Bugger... had to happen :(

Just got back from hospital

Had a phone call off the garage to say my part had arrived to fix the last load of damage not caused by me...

Going up and over the rhigos mountain (south wales bunch know this road)

Theres a rally on, so the sheep are a bit jumpy.. well, one got jumpy on the road infront of me :( grabbed the brakes...

feck... Im on my side going down the road..... tumble a few times. anything that sticks off the left side is now a tad worn. or broken

My kit is ruined... but it did its job.. I got away with a bruised knee grazed elbow, bruised finger, and one of my fingers was grazed to the bone :(

So Im sitting here.. typing slowly and painfully...

sad thing is Im TPFT.. So I gotta fork this one out myself....

not likely to make the annual ride out now :( by the time the estimate is done, and parts ordered.. its going to be a while.

It could have been worse, as I was taking my time cos I knew the sheep were about....

If I were going any faster, i would have hit the sheep.. and worse things would have followed.

Take care..

Blimey! Not a lot of fun eh? Sorry to hear you're feeling a bit rough but glad you're more or less okay. Bummer about the bike though, hope you get it (and yourself) sorted ASAP. ;)

Sorry to hear of your off, Gareth. Glad you are not seriously hurt.

These Welsh sheep are a real nuisance. One would really expect to
have fences along the road. When we went out on the rideout of 23
April I was thinking about these sheep all the time, especially when
we were riding through fog. I think now that riding in a large group
might actually be safer as there is more noise to frighten the sheep
away from the road.

Hope you get your bike sorted in the near future.

dont mean to sound american, but couldnt you claim off the farmer ?

valleyboy
21-05-05, 12:40 PM
not likely.. they just roam free around here.. as professor will tell you, they just roam around.. 1000 sheep road aint called that for nothing.. you dont tend to see them as much over the Rhigos, but as theres a rally on, they are all over the place.... why infront of me.. I hope it ends up on someones plate sooner rather than later....

Got more pain kicking in now.... first accident and all that.. sure it will hurt more tomorrow!

Cheers lads!

So sorry about this G - but glad you're in one piece (more or less). Don't want to be the harbinger of doom or anything, but it's going to hurt a lot more tomorrow :(

For the benefit of others, "The Golden Rules of Riding Through Sheep":

1. If they've got their heads down and are eating then all is well
2. If they're looking around expect them to go in any direction
3. If you come across one in the road and cannot stop, aim for its **** because they never move backwards.

Hope the bike's not as bad as you think. and there's still 2 weeks before the rideout - time enough to get it fixed.

At least you have enough excuses to sit down with your feet up, cheering Man Utd on the box this afternoon

if you see a sheep run across the road infront of you, be careful, as it will probably turn and run back.

reason, because it was safe where it came from.

learnt that at my IAM meeting a few weeks ago :)

I dont know.. but I didnt ask for its number either!

Im just gutted Ive got nowt to do all weekend now :(

Should get an estimate by tuesday, been told it could be up to a grand if I wanted everything repaired...

or a few hundred quid to get it roadworthy again.

Going to get the garage to repair it to road worthy, then get the rest of the bits through them, and do it at a later date, as labour is going to be the big thing in the costs...

I just want to get back on two wheels!

Aww, tits. Still, two arms, two legs, nine and a half fingers and ten toes, one head and one torso = all still connected = good! :D

Sounds like the best course to be honest, getting it roadworthy and then tackling the rest later on your own (though no doubt there will be help/offers here that may ease the pain on your pocket).

My favourite route up by my parents in North Wales (y'know, the really rocky bit  ) is along the A5 through the Ogwen Pass, up round the Conwy Valley and on to Llanberis and Harlech.
Problem is if it's not sheep making the roads an obstacle course it's caravans... and if it's not them it's winter so you have ice n snow to contend with.
Best ride I ever had round there was a 3am in the middle of summer with a full moon. Bright as day though everything was in shades of silver and black, best of all there was nothing on the roads but me. Even the sheep were asleep! 8)

Depends... A sheep was contributory to one of my offs, and it got spooked by the rider in front going by... He was past and safe by the time it launched its murder attempt :)

Having had a bad experience with local wild life myself recently I really do feel for you.

