View Full Version : Clutch and throttle stiff to use - cable oilers???
My four year old SV650S has become noticeably stiffer on the clutch and throttle.
I've used a cable oiler (many years ago!). Has anyone had any luck using one on an SV. Should be the solution methinks?
Thanks in advanced

Hi there!
Sounds like a cable oiler might help (or maybe the cables have come to the end of their useful life?). I use one from Hein Gericke. It's the little one designes for use with aerosols. I find it easy and convenient. I use Prfi dry lube or silicone every two months and the cables are always nice and free.
Hope this is of some use,
Regards

Get y'self one of those ink refill packs for colour & black inkjet cartidges - use the syringe & blunt needle that you get in the pack, fill the syringe with oil & carefully squeeze the oil down the cable lining & watch til it starts to drip out of the other end, et voila - oiled cables ;)

Having just done that, I agree. Feels like a new clutch, wonderful. And from now on I'll be lubing my cables on a very regular basis.
.
Thanks everyone. Isn't sv650 just great!
Is it easy to put new cables on or should I go for just oiling?
Thanks again

Very easy, depends how ofay u are with the bike, took me 15 mins and that was longet than it should have done because i wasnt at home with my full tool kit,
Grab a haynes if ur not sure, or bend sum ones ear....iv forgotten how to do it exactly as i dont have the sv....
Will any oil do this job? Was thinking of using 3-in-1 or should I use something thicker?

Anything Extra Virgin will do fine ;). I've just oiled my clutch cable with 3 in 1 with added PTFE (oo-er!).

Don't use anything with solvents in- ie WD40- apparently it can attack the cable lining. I used the old "engine oil in a bag" trick- get a plastic bag, put in some engine oil, attach it very tightly to the end of the cable, and squeeze gently. You can also push and pull the cable slightly as well to help the process.
a lot of cables are nylon lined, and nylon absorbs oil (and moisture) to some extent.
I use Halfords aerosol "nylon&rubber lube", which I suspect is basically silicone oil, seems ideal.
£10 for a new clutch cable sounds a no-brainer to me.

have you had the airbox off and cleaned/lubed the carb end of things? It does tend to get a bit cruddy in there sometimes
