View Full Version : More SV troubles..
Well the battery kept going flat, which I thought was down to the alarm, now I'm 99% sure it's either reg/rec or alterator thingies.. as it doesn't seem to be charging, I haven't TESTED it yet because I can't start it without bumping and the clutch is slipping, making it impossible to bump
Anyway, I've noticed something.
With the bike, can ride it for 1000000 miles and turn it off, press the e-start and nothing...
Stick it on an optimate for 1 night and it'll start on the button for a day... (well, i.e. once in morning, once when coming home from work blah blah)
So it seems to me the battery is fine, holding a charge no problems, but the charging system isn't working as if the battery is flat it doesn't charge up when riding.. whereas it charges FINE on an optimate.
Gotta get my multimeter out and try and start the ****er and test the charging system :?
Bike is so much fun though, will be a shame to see it go, one of my fave bikes that I've owend!! But I did say I was only buying it until I passed my car test, and my car test is looming.. so it's soon to go :(
Passed my theory on Tuesday 8)

I've got a reg/rec here which is probably good, if you want to give it a crack... The breaker forgot to take oit off the subframe when I bought it :) I'd need it back after but it might help you tell what's what...

Jump the bike off a car battery if you can. For testing the system see this:
www.bikeguru.fsnet.co.uk/alternator.html
Start with the resistance testing of the stator, make sure you have the r/r unplugged though.
Bike is fooked now.
The battery has leaked acid everywhere , most probably due to it being laid on it's side under the pillion seat. So I need to replace the ZXR shock with the standard one and get the battery back where it should be (gotta buy a new battery too  )
It's too hard to bump start and now impossible due to locked clutch and it won't start off a car!!! Thin more than just the battery is ****ed, like maybe the starter motor or something - not sure yet
Also the bike won't move.. i.e. put it in 1st, clutch in and it's locked solid. I think the clutch has seized and won't disengage so is too hard to push unless in neutral! Looks like I gotta take the clutch out and replace that too
Bikes stuck at work with no way of me getting it home!
Going to fix it, service it, wash it up and sell it.. goodbye SV.

It's often very hard to push an SV in gear with the clutch in unless it's been warmed up... Bump starting from cold, personally I'd say just forget it, unless you're a beefy guy or you have a good assistant- I find the rear slides before the wheel turns.
Also, it's a sealed battery, won't leak unless something's badly wrong with it... (generally from overcharging or dropping IIRC) Being on its side's not known to cause problems, my spare's been left every which way all winter and is fine.

Very hard to push as in IMPOSSIBLE.. I'm not exactly big/strong but I could not push the bike AT ALL , not even an inch.. with the bike in 1st gear with clutch in.. it's never been like this before...
Bump starting I find very hard on the SV.. the R6 would start easily.. I can start the SV down my road as it's very steep downhill but have no chance on the flat bits..
Their is a load of white flakey stuff by the battery, 99% sure its acid as that's what battery acid does, so I'm pretty sure this is the problem... apparantly this is the 2nd battery since the shock was fitted, and this one is only a few weeks old...

Hi mate
im sorry ur having more probs withthe sv,
the engineers report said the chaging system was fine,
personally i would put it down to changing the shock over and putting the battery back to standard position,
im 99% sure that will fix ur problems,
Im sorry i didnt have time to do this for you before i delivered it, but as u understand it was a matter of 12 hourse between finding my bike and locating a tralier, to get the sv to u.
the shock should take all of an hour to do, and the batery no more than 30 mins, if i can be of any more help let me know, she wasnt a lemon when i had her, i am genuinly shocked to hear all this,
Balddood sorted me about a battery ant an excellent price, so try him if u need a new one, and it sholdnt leak as its sealed.
I will do it all for u if u can get it here, and thats a genuine offer, cause it might be £30 fuel, but ill sort it all for you, ill even take the alarm off if we have time,
hth
Alex
I had two people pushing mine with no joy.
If battery is on its side it should be a GEL type. The standard SV650 battery is not.
I've just had exactly the same problem as you. After charging battery would hold charge for weeks but when drained with small current (ie electrics on but no lights would drain in 5-10 minutes.
New battery sorted that.

trouble is new battery is only 5 weeks old!!
its cause its layin on its side,
basically i had a simmillar problem but i put it down to the battery i had being shot, so i bought a new one when i sold it to yams,
i said if thte problems continued it would be the battery position, and sadly they have continued,
Yams, the offer is genuine!

The most helpful web page I have ever found for battery problems
I don't want to say too much as I'm looking to sell the bike.. but we think the engine is seized :x either that or the gearbox is ****ed.. going to take it apart at work tomorow and see if the engine turns over direct on the crank.. if it does then at least that rules out the engine, then going to have to get it breakdown recovered and get a mechanic friend round to strip the gearbox :x it's deffo not right that I can't push it with clutch in, all my bikes, NONE of them have been like that and the SV never used to do this until all my engine problems of late. First it was smoking bad and losing oil, now the bike won't budge at all in gear .... sounds like it's seized up to me!!! :x
Basically, the charging/battery problems are 1 issue that I'm pretty confident can be solved by sticking the standard shock in and a new battery - it's 100% leaked as I can see visible signs!! I'm not too worried about the starting system just yet.
The engine problem I believe to be the clutch, although others seem to say this isn't a possibility and that it's the gearbox/engine.. I don't know.. jsut going to rule out (or confirm) that it is/isn't the engine tomorow by turning it over.. next up I don't know..
Never know, it might be something simple  (I can only hope :? )

My battery has been on optimate all weekend yet still nothing, when I hit the e-start, nothing.. no clicking, no trying, no whiring, no buzzing.. it has lights and the neutral light shows, although the high beam light doesn't come on... but it won't start and it won't start from a car either!! That's what worries me!!! It should have started FIRST TIME when we jumped it from a van, but it done bugger all at all... might be a fuse lol

hi mate
if u take the cap of the sied of the engine the water pump is on and tun it over using a socket that should show u,
unless the temp light came on i cant see y it would be siezed?
Gear box was Faultless when i had it, and unles su been doing rolling burnouts or seriously abusing the clutch i cant see y either of them would be soo bad,
It is a bugger to push in first with the cluth in if the engine is cold as the oil is hevay weighted and drags on the cltch
ai reckon it simple

ahhhh it sounds like the bloody starter relay fuse,
behind the lhs seat pannel (as u sit on the bike) is the starter relay fuses, its a 30 amp, check that before anythign else, if u tried to jump it and crossed connections at all coudl be that, iv doen it before

Haven't done any burnouts or any clutch abuse at all really, haven't even wheelied it for 3 weeks or so!

I will try it in other gears see if it makes any diff., but it's never done this for me before. it's been ok to push even from cold.

Starting problems happened way before we tried jumping it. Jumping it was the last resort. I will check the fuses anyway.
