Hi all,

Technically, this isn't directly related to an SV650, but as I want to buy one once I've saved up enough money after my recent wedding, it does have very vague links...

I have a DT125 and the petrol cap is a bugger to get off. Basically there seems to be too much friction between the rubber washer/seal on the inside of the cap, and the top of the petrol tank.

Any suggestions as to what I can do? I don't ride a huge amount at the minute, but when I do, I stop at a petrol station and then struggle for 10 mins trying to get the cap off, made more difficult by the fact my hands are frozen (I do wear gloves but I think I've got crap circulation)!

thanks for any suggestions.

what no-one told me when my SV had stood unused for 2 months waiting for repair is what would happen when it was fixed and I was in the petrol station trying to get the fuel cap to open.

What had happened is it had rusted along the inside. So duly went into shop, got some wd40... generous amount in lock and in the edges and a few minutes later got the fuel cap open. WD40 will at least get squirted in to the area thats causing the problem and allow you to open it.

So give that a go and then remember when its open, if its rusted inside to clean it before shutting again or put vaseline in as 454697819 suggests

Washing up liquid would work too, but it'll look daft if you get stuck in some rain... Bubbles everywhere

Or you could hold a lighter near the overflow pipe and blow it open

No, on 2nd thoughts, don't do that, the petrol station manager would probably bar you for life

vasaline.....

NOT Vaseline, it will rot the rubber of the seal, and possibly allow fuel to leak, never use Vaseline or any other similar stuff on rubber, dependant on the specific type of rubber, you will be amazed how quickly it can rot.

Better to use some silicone grease applied regularly but sparingly to the seal, use some specific rubber grease, Castrol-Girling red rubber grease is the most commonly found brand, or a silicone grease supplied in dive shops for the assembly of scuba gear, or perhaps you know someone who has an Arai helmet, ask them if they have the little bottle of lubricant that is supplied with a new lid.
