No and again I see and hear people of IL4s backfiring, but on purpose, with a much louder bang. I have heard that this is done by using the engine kill switch.... any of you chaps do this? If so what is the exact procedure? :D

Rev it to 7-8k, flick the kill switch off and on quickly whilst maintaining an open throttle.

Cannot vouch for the engine if you keep doing this though.

Am I right in thinking that this only works on carbed bikes?

won't work on your bike as it has fuel injection AFAIK

Two things, firstly beware where you do this as it really can cause offence and is precisely the sort of thing that the police are looking for to issue out ASBOs. Secondly understand that you can cause valve damage by doing this, the reppair bill could be enormous and you'd invalidate any warranty if your bike is under two years old.

Technique? Open throttle and whilst keeping open flick the kill switch off for a second and then back on again. Unburnt fuel will have gone into the exhaust and is ignited once the engine is firing again.

TSM will tell you how to do it on the vtwin

but not really advisable to do, especially on a cold engine :?

I mainly here the noise coming from new R1 & R6's are these not FInjected?

Also do you do it on an open clutch?

Thought so, never tried it as it doesnt really float my boat as such, but my mate does it on his R6 :?

Not strictly true, it will work on an FI bike, it just needs a little more persuasion to do it.
Not that I've ever tried of course.

Also do you do it on an open clutch?

Pull the clutch in.

I thought you left the clutch out so the engine turned over and moved the fuel through... pulling it in would stop this process?

The engine will keep moving for a while after you flick the kill switch.

Yes Yes, ive been done on that issue before. (not to say i wont do it again elsewhere, i wont do it in soho(hopefully))

FI bikes can do it by bouncing off the rev limmiter or rolling on and off the throtle at certian rev ranges. On carbs its easy as already mentioned.

I know it will kill my bike one day, when that day comes i will cry (not), the diffrence will be i will probably kill the bike another way.

chill mate... ok? just pointing out that youve done it... :?

and I tell you something now, if your attitude above to your bike is the same as your attitude to riding it will become a self fulfilling prophecy. :?

I think backfiring bikes is funny... although I wouldn't want to do it to mine... my poor baby might break. :D

But then if you ride thinking youre going to total the bike from just riding round, then it will become a self fulfilling prophecy.

Bit like hazard perception, spot the hazard and then look away otherwise you'll go into it. If you think youre going to crash, and its in your mind then sooner or later you wont be concentrating enough and it will happen.

way to let go of the anger dude

just because TSM likes the lovely crunching noise of valve meets head, doesnt mean we can logically leap to a twitching casualty alone in a ditch. Thats a fantastical plotline only worthy of the Chinless wonder George Lucas.

Extend the logic a bit, does my purchase of R&G's mean I too and destined for the same fate? They are only for a single purpose surely, and not a pleasant one at that.

Not everything ends in pain and suffering

Actually, i'm going to side with Lyn on this one.

I was much like she describes on previous bikes, i used to walk around telling people how was GOING to crash and almost waiting for the day. Not quite sure what happened (maybe it was after spending 1k on mods) but now i'm far more careful and i plan not to drop her, it's a totally different mindset when riding.

really helpful guys.... not

and Halonic my comments were to do with TSMs attitude.

I was merely pointing out if you ride thinking youre going to crash, then more than likely you will.

My last off which was entirely my fault was down to sheer nerves and lack of confidence and thinking I was going to crash after 2 no faulters prior.

ive noticed im more comfortable leaning the bike over now since i got crash bungs fitted :)

i didnt think it was called back firing when you keep the revs high and move them up and down slowly ?

i get a small popping noise - but wouldnt say it was a full on back fire.

whats over run mean ?

in the context of someone describing their new end can ?

Back onto the original topic ;) Go riding along, about 5k or 6k, then let go of tyhe throttle so the engine starts its usual braking business. Flick the kill switch to off then back to on after a second or two (or five  ) Cue the bang and you'll carry on your way :)

I've never done it with the clutch in and have never done it with the throttle open either, just under engine braking, which I am led to believe is the easiest way to do it :)

Or you could join the 'REVZ' reading boy racers and buy a kit, which works on both FI and Carbs, which basically consists of a small spark plug put into a drilled hole in the end of yer exhaust and wired to a button (which also invokes the kill switch). This also then produces big FLAMES when using full throttle  Fast N Furious Style. Can be bought for both bikes and cars for about a hundred notes.

Dont think ill be sad enough to bother me thinks :D (maybe when i was 18 i would have  )

my mate has one - got nicked for it too.
he paid 10 quid for the kit.

my other mate has made one - cost about 2 quid in parts.

i wouldnt like to be using one if it all goes terribly wrong and blows me up.

the ingredients for a successful backfire are about 7000 revs a small boy walking down the road with his grandad and hit the kill switch :P i didnt pull the clutch in, i didnt do anything except hit the switch momentarily

The look on his face was amazing :D I know, I deserve an ASBO, its just I could see in that little lads face, he was going to grow up to be a hooligan too :D

It is not big and its not clever!

Well it is actually :P

I have destroyed a can doing this (a very long timeago).

The principle is pumping unburnt petrol through into the exaust system which then ignites when you turn the engine back on. When you start exploding petrol/air mixture in a space not designed for it, then problems can arise.

wheelnut
07-06-05, 09:16 AM
but when your grandad use to run a Morris Oxford or Austin Cambridge, he had to decoke it every 6000 miles :P

The SV is already fitted with an automatic decoke device :D

OK, I know.

Its probably a stupid thing to do, but so is riding a motorcycle at 120 mph

i suppose people who use kill switches to produce a bang wonder why bikers are often seen in a bad light by non biking people..does make you wonder!.

IMHO its a pretty chav thing to do..why?????????

If you have a carbed bike it can do alsorts of horrid things to your bike, even as far as setting your can alight and blowing the carbs off, to damaging valves and spiking the ignition..

TBH you will have more street cred if you learn to ride your bike quicker and better rather than acting a fool...

for me it gets put into the same catagory as those that have clio's with neon lights
