Check and extend your bike insurance if necessary, often called green card, make sure it is comprehensive

Make sure you have recovery/breakdown insurance, and scrutinise the small print - if you are imobilised for some reason & can't ride your bike, both you & it will need to be recovered

You should also take out personal insurance, but again check the small print - the cheapy online insurance often has a clause exempting you from riding a motorbike over 50cc :shock: - to stop muppets from hiring peds & trashing themselves.

My bike insurance covers me on the continent, but only tpft. Is it really that essential to upgrade to comprehensive for the trip, and is it likely to be expensive?

I think Mr Toad's citing risks that apply to bikers.

Your insurance probably won't:
- repatriate your bike if you have an accident
- repatriate you if you have an accident
- pay your medical bills if you have an accident
- provide you with a replacement bike/car if your bike breaks down
- cover theft of luggage

So some of it can come down to a decent travel insurance policy, and some of it comes down to a decent breakdown & recovery service, and some of it comes down to just your bike's policy (thefts etc).

it's not essential, but probably worth doing, shouldn't cost too much for a week or two

As above, get some kind of breakdown cover like AA 5 star, or the RAC equivilent. Its worth its wieght in gold. A mates car packed up in southern italy. Car got relayed home, he got a flight home etc, all within the cost. £112 if i remember. The car did take over a week to get back, but it got back.

The AA's and RAC's policies are the most comprehensive on the market. Check it out on thier websites.

And yes, Fully comp insurance on the continent, that way you do not have to deal with letters from threatening french people :?

Have a look at NCI, I've got complete breakdown cover with them that includes European travel I believe.

...and check it includes your leathers lid etc just in case you have an off.

And if you have an off and none else is involved make sure that's covered to. Some policies don't cover this type of accident and it'll be up to you to repatriate your bike.

just sorted this for my trip. travel insurance was £8 and european breakdown cover was £44. I guess it's one of those "I wish I had" or "I'm glad I did" situations. For just over £50 I think you'd be foolish not to atleast have euro breakdown cover...

If you're TPFT cover, I doubt that your insurers would upgrade you to comprehensive mid term, reason being if you then go and wrap the bike around a tree the next day they might see it as a bit of a coincidence. Worth a phone call though.

This thread could be a good sticky in the Euro section. For PERSONAL TRAVEL rather thna bike insurance I mean.
