View Full Version : Back tire touching licence plate!
Ok, so I rode pillion on it after Joe brought it back to my house (logistical issue) and afterwards I noticed that a small part of the underside of the plate had been rubbed off!
Is this normal? I have an R&G plate holder. I would say that the bottom edge it's about 10cm away from the tire with the bike unloaded.
Oh yeah I have a K4. And remind me never to ride pillion again. I had serious respect for Hannah (gf) after that!
No its not normal. So you had you and Joe on an SV
Bend the bracket slightly so that it slopes out.

I suppose it might not if you don't adjust the back shock. I know it happened on Monkey's bike and he had a smaller plate as well. His basically snapped going over a bump.
So you had you and Joe on an SV
 Wish I could have seen that.

Yeah it was funny. Joe leaning the bike over further than I ever have, and me on the back whimpering like a little girl.
We both agreed that the front forks dive a bit too much though.

It must have been refreshing fro Joe to ride a bike with a full box of gears! :lol:oh yes, that bike really does bring out the hooligan in me  John that but at the bottom of your plate was there before if we are talking about the same thing, I noticed your numberplate backing wearing away., I would suggeat that it is probably from riding in the reain and the crap being thrown at your plate from your rear tyre, It is no biggy just put some tape over the back of the plate at the bottom.
ps I told you that being a pillion is no fun!
Ah ok, I hadn't noticed it before. I'll tape it up.
Back tire no longer touching the plate.
That is, until a get a new plate!
So the score is now SV 2, licence plate and scotoiler 0. I'll be contacting R&G as the hanger is clearly badly designed. Maybe they will pay for the plate, but I doubt I can make them pay for the chip in my hugger :(
At least for the time being I am GATSO immune!
Here's the email I sent to R&G,
Hello,
I bought one of your Suzuki SV650 Licence Plate hangers and fitted it according to the instructions. However, it seems that the angle of the licence plate is too vertical, resulting in the bottom of the licence plate being too close to the rear tire. After a week of riding, I noticed that the back of the hanger was being worn down by the back wheel when going over bumps. I resolved to take a look at maybe bending the hanger plate away from the tire to compensate, but last night I rode over a loose drainage cover (which result in a large bump) and the back wheel ripped the licence plate off completely. I therefore need a new licence plate (as it is completely broken in half) and I have chip in my painted hugger. I would therefore suggest that the angle of the hanger plate should not be 90 degrees to the mounting plate, as this places the licence plate too close to the back wheel.
I can supply photos via email if required. My bike is a 54 plate SV650. The suspension, preload, tire etc is totally factory stock. I am an average weight (80kg) and the bike was completely unloaded. I can also supply a witness statement from a police officer of the incident, as there he was travelling behind me and clearly saw the event.
Can you please respond if there have been any other similar incidents and whether you intend to compensate me for the licence plate and hugger. I can supply receipts for the purchase of these items if required.
Many thanks,
What happened?
It was actually quite funny. John goes over bump, plate goes crunch and gets flinged up into the air. All very funny stuff, if you're the one that's watching.
Well they just rang me, so much for reading emails in a timely fashion. They reckon the plate should have had plenty of clearance so have asked me for some pictures. I'll post them up here too. They sounded sympathetic though, so maybe I'll get the cost of plate from them.
