Motorcycle dangers
From Mr Paul Smith

Sir, I am becoming increasingly alarmed at the rising number of motorcycle deaths. These accidents, whether the fault of the motorcyclist or other road users or even road conditions, are tragedies for a great many people. The main problem seems to me to be the lack of protection a motorcyclist has.
I wonder whether we should start looking at restricting the use of motorcycles to, say, minor roads, or even banning them altogether?

Yours faithfully,
PAUL SMITH,
8 Beacon Hill Road, Halifax HX3 6AF.

I was considering writing him a nice email... But I suspect it might not be taken in the spirit in which it's intended :)

So is he just a twonk or does he actually want a large group of bikers to turn up at his house and beat some sense into him ?

Now writing a letter like that and putting down someone *else's* address would be good fun...

I still think it's someone's idea of a wind up.

Maybe we could pen a "ban cars" letter to The Times, explaining that they're the cause of most road accidents?

As an aside, the subtext of his letter is that of the general unhelpful attitude we encounter so often these days: reducing the frequency of accidents isn't important, making sure they happen at lower speeds is, even if it means more accidents.

I was so incensed (and loving the sound of my own key-board, so to speak) that I wizzed off the following last night:

As a motorcyclist, I am deeply touched by Mr Paul Smith's concern for my safety (letters 4 May). He suggests that banning motorcycles may assist in lowering death rates, which is of course true. However, the Government's own statistics (National Statistics Online) show the even more worrying trend that the country's highest death rate is for those aged 80 - 84 (not many motorcyclists there I feel) and it's increasing; no less than 101,500 died in 2003, up a staggering 6% on the year before, way ahead of inflation. Even more worrying, deaths amongst women account for 54% of this total.

Now the Government has stopped us from killing ourselves through putting a plug on the toaster, I suggest that death rates could be reduced by 55,000 per annum - at a stroke - simply by making women over the age of 80 illegal.

I put it under the heading of "Lies, damn lies, statistics and specious arguments" as you have to use the odd poncy word for The Times! I don't expect they'll publish but I did get a big pro-biking letter full-on in The Sunday Times last year.

I thought it was a well constructed argument against the use of motorcycles, thoroughly backed up with statistics. I shall hence forth consider selling my motorcycles, thank you kind sir.

No now hold on chappies and chapesses. There is no real reason at all that motorcycles should be in existence as their real world practicality is minimal. Add to this the danger they create to other road users and well what else need I say'''........

Nurse,nurse....my medication is wearing off please can I have my biker tablets please!

Someone heard you Ceri! There's an excellent letter in Timesonline today suggesting just that, plus another reminding people of the danger of diesel spills. Full marks to The Times for balancing the argument.
