder. Much more fun with the lower mpg :D

130 miles.. 9 quid... works out as 55miles a UK gallon. Can get more but that makes life dull.
don't bother with any of that Super unleaded stuff as it don't seem to make much of a difference for the price. Though it does help calm down the carb iceing, but you can buy some off the shelf stuff for that.

Glad I dont live in London, mines a nice blat down the A38 most days :D quite an easy going journey, just put the minidisc on and chill the journey out.

Although I still got good mileage screaming through the welsh mountains :D

Almost exactly what I get for my 12mile round commute to Oxford. God knows how people are getting 160+ miles to a tank!?

I get about 38-40 on the Gixer 600. I normally put in about 14 litres which is about 110-120 miles on the trip meter. 14 litres is about 3.1 gallons. That's on a "normal" ride of a bit of commuting and a bit of pleasure riding. Sunday blasts give me about 100 miles before the light comes on (again about 14 litre fill up), although it has been as low as 83 miles before....

My K1 SV would do 145-160 before the light came on. That dropped down to about 110 when I had all the tuning done.....
