not sure if this has been mentioned here before.

Apologies if it has, but in case anyone with a bike (or 2) off road, in baskets etc., hasn't seen the adverts, the DVLA in their wisdom have decided that the old style V5 registration document will no longer be valid from 1st July.

You need to send the old V5 with a "covering letter" (why no form?) to the DVLA requesting a new V5C. You can request the old V5 to be returned if you want (to keep records for classic vehicles etc).

see
http://www.dvla.gov.uk/newrules/hrc_new.htm

I thought the covering letter was only if you wanted the old V5 back, if you wanted to keep the history of the bike :?:

Otherwise it's just a case of sending in your V5 and a V5C is returned.

Quote from the DVLA -

"An extensive TV campaign will be broadcast between 12 – 28 June 2005 to encourage all vehicle keepers who have not received the new Registration Certificate to send their old-style V5 Registration Document to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BA, with a covering letter.

This includes keepers whose vehicles are off road being renovated, or exempt from car tax for another reason. Keepers of old or classic vehicles who are concerned that they might lose information on their car's history may request the return of the old style V5 in the covering letter."

I read that as requiring a covering letter regardless. :-k

I will be hunting out the V5 to my TZR this weekend. Will put a covering note in asking for its return and to justify why I have to send them my details. You see they sent me the new one for my SV and for my CBR but haven't sent it for the TZR, yes its been SORNed for 4 years but the CBR's been for a year as well!

I thought that they had a big computer with all the names and address' on, like the one in the car tax adverts, so why can't they use that to send me the new doc?

I forgot, they only use that computer to fine people