Good idea about just getting it road worthy. Are you not able to do the work yourself to save the labour costs :?:

I'm sure one of the Welsh contingent would be happy to ferry you to the rideout.

Sorry to hear you you came off. Good to hear you're alright but not so good about the bike.
We have similar problems with the horses and cattle on the New Forest. Although they are a tad larger than sheep they are just as stupid and make a mess when hit. All forest roads are covered by a blanket 40 limit but this still doesn't stop the carnage.

valleyboy
22-05-05, 10:53 AM
Im going to cough up for them to get it road worthy.. and do the rest myself....
so thats the footpeg and holder on the left side, gear lever, and little bits on the handlebar, barends, clutch lever, and for some unknown reason the front brake handle also broke... I noticed this after I helped back up and walked over to the bike.... firsth thing I thought was I dont remember it doing anything on the right hand side :?: no other damage on that side at all.. except the lever.. must have pulled it too hard! lol!
Bike stand is also a tad fooked, indicator.. etc....

Radiator covers been ground down.. thats not important though.. and the fairings been worn down a tad as well.. so just a general repaint for some bits'n bobs

Think I may be forking out for some R&G's once its back on the road!

Hopefully sooner rather than later!

Cheers!

p.s. going to take some pics of my kit.... knowing full well they did their job!

Don't forget to post a photo of your (left?) glove. In light of the
damage to your finger it would be good to understand what happens to
a glove in such circumstances.

valleyboy
22-05-05, 11:11 AM
Theres hardly much damage to the glove... its where the left handlebar was the first thing to contact the ground.. my hand was on it... the leather parts of the glove stood up well, its sadly the material on the top side went through straight away!

Hope you and the bike mend quickly, chin up mate

sorry to hear about your spill,

cant believe no ones made a comment about welshmen and sheep !!!

im welsh too and i find the best way not to startle a sheep is to approach carefully from the rear,

youll never get one chasing it on your bike.

Baldyman - Ive sent an e-mail to JHS racing.. and as I have a few days off, Im likely to phone them tomorrow as well!!! If they have loads of bits to sell cheaply, then I'll be back on the road sooner rather than later!

I shall be going over to see the bike on tuesday anyway, so i can pick what needs doing etc... so if I can supply some bits myself, it will make things a damn sight easier!

damned right.... funny thing, on the way back from the hospital... there was a bloke on a fireblade right behind us in jeans and a puffa jacket.... almost lifted up my jacket and pointed it out to him!

As for exact speed... somewhere between 40ish.. I was slowing down at the time, as there was a rally on.. when that feckin sheep jumped infront of me! If i were going 60.. i would have hit the sheep.. no doubt about that... and the sh!t would have hit the fan then!

I think you are lucky to escape serious injury and avoid writing off
the bike. Things would have been different had you hit an obstacle
(the sheep being one possibility).

Whoa. Just read this, glad your okay.

Why is fate so cruel, if you’d gone a cropper a fortnight ago it would have been on the courtesy bike!

Hope you’re able to get the bike running for the Annual Ride out.

If I can help in anyway just give me a shout, I’ll do what I can.

There was a case last year where a biker successfully sued a farmer as his livestock (think it was a sheep, but not sure) darted into the road and had him off. I think it was successful because there was a hole in a poorly maintained fence it got through. On 1000 sheep road though, I don't think it'd work. It is a bugger- it'd be a lovely road to absolutely hoon it on, but the wildlife ruins it (there's a similar one near me, you could do a ton along it, easily, so long as there weren't cows wandering into your path  )

Glad you're comparatively uninjured and hope the bike is sorted soon.

just got back from cornwall, see what you mean about the sheep just going everywhere,

we had a sheep in the road infront of us, he wasnt paying attention to our horns, so we had to go off road to get round him :)
