Is it ok to use 3 in 1 machine oil on a bone dry chain that my Mrs (30 miles away) forgot to oil this morning before she went out? :)

Pretty much any oil that is liquid enough to get into the chain properly will do it. You might find there's alot of fling though.
Yep! What CS said, but not vegetable oil

Would do it at a push, but I'd recommend cleaning it off and lubing properly afterwards.

No you can't, you don't have a topbox!
Hah, you all laugh at me for having a monstrosity on the back of my bike, but I laugh at you.
When I'm drunk.
On all the beer I just carried back from the shop, in case you didn't get the subtlety of my joke.
WD40 is recommended for cleaning off chains before using a proper chain oil. I use it every so often with a toothbrush. (for my chain, not my teeth).
So you shouldn't have any problems as its a penetrating oil, but it won't stay there long....

You don't need a topbox - I can fit a crate of beer in my Belstaff rucksack!

You don't need a top box I've used a cargo net to hopld 2 crates of beer on the back before. Wouldn't want to go too far with it like that though

I remember chuckling when I saw a bloke on one of those gargantuan scooters (you know the big, 650cc, 2 people things) trying to cram a crate of beer into the underseat storage on it.
I fitted my evenings drink in my tankbag. How? VODKA :D
