Sounds a good idea, Fizz
The Minehead road although nice is full of 40s, but I've no alternative. After Minehead a run up Porlock Hill then via the confusion that is Lynmouth and Lynton and then across the moor would be nice.

ooops yep I had forgotten that they had re-done most of that.
I also think that ride through past the Cerne Giant is in order as well
If you're in the Exeter area I might ride up and meet you for some of the route.
Although I am working some weekends in August. Just pick a date and route and I'll join in if I can.
Oh Good, I was talking to someone regarding such an event. I wasn't going to post anything until after AR05 (as Jonboy has termed it).
This is what I had in mind (http://www.cardiff.gov.uk/government/images/test_3_klm.pdf)
I'll be happy to tag along with any plans of yours Fizz, as I don't know the area that well :D .

That would certainly not be a bad ride, I dont know those roads to well.
I know Yeovil, Bridgwater, Dorchester, Bridport, Weymouth area much better
Let me go out on the bike and do a bit of research and I will try and work something out
Maybe we could do two seperate rideouts ??

Nice Mogs, although a run back through on the B3358 and then down on the A369 look nice too (although I can only vouvh for the B3358.
The only part of that route I'm familiar with is the A39 Minehead to Lynemouth which is a rather good stretch of tarmac.
I want to come. I like the 39 to lynmouth and porlock hill, sadly a bit far for me in a day!
the A 396 tiverton to minehead is a cracking road. So good i rode it 3 times :D
Could be up for this, I know a decent b&b for a yeovil overniter haha

One weekend in August I think
I need a bit of time to organise it and I am flat out with moving into our new head office at work at the moment so I dont have a lot of spare time.
Sounds great and my neck of the woods too :D Count me in for sure and keep me posted
Deffo up for that fizz. When you work out a route, let me know, and i'll find a campsite near :D
Sounds like a good day out to me, could be interested. Dad lives in Weymouth and I'm down for a visit sometime mid July.
Would love to ride some of those roads on something a little faster than my step-through moped of my youth

And as my bike 'should' be ready soon(ish).. well.. road worthy anyway!
I wouldnt mind doing some longer distance stuff.. well, anything out of here is classed as long distance! hehehe

I don't deserve credit for this one, it's Fizzwheels planning. I can plot a course, that's easy on autoroute. If Fizz needs help and I can accommodate I will. I want to go on this one, but August is School hols thus family time.

Update
Been out today, rode a route I think would be good
Started at Podimore Roundabout Little chef just out of Yeovil, Thought this might make a good start point as has lots of parking, somewhere for food and fuel.
Rode down A372 to langport and then onto Bridgwater Via westzoyland
Bridgwater to Minhead on A39, then on to lynton and up Porlock Hill and across Exmoor, Picked up A399 lovely road, and then onto A361 to Tiverton, Up the M5 to taunton Across A358 to Chard, down the A30 to Crewkerne, then Onto Bridport ( I forget the road number ) then Across the Coast road through Burton Bradstock and Abbotsbury and into Weymouth, Then to Dorchester and then A37 back to my house in Yeovil
Plus Points
A372 nice and twisy good road I know it well and love it
A39 after a while is lovely especially down in to Lynmouth
A339 is great to nice and twisty but easy to read the road
Crewkerne to Bridport and then everything after this is a great road I know it well and love it
Minus Points
A39 from bridgewater for a while is sh*te to much holiday traffic
A361 is fast, but dull
M5 I hate riding on motorways its boring
214 miles in total most of which done at my kind of speed which is very naughty in places, left home at 12:30 and didnt get home again till 17:30
Makes for along day, I stopped once for fuel and a cup of tea and some cake.
I think I am going try and work out away to skip the A361 / M5 bit and maybe cut it short
I need some pointers,
1. Does this sound like to far to do in a day, I will schedule in a lunch stop and some tea break stops to
2. How fast do you guys want to ride, I cant really judge as the SWS Wales trip was wet and everybody rides slower in the wet. When I say naughty speeds i mean up past the 80mph level. I am concscious that not everybody will want to or feel comfy riding at that kind of speed and I want to make sure everybody has a good day out and enjoys themselves, the countryside ( theres some fantastic views on this route ) and doesnt have to ride faster than they want to to get round and get home at a reasonable hour
Any feedback at this stage most welcomed
Cheers
Fizz

