View Full Version : Arrgggh! Rear wheel spacer prob.

I have just got my bike back from my local dealer - picked it up Monday night, after having a new chain and sprockets fitted (and a new choke cable).

Anyway, tonight I decide to wack it up on the paddock stand and have a proper look. Firstly, the wheel seems quite hard to turn I thinik the brake must be binding a bit. But it wasn't like that before. Then I notice the spacer on the RHS isn't in straight! I can see a huge gap! It just doest look right at all. Anyway the bike will have to go back, but boy am I pi$$ed off.

How much damage is this likley to have caused? Any comment or advice you can give me for when I take It back?

I also got charged 3 hours labour for the Chain, sprockets and choke cable. Does that sound right?

cant say how long it should take myself, but 3 hours sound excessive! and EXPENSIVE!

u shouldnt have to put up with that at all. see if u can get that labour charge down or completly gone.

as u have already paid though i wouldnt go in there guns blazing, u want them to like u. if no luck, then go mental :D

easier said than done though.

The one on the axle? Can't actually think of any way you could get it to fit squint, unless it's bent...

It could be the spacer form the sprocket carrier that's been put in the wrong way round and then the wheel's been forced into the swingarm. If so then they've been grossly negligent.

Three hours labour? No way. An hour should have done it.

Yep, its the one on the brake side (prolly why I didn't spot it right away)

It does look kinda bent/twisted I'm going to try and take a pic

Jonboy, Its clear of the swing arm I think its the brake disk rubbing

(If you have the PDF of the manual it's item 4 on page 6-29)

Ah so it's the round spacer that fits next to the caliper bracket? I'd have to see a picture to make a comment. If you unbolt the caliper and drop it (while still attached t the torque arm) does the wheel turn freely then?

I'd have this back to the dealer immediately if it were me.

Just had an email from svpilot and here's the picture:

As you can see the spacer is at an angle and is either poorly fitted or the axle bolt as been bent I would think (though God knows how).

Apparently it's now at the dealers.

The bit that looks as if it's bent is a flange fitted to the spacer, rather than the spacer itself, it is possible to push it back into place and it's most unlikely that any damage will have been caused, it's also unlikely that it would be able to restrain the rear wheel in any significant way, so, if the wheel is hard to turn, it's not probable that this is the reason.

All the same, it's hardly inspiring that the spacer has been fitted so.
You've spent money, you're not happy, take it back, I'm sure that they'll want to set it right, any business worthy of your money will certainly do this, if not, name and shame.

Three hours might, I stress might, be excessive, did you have an endless chain fitted? Unlikely but possible and if so it would require significantly more dismantling to fit than a split chain, also it can be very difficult to remove the choke holders on the carbs, as the carb bodies are made of a very soft Zinc alloy, and are easily damaged, softly softly is the intelligent way to go, but this can take a little longer.
Talk to them, any funny answers and duff body language should be clear.

I have just got the bike back, They pretty much told me the same. I thought that the flange was fixed to the spacer (perhaps spot welded) but it is free to move :? They just pushed it back. They said there is no sign of the wheel binding at all :? I will give it a turn again tonight.

They said the reason the job took so long was because they had problems removing the choke holders, and in the end removed the carbs. Sound reasonable? (the chain was a split chain btw)

It was because I felt I was fleeced by the labour cost, that I got so wound up because the job looked so sloppy. 3 hours labour and they didn't spend 5 mins checking the job :roll:
