View Full Version : Pillions who fall asleep

Seems like Hannah (my lovely GF) is prone to this. Was a bit of a shock when she just fell on me!

Hate to think what might have happened if she had fallen off (eek! :( ). Any tips to minimise the chances of her falling off?

I've not fallen asleep as a pillion since I was about 6, but talking to people who've had adults fall asleep on the back, it seems that they lean more naturally into corners and are generally better behaved.

I knew someone would answer that, yet plenty of people have told me its a common thing for pillions to do.

I think it was due to the fact that she was cold, but even if she was jacked up with pro plus after lots of sleep and a nice warm gear setup, she still might fall asleep which is why I am asking for tips!

Hate to think what might have happened if she had fallen off (eek! :( ).

A girl fell off the pillion seat of a bike on the A30 last week just north of Old Basing, we passed it just as the paramedics arrived so didn't get involved. She is critical in hospital still.

It is unclear why she fell off and is likely to be either that she had fallen asleep or that the suspension of the bike was not set correctly and she was bucked off, there is a compression point in the road and it will get a badly set up bike all out of sorts.

I once fell asleep while riding, after working 22 hours straight, hit a pavement and broke some bones. Sort of woke up in mid air screaming
" Shhhhhiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiitttttttttttttt!!!!!!!!!!! Owwww !!!!" into my helmet.

Had a drunken pillion pass out on the back once, kind of fell on me so I pulled over and he toppled off the back. Eejit!

A *friend* once fell off the pillion seat of her boyfriends bike... mind you, she was awake at the time though... he just pulled a monster wheelie from a standstill and dumped her on her @rse as he sped off.

Another *friend* would regularly take <insert various classes of illegal substances here> the night before riding to work, stay up all night then fall asleep on his bike while riding to work. As far as I know he's still doing it. He's a riding instructor - safe! Did a good job on my CBT though

Before going out for a ride with her discreetly insert a drawing pin into the end of one finger of your left glove.
Whenever she falls asleep give her a quick jab in the leg. Tell her it must have been a wasp or something ;)

i used to fall asleep sometimes on my old mans xs1100, but it was a bit safer cos it had a sissy bar on the back, so i couldnt come of the back. now on his bandit, when i used to go on the back, he constantly pulled wheelies and stoppies, it doesnt only keep me awake, but doesnt half give me a good work out trying not to hit him and fall off the back :)

I've kinda fallen asleep on the back of Joe's bike a couple of times. Its generally no biggy unless you do something very suddenly with acceleration. My mum always used to fall asleep on the back of my dads bike and it was never a problem and like has been said dad reckoned it made her a better pillion.

Oh and two up wheelies? Pah  But the thought of Hannah in control of ANY motorcycle frightens the hell out of me

I've fallen asleep - albeit a light sleep - riding pillion a few times on motorway journeys... One time I woke up as we were coming up to Dartford tunnel, focussed and realised I was watching the tarmac rushing past.

I think most people have a trigger mechanism so if you slip too far, you wake up. Although I guess it would've been really bad if something had happened and Stupot had had to take emergency avoidance action...

My ex flatmate done it a few times. for about 15 miles one day in the rain. was nothing major. was easier to ride with her out for the count that fidjiting around. my girlfriend does it all the time too. only bad bit is when they wake up they tend to jump. kinda unsetles the bike. especaily on corners

better late than never... i'm here now though eh!! lol

Right, yes yes I have fallen asleep as pillion - lots of times - for miles and miles!!

I have also ridden as pillion completely and utterly drunk - lots of times (and once with Lyn).

I have never created a problem on either count (not counting the hangovers the following days - which incidently were nasty and involved quality time with a bucket)..

One of my friends would NEVER take a drunk pillion but doens't have a problem with me at all - drunk/passed out/generally asleep etc... He just carries on...

The thing is, if someone riding a bike has the slightest inkling that a pillion is making the journey remotely unsafe, the rider would instantly pull over, dismount, demand the pillion dismounts and proceed at full volume at pillion until pillion apologises and gets back on OR... just leave annoying and stupid pillion at roadside...

Pillions who completely relax (like me) and have an instinct for bikes and rider and.. who hold on to rider and NOT that stooopid grab thingy on back generally won't cause a problem on moving bike - asleep/**** faced/passed out/sober/awake or playing scrabble/monopoly/etc!

lmfao...

waffle waffle...

In conclusion... pillions causing danger will be instantly picked up on by rider and then thrown off and made to walk! Pillions causing no problem at all should be left on back of bike for lovely long journeys.

If a pillion is relaxed enough (not bored) to fall asleep is a compliment on riders riding don't you think??

:D :D :D

Nuff said (probably ten minutes ago!!!)

As far as I understand the law, if a rider carries a pillion who has excessive amounts of alcohol in their blood, then the rider can be charged with a drink driving offence. So maybe best not to carry drunk pillions as your licence is at stake.

As far as I understand the law, if a rider exceeds the speed limit, this will incurr points on the licence and a fine.. If a rider exceeds 100mph he/she will incurr a fine and ban.. and you guys would never do that either would you !!!!!

Yes but they're considerably different. Taking a drunken pillion means that you are no longer left in control of the bike, as their actions have the potential to cause a serious accident. I'd also be letting someone else have control over my licence.

Would I take a serously enebriated pillion? No.

even after reading my posts? still not convinced? Seriously sloshed is another ball game really... If said pillion is incapable of walking and talking then, no, should not be taken...

Levels of alcohol have to be a contributing factor... Along with pillion's experience, rider's experience, pillion's natural instinct, pillion's chosen place of holding on, previous direct experience with specific rider, mutual trust and knowledge of each others actions, etc.

Every time I have been drunk and on bikes, rider has made informed decision based on above criteria . Again, I have never caused a problem.

Rider should not take completely smashed stranger as pillion on jaunt due to all above criteria not being satisfied in my humble opinion.

Back again!!

I do feel the need to state the following before we head back to sleeping pillions...

Should I leave an establishment COMPLETELY hammered and be in the situation where I am sitting on the floor crosslegged (trying with all my might to not fall off) and watching the rider start the only motorbike in my line of sight and I find myself deciding which bike to try and sit on once I have convinced and blackmailed my legs into a vertical(ish) position - THEN would most definately be the time for a taxi and I would not clamber onto the motorbike (which by that point would probably be the most common option of the one in the middle)!!!!!!!!!!!! lol... Nope, I would not go pillion in that situation..

Right, where were we.... sleeping pillions... next?

I think what jonboy is saying is, it doesn't really matter if you're a safe, drunk pilion - if you're involved in an accident and you're found to be drunk, then someones going to get in trouble.

SnoozyBoozy
05-05-05, 09:00 AM
I agree... if you chose to take a drunk pillion and you get caught you are in trouble. If you chose to not have insurance and you get caught, you are in trouble.. If you chose to exceed the speed limit and you get caught, you are in trouble. If you chose to blah blah blah and you get caught, you are in trouble... All about personal choice...

mumble mumble... lol

Lyn.. help!