All sounds good to me, most of us won't be travelling to far to get there so distance shouldn't be to much of a problem. As long as we have a few breaks so i can eat sweets at regular intervals i don't mind. And as for naughty speeds, thats why we ride bikes surely.
fizzwheel
11-06-05, 07:51 PM
Yes thats true, but I dont want anybody to be forced into having to ride faster than they want to. Its different chosing to speed but having to is a different matter entirely.
I think I am going to name this rideout the Coast to Coast Rideout, as I have seen both the North Devon Coastline today and the South Dorset Coastline to
fizzwheel
11-06-05, 08:05 PM
Oh and if possible can one of the moderators make this a sticky if you feel its appropriate so I dont have to keep bumping it
thanks
250 mile  *Coughs*
Looks ok dude, i will have a look on me map when i get home. The 336 is a fantastic road :D
That's a fine route, but perhaps a bit ambitious, those of us that will travel over the Severn Bridge will have to add over 160 miles to your 214. I was suffering towards the end of the annual rideout.
Leaving from the Little Chef, is a great idea, (have you got their number, we can prebook Jabba's breakfast :-) ).
If you could keep the run itself in the range of one tank full (140 miles) with a set-off time of about 10:30 - 11am that will make it more feasable for non-campers like me. Maybe do either the loop north or south of the M5.
If the speed is about the same as the annual, okay. I won't hoon it round roads I don't know, but we can sort out for meeting points.
fizzwheel
13-06-05, 10:21 AM
Mogs OK I will look at cutting out the southern loop maybe we could keep that back for another rideout
What sort of speed was the annual rideout ???
Oh! I take it you didn't make the annual :(
Generally it was kept just within the speed limits, with the occasional quick part. The drop off system was adopted. Riders that wanted to go a bit faster would drop off and act as waymarkers, once the TEC reached them they would power their way past all the "peloton" to do it again.
fizzwheel
13-06-05, 10:44 AM
No I didnt make it, had a prior engagement that weekend

Been out again tonight, found a better way to get from the A361 to the A30
Follow B3181 to Culompton and then the A373 to Honiton the the A30 into Chard
WOW What a Road, really nice to ride, now I reckon that lops off a good 45 - 50 miles off the previous route I posted, so I think that if we then cut off the southern loop and save that for another ride then we have ourselves the making of an enjoyable day. Also I know a good route from Crewkerne backup to the little chef we are gonna be starting from that is twistie and fun.
Mogs - the is basically nicking some of your route that you posted on page 1 of this thread, hope you dont mind, but its works out better this way I think and means we can take a more leisurely pace which I think will probably make for a more enjoyable and hassle free rideout.
Also this cuts down the milleage for those travelling to the start point and then home again in one day.

that's a relief if I'm travelling up from Southampton. 200+ miles plus the ride to and from the meet would have pushed it to 350 miles.

Everybody is welcome and I have noted your comments about not riding fast. I would like to point out now that despite my natural urge to ride fast, this rideout will not be a race or a fast paced rideout.
I'd rather we took it nice and steady and enjoyed the day out and the views / countryside.
When I ride this tomorrow I am going to keep my speed down to the sort of pace people have described on the annual rideout.
Keep your eyes peeled for confirmation of the route and start and end points

UPDATE :
I've been out today, well with this lovely weather it would have been rude not to
This is the route I road today, basically same as before but shorter
Start at Little Chef off of Podimore Roundabout, where the A37 and A303 Join
Follow A372 to Langport and then A372 to Bridgwater, then
Follow A39 to Minehead, then on up over Porlock Hill, Down into Lynmouth, Follow A39 ( I think ) out of Lynmouth, then
Follow A399 towards, Barnstable, then
Follow A361 to Tiverton then
Follow B3181 to Cullompton then
Follow A373 to Honiton then
Follow A30 to Chard then
Follow A30 to Crewkerne then
Follow A356 towards Illminster / Illchester Meriot then
Pickup A303 and head towards orginal start point
Milleage as near as makes no difference 165
time taken 4 hrs including some stops for Drinks and chocolate, and to take a few pictures
Does that sound more like a sensible milleage, or shall I try and trim it off again, the only real down point is the A361 bit of the route, about 20 miles of Fast dual carriageway / single A road, mind you after all the twisties before that it is kind of nice to have a rest.
I found a few pubs that look likely lunch spots, We could stop at Riders in Bridgewater for a cup of tea and a look round the Ducati dealership. There is an ice cream van up on top of porlock hill. There a plenty of places to stop for fuel, but not many where you could stop for a cup of tea once off the A39, except for a little chefs.
The biggest plus point for this route, IMHO is that is nice and easy to follow with not many junctions of towns to break up the route, so sticking together or using the drop off sytem should be nice and simple.
Also the roads are relatively traffic free or they were today, and remember its holiday season now and its was hot today. The worst bit is the Bridgewater to Mindhead section of the A39. Otherwise pretty traffic free.
Now today I made an effort to keep my speed down to sensible levels. I.e sticking reasonably close to the speed limit. I left the start point at 2:30pm and was back there again at 6:40pm.
Thoughts / feedback please
Cheers
