I want it out of the way and my holder isn't the nicest looking thing.

You do have to display it don't you?

Well I tend to mount a nice blue/carbon hold on my can hanger.

anyone ever seen one of those cylinder tax disc holders?

It's meant to be on the left hand side of the bike and forwards of the negine. Given the large amounts of fairing on many modern bikes, this pretty much goes out of the window.

Mine is currently on my radiator, but I'll probably move it to where the pillion pegs join the frame.

yes
left hand side is considered the best place as Mr Plod can see it as you go past, otherwise you may get a tug  especially if they are operating one of those check points where a couple of them stand a hundred yards up the road & radio the details of those they want stopping to the check point further down the road

mine is next to the chain guard, but I have seen them plastered all over bikes, inside screens, bolted onto the bottom of the number plate  , etc

Most bike coppers are OK, they know that tax discs get nicked, especially around town, and that quite a lot of bikers carry them in their pocket. However out of town this is less common.

I put my new disc on on Saturday, washed the bike Sunday evening & now its almost illegible - anyone know where I stand on this - does it have to be readable :?:

Sorry to say this... I love the Dutch system. Pay straight to inland revenue and don't have a tax disc - they know when you're being naughty and just send you fines thorugh the post...

(Although not having a SORN system wuld suck if your bikes off the road for any period of time...)

just seen this thread and got me wondering, whats the law about carrying Tax Discs in your wallet or putting them under the seat , just so it doesnt get nicked ?

Have thought about it but thought against it, but would rather keep it in a safe dry place , so would like to know for when my renewal comes around

It's illegal not to have a valid tax disc on display.
Ian's way of making a colour copy and keeping the original hidden seems good, cos then you're less likely to get a pull for not displaying, but you won't lose your original.

Ian's idea seems good , suppose you could say on the copy 'original with rider' for what its worth

no, youll just get 6 months for fraud

this sounds a good idea actually but what if a traffic warden sees it when your not with the bike, can they not tell that its a photocopy and do you anway for failure to display a valid disk?

incidentally mines bolted to the hugger in a nice anodised blue holder complete with 6 little allen bolts to stop the disk being nicked, personally if i was that way out id just rip the entire holder off but hey ho...

i carry mine in my wallet. i have been stopped twice without it on display and both times the officer was ok that it was not on display.

out of interest, has anyone actaully had their tax disc stolen off the bike? that's why i keep mine in my wallet, because i am under the impression that they are liable to be stolen.

it's never happened to me and is this just an urban myth?

Yep
had mine stolen 3 days after getting the bike

the tea-leaf simply unscrewed the holder and made off with it

I know it didn't fall off as it was there when I parked. These days I always take a pic with the digital camera, so I can save myself the £15 cost of getting a duplicate

Gah! What sort of dumb chav would steal someone else's tax disc!? How thick are these people?? That would hurt though, having to pay £15 for a duplicate when it only got nicked in the first place cos of the law that forced you to have it in a nickable place all the time...

I'd say its worse if you have a 125 and pay 15 quid for a disc and then have to pay 15 quid for a dup.

if they had a bigger allen key they would have only had to undo the one bolt.

You could, I was going to on mine but the copy is so good I showed about 10 people it and they couldn't tell the difference very easily. The only giveaway is the shiny part is a bit duller on the copy.

Also if you put the tax disc on the rear hanger, could you not use one of those 'hanger' lock bolts to ensure its not stolen?

I keep it in my wallet. Been pulled once for my loud can - but they just wanted to have a look at the bike

Coppers said they don't have a problem as long as i carry the tax disc all the time with me.

I had to go to look at the bike to find out. It took me a while to find it, but it's on the front left fork, just in front of the brake caliper.

I redrilled the holder and mounted it under the near-side pillion footrest bracket - using the rear mounting screw and thus pointing towards the rear of the bike.

