I think i decifered that right, were you referring to Brands Hatch? Doesnt really appeal that much.

I reckon i'll be alright just as long as the surface is smooth, I wasnt planning on caining it around there. (Though i have been practicing on PS2)

Whats the lowdown on turning up & riding?

dunno about tuning & stuff i turned up on the back of a pan euro & was given a fully race ready r1 got on it went around a couple of times then hammered it around once i got the lines & positoning right(i say hammared but i was going slow compared to othered  ) . it was fun but as i said it is dodgy at points  one fella broke his leg when he came of & hit the barrier

the ps2 will not prepare you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A mate and I are planning on backpacking through Europe in December to March. We are planning to get to the ring for some laps in a hire car  Bit cold for bikes in those months I hear, plus were not bringing leathers and helmets.

The Nurburgring website has info on opening times and costs

http://www.nuerburgring.de

Its 15 euro per lap, or 60 euro for 5 laps.

I've been practising on PS2 as well

No but I want to.

I think you just turn up buy a ticket for a few Euros and then queue up and off you go.

Just watch out for Ring Specialists / Nutters...

I'm not bothered about riding it quickly its just something I've always wanted to do

I'd also like to ride as much of the old Spa Circuit to the bits that use the public roads

Not ridden it but i've been there.

We spent 2 days riding there through france, belgium and germany.. got to the ring and there was a 24 hour touring car race on so we couldnt ride round it, but it was an experience none the less!

YOU ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO RIDE THE A258 FROM Schlieden to "the ring", its the most amazing road ive seen. Read my post entiteled "TOURING EUROPE - PICTURES" for my adventure notes...

Have fun.. wish i was out there again. :(

Not ridden it, but I have driven it in a Porsche 928 - only did one lap tho as it was my mates car and I was grateful enough that he had let me have a go! Nothing will prepare you for how steep the climbs and drops are, the steepness of the carousel is also jaw dropping (I drove round the outside of it! ) and the blind crests just keep on coming! Also, about half way round you will start to wonder if it will ever end!!

Well worth it IMHO and one I will taking the bike to soon as I have a friend who lives in Koln :D

Been round it too. Went on a coach trip in '83 to see two F1 GP's & the driver took the coach round it  :D Took 21 minutes.
Don't know if they still let anything round it, but they did back then.

They do indeed as I overtook a coach on my lap! I think its called the "Ring Bus" and is proper tour bus for the circuit...

in my recent trip to the ring they still let anyroad legal car or van on to it, i was two people in a 1.1 fiesta just next time i go i'm going to learn the ring using the ps2 and take my leathers

just watch out for the fast cars and bikes, there are some seriouly rapid people on the ring

out of intrests did anyone time themselves round it, using the sv clock so no seconds i reckon that i did a 10 minute lap from bridge to bridge (apparenlty this is the conformed method of timing - correct me if i'm wrong)

its also reputed to have up to 50 deaths a year but this seems very high as it not open all the time i think it would work out at more than 2 per weekend

the 258 is an incredible road and you absoultley must ride it just take care, there was a crash involving some english guys who had to be takern away in an airr ambulance, the hair pins are not alpine tight but more twisty than much i have seem in the uk

One of the few must do things in my life

Just the fact alone its 8 miles long, try memorising that even with Gran Turismo

I tell myself I wouldnt go mad but Jeremy Clarkson did a 10 minute lap on Top Gear,so Id have to beat that podgy bike hating woofter at least :riding:

...and the rest! The GP circuit was just over 14 miles, before they built the current Tilkedrome abomination, and I think the current loop is a gnat's under 13.

Spoken like a true "yet to go to the 'Ring" person! You have to average something like 100mph to get round in 10 minutes, I challenge you to hit 100mph on anything but the longest straights!

sorry but

the ring is 20.8km long for simpicitly i'll make it 20km long around the distance you time anyway as you never cross the start finish line

if you do 20km in 10 minutes your doing 120kph around 70mph

there also are corners on the ring that are takern at 100+ on a sv, if you were a really good rider i think that most of the lap would be almost flat out, on the last straight you get very close to 130mph
a guy in a bmw on a 8:30 lap was going through some corners at over 240kph (150mph)

if you can watch the vidoe on bmw website (sorry forgotton the address its not the bmw main site) of a k1200s doing a sub 8 minute true lap

If GT4 is anything to go off  theres plenty of places I could hit 100,you havent seen me ride

Yep I stand corrected aej,13 miles it is 8) oh baby!!

Taken from the website with regards lap times

My advice here can be summarised in one word: don't. In my view, it puts pressure on people to push harder than may be wise, especially if they have a particular 'goal' in mind. Both marshalls and police report that a disproportionate number of serious crashes have a running stop-watch on the dash or handlebars

BUMP :D

Ok this would be for next summer probably but im already thinking of booking a trip to the ring. Its not too early is it? Im just keen! :riding:

Theres tips on www.nurburgring.org.uk on things like insurance and where to stay and ive looked at some ferry crossings. I could sail from Hull I think so no long ride down south. Is there anything else I should consider and when should I be booking things??

Ok ill calm down now :D

I think the lap record for the Ring on a bike is about the 7 minute 49 second mark.

Re: Top Gear - what was even better was a couple of weeks ago when they took a bog-standard Transit van round the track (celebrating the Transit's anniversary).

When German bird did it she scared the cr*p out of the presenter (the little guy) and was overtaking loads of bikes!
