Hello All,
I've been threatening to come and meet you all - and as its Billy C's birthday I thought I'd come out this Wednesday if thats okay with you lot.
I'll bring the boyfriend along, and I'll make him bring the TL so at least he's on a twin. That is..... unless it really chucks it down, in which case we'll be in the Ford Kak.
And Viney won't be there, so he can't make fun of me :)
We'll be coming from Caterham. What time do you lot usually pitch up?

if so, when and would texaco garage on city road be ok as a meeting point as I need to refuel before I go anywhere? :D
Woohoo!
See you tonight lyn 8)

Hi Lyn, assuming I can get out of work on time, I'll trundle down with you if that's okay?
City Road is fine for me... would 6:30pm be any good for you?

sorry but if the bikes not 100% I dont think you should ride it ESPECIALLY if the forks arent working properly.
Thats the reason for my 3 offs on the SV this year - all down to the forks - and they werent bent just the insides damaged.
Im worried that if you need to use the brake hard it will do what mine did. Please please test it first before you ride it and have someone observe what the forks do if you put the brake on even a little. Mine bounced violently and locked the front wheel really quickly. I really really dont want you going for a slide if something happens. :? :(
sorry if Im worrying unduly but seriously I know what damage dodgy forks can do.

Something's not quite straight, but it handles fine.
Something's not quite straight, but it handles fine.
so did mine until I used the front brake. it was keeping the brake on when something pulled out in front of me or when I was about to go in the back of a van that caused my problems. otherwise the bike was ok.
Ive learnt the hard way a bike can appear ok a lot of the time but still is an accident waiting to happen if its not 100%.
thats why Ive suggested Sam rides it slowly and puts the brake on and has someone watch what the forks do. If theyre not right they may lock the wheel if the brake needs to be applied a bit. Its ok on a light bit of braking but if someone pulls out Im worried that the bike will do what mine did ie lock and go over.

ok. and like I said mine handled fine until it needed the front brake to do its job. but if youre sure I'll shut up then. :?

Well in your case the fork internals were damaged, which isn't what's wrong here. The bike didn't handle funny at all, even under heavy braking - all was well. Well, appart from the good ole SV diving front :D

Well i'm not riding the bike hard just taking it easy as i've been off for 3 weeks. I wont be breaking too hard until i get the bike sorted anyway. Thanks for the concern though Lyn.
who are you getting to straighten the forks out?
Ive got a mobile bike garage comming to my office to sort mine out next week. Mine are fine, just i do notice the handling is a bit off, but at least it brakes and goes fine afterwards. I just want it fully sorted out before i go on holiday.

I'm going to Steve Jordan's to get them sorted, they are just a bit twisted but nothing too major.

no worries, just dont want you to go through whats happened to me and get hurt... just learnt the hard way how important having forks that work properly are  :)

Hey Sam, are you going to get them to change the fork oil too? Made a big difference to mine.

Yeah i'll probably do the fork oil and the springs, but might try and do them myself (with Jambo's help of course).
When they straighten the forks they have to remove all the oil and the sanchons and fork seals. At the time they might as well put new oil, one job.
This is not BASAT compliant.

Forks are not bent, just twisted so the handle bars are not straight, its jsut a case of losening of the yokes and twisting them round until they are straight or something like that (someone correct me if i'm wrong). no need to touch the fork oil.

Twisted and bent forks are different things. If they're just twisted a fork/oil change wont be essential.
//edit: what sam said :oops:

woops, your right, i read it as they were bent. (surprised that your forks survived the flip)
I thought mine were just twisted in the yokes but when i took them off to change the springs i put a steel rule up againt the tube and found that it was a bit off.
What the fork is everyone on about?!
Happy Birthday old :plod:y
See you all in a bit. (Here's hoping they have functioning radiators in Kent)

Id suggest changing the oil at some point and most people do it when theyre doing something on the forks.
no doubt Ill be corrected for a non BASAT post but Im under the impression that the oil degrades over time [explains a lot with mine too]. Ive heard its best to do it every couple of years. My oil was unchanged from new - 5 years and it wasnt in very good condition. :? :(
Cazza, we still on for 6.30 City Road? :D
Well since it's billy's birthday it's time for my annual pilgrimage to selkent.
Hope to see you there in a bit
well that was a fun trip home. not.
last time I rode through fog that thick it was christmas. its july. what is going on with the weather? :? :(
hope everyone else got home ok. and nice to be back and nice to see you all again.
glad you seemed to be having a good birthday Billy. just remember - do not use the explosives experiment set outdoors in London
God - yes. That weather was really ****e. I've not ridden in fog, at night, with no streetlights, with a visor that needs clearing every 10 seconds from the misty rain / spray before.
First time for everything though.
Good to see everyone - Billy Boy - enjoy the rest of your time off.
See you all in a couple of weeks.