Its now tucked up under the seat moulding, out of the rain and sh12, is visible but secure. In fact, it looks quite cool (as you young things might say).

If I wasn't old and tecnophobic, I'd stick a nice pic of it on this posting.....but I am, Iam, and I can't. So you'll have to take my word on it![/img]

One of the guys at the the dealership I bought my bike from had his nicked off his bike a few days after putting it on as well, so he told me to keep mine off and so far I've not had problems either, and I've been past plenty of check points, officers etc. Even when I was given a good telling off in Soho for covering up my plate the copper didn't say anything about not having a tax disc displayed.

I've had mine nicked in the past and had to fork out the £15 for a duplicate. If it ever gets nicked again I won't bother to get another one. If I get pulled and questioned over it, I will say I hadn't noticed and that it must have been just stolen. At the end of the day it's recorded as having been purchased so there will always be proof that it is taxed.

Mine is mounted on the headlight bracket pointing backwards so that the disk holder covers the headlight bracket.

Checked with the DVLA they confirmed that even if the tax disc is not showing but they have you on there records you are covered, its just a case of convincing the police

You can a duplicate one for £7 I think - it invalidates the old one though.

What I don't understand is why you have to display one at all. They have been very big on advertising that they have all the details on computer now and that they know if your tax disc is out of date and will automatically fine you.

So..... Why have a tax disc. If they know that you have paid the money and have this on record surely they would save a bundle of cash by not issuing tax discs and simply sending out a receipt.

Or is that just too sensible

So..... Why have a tax disc.
Law hasn't caught up with technology. Once ANPR systems are as ubiquitous as safety (********) cameras, then the paper disc will almost certainly disappear.

Front left hand brake calliper thingy here (in Oxford holder).

Can't remember where I saw it but have a recollection of a biking jacket with a special transparent tax disc pocket on one arm...

You fellas have got to move to Spain! Basically you just carry on you the stamped document showing the annual fee has been paid. This is about €30 per year about 24 squid? The paperwork for buying a second hand bike though is a pain in the a*s and costs you about €320euros.Cant have it all I guess! 8)

Went to put on a new tax disc last night. Found that the tight buggers at the dealers had taken it off

Was there when I test rode the bike, and there when I went in to hand over the lucre, but they must have taken it off before they handed it over to me :( It didn't really register in my excitement, but spent ten minutes searching for it and it defo aint there.

Glad I didn't take up their offer to service the bike - wonder what else they would have nicked :(

Mine's in the standard place, just under the left hand rear peg. After raedign this thread i'm going to keep it under my seat in the holder (and remove the rear pegs, don't need them).

One thing jonboy pointed out to me, you can never get a parking ticket without a tax disc on display. What a shame.

That's terrible - I would have been very tempted to go and demand it back because it was there when test-rode and paid for.

Anyway, I have a couple of points in relation to this thread:

1) Captain Nemo said on an earlier post that a traffic warden might do you for not having a valid tax disc displayed. I didn't know a traffic warden could do you for this. Is this true? (I though it was only the cops (or DVLA))

2) Why would a low-life scum (thief) want to steal a tax disc anyway? It's not as if they can use it on their vehicle to avoid buying their own because 1) they'd get done for not buying their tax disc/declaring sorn, AND 2) as soon as PC plod sees the stolen disc on the thieves' vehicle, they'd get done for not having the correct one (and possible even get done for stealing it). So why do they steal them?

For the record for this thread (going back to the original post), my tax disc holders are as follows:
1) Suzuki GS500: In the usual place on the left-hand swing arm.
2) Honda ANF125 Innova: On the left-hand side of the bike on one of the arms that support the top-box. Moved it there from where it was previously on the swing arm because it was blocking the tyre pressure chart and I could never remember the tyre pressures and had to keep moving it to read the chart.

The Suzuki has got an Oxford blue one and the Honda has got an Oxford Black one. Have to say they are far better than the Motrax holders and they are genuinely 100% waterproof.
