View Full Version : Changing fork oil in cartridge forks?

Ok
With this new bike I have, it's been sat up for a few years and I reckon the front fork oil may well be past it's best, with a track day and trip to france coming up I was looking at sorting this out. Now I've changed the fork oil on my old bandit a couple of times and you just basically take the end caps off turn the forks upside down and 5 minutes later turn them right way up and refil.

Apparently on the ZX6R's Cartrige forks it's tricker, so, anyone done this and is it an ok job for a home mechanic or is it best left to the pros? :?

shouldn't this be in tuning and tweaking?

If it was an SV. :wink:in that case how about Idle Banter?

But it's an issue with a bike, therefore a biking issue.

From this I can conclude:
Lee's passing the buck, Joe's bored and feeling awkward and still doesn't actually understand the forum.... While carsick does

Ah, not necessarily so!

An issue with a bike, is not necessarily a biking issue!  This is proving to be a hot topic at the moment :)

I noticed all the specifically bike related threads getting moved.

Move this thread to where ever people feel is best. Ok How about the next post has something to do with the topic? :P

ZX6R's forks are similiar to the Showas used on Gixxers, and they need special tools to rebuild- I'm pretty handy but I wouldn't touch it myself.

No special tools are needed to change the oil, but when the fork caps are refitted you must ensure that they are set correctly on the damper tube/pushrod, if you don't do this right then the damping settings will vary from leg to leg. It's not difficult but it needs to be right, make sure that you set the oil level correctly rather than putting a given volume of oil in, the level varies from model to model of the ZX6, but it's always set with the leg fully compressed and the damper tube pushed fully in.
The Haynes for the ZX6 gives all the info you need.

Precisely.

And as it isn't an SV it can't go in "SV Talk, Tuning & Tweaking", it's not "Idle Banter" so unfortunately (in line with the recent change to BI) it has to go here. Not ideal but there you go.
