Hi guys just want some advice really. I have never owned or rided a bike (been pillion a couple of times) but have always wanted to and finally decided that I will do it this year. Am looking to do my direct access for my 31st this October and then get myself a bike from there. For reasons that have been alluded to in another post I want an SV650S (if possible a very specific one) but am I aiming my sites too high for a first bike.. will it be too powerful etc?
Any thoughts?

There are a lot of people on here that have bought SVs as their first bikes and they get on with them fine. Just remember the throttle works both ways, relax and enjoy yourself :D Good luck!

For a large proportion of people on this site, the SV was/is their first big bike and I think I can safely say that noone regreted getting one

Thanks, makes me feel better about the idea. It means a lot to me to get an SV650S. Sorry guys but you may have to put up with some nugget posts for a while.

I was worried about this too at first, but since I've got the SV (which is my first bike) I've found it pretty user-friendly.
To be fair I've no room for comparison having never ridden say, a sport 600 before.
I've seen this question before on here and the same reply seems to keep coming up - try before you buy. If it turns out you don't feel comfortable on the SV, you can always get something smaller for a while and move up when you feel a bit more confident.
Not sure if this is strictly BASAT compliant given my amount of riding experience, but I figure it's just common sense...

Hi there,
I went from a 125 to a K5 SV650s. She is my first big bike and I love her, she has been very forgiving and has been so faithful to me so far.
Great choice of bike and good luck for your Direct access!

The jump from the 500 you will do you Direct Access on to the SV650 isn't that big. I weant from a SR125 to a (restricted) GPz500s and I had no problems and the SV is a much better bike than the GPz so I wouldn't worry.

Good luck finding that SV :D
After a few lessons on a bigger bike for your DAS you'll be fine and ready to think about getting your SV. Just take it easy at first, there are plenty of people on here that will go out on rideouts with you to help get some experience and confidence.
Again, good luck with it all!

Sorry guys but you may have to put up with some nugget posts for a while.
:D
Dont worry about that, most of us post nugget posts anyway :P
Welcome to the best site for nuggets
i'd never ridden a bike before until about this time last year. took my CBT, 3 days later started my DAS and 4 days after that i passed.
my first bike was/is my SVS, its an absolute belter of a bike. sure, i know no different, but for a first bike i'm going to struggle to see how anybody could do better in terms of all roundedness!! i just did my first track day on it, and the bike can hold its own in some good company 8)
as amandam said, the throttle works both ways!

Ive only been riding a few months myself.
Id never ridden a bike in my life till i did my DAS. Had 2 days training on a gs500, passed my test, and jumped on my SV. Just take it easy at first and you'll be fine.
Although the sv is a big powerful first bike its also light for its size, handles well and is very forgiving. All in all its great for a first bike IMO.

Sv as a first bike.....why not!? Just take your time, build your confidence at the same speed as your experience and ability and you should be OK.
Ive ridden all-sorts from fizzies to GSXR1100's for 20 years and believe me, the SV is a really lovely, competent and useable machine. It is, without doubt, the best all-round machine I've ever owned!
Have fun.

if thats what you want get it
i passed my test 4 years ago and brought a sv a week later and had it for 2 years and loved every minite of it thats why i have a k5 now :D even prefered it to the CBR 6
just remember take your time when you first have it and try and do a couple of thousand miles on your own before you go out with your mates
