View Full Version : Hatred Of Volvo Cars By Bikers

Do bikers still hate Volvos, or did all that finish years ago. The Ogri cartoon used to feature planet Ovlov [backwards for volvo] and all the editorials in biking mags used to go on about ow Ovlov drivers were cut off from reality and always ploughing into Bikes.
When I used to drive a company car up and down the motorways, I used to see loads of them broke down in the summer with stream coming out of their bonnets, I just thought that all of those lights were too much of a strain for them in the heat.
Is this hatred still there? or was it all a figment of my imagination?
I find Volvo drivers to be quite courteous and well behaved, far more so than the majority of BMWs, Mercs or Audis.
I was toying with idea of getting one myself.
I suspect Viney may have something to say on this issue!
I really don't care.. the main people I have a problem with is the one up my ****.. be that a volvo, Audi, BMW, ford.. or anything else.. Sometimes it other bikers... normally so **** who can't ride a sports bike to save his life but knows how to twist a throtle in a straight line.
...far more so than the majority of.... Mercs.

I don't think that Volvo drivers are deliberately being ****s, unlike BMW's etc. The problem is that many of them are asleep at the wheel and completely oblivious of what's going on around them.

Yes, volvos seem to be less aggressive, but also less aware than beemer drivers. A combination of old age and a sense of safety from their tank-like cars.
4x4s are a halfway house between the two.

i reckon at least 60% of car drivers don't pay a blind bit of attention most of the time, they are too wrapped in there own little world  .
get them to take a bike test i say

Sorry Audi drivers aren't that bad
Seriously, I stick by that, I'm not saying all, but a lot of big krautmobiles are driven aggressivly and with little regard for other road users although IMO about 80% of all car drivers shouldn't have a license as they don't seem to have clue what they are doing (some bikers too).
I'm sure there are a few courteous, patient, well driven German exec's around, probably yourself included Cronos

Being a Volvo V40 driver myself... I find them very reliable and sturdy cages.
Now a volvo with a caravan on the back is a differant kettle of fish...(thank god dad sold the caravan and his Volvo 850) Esp if it's a dithery old sod driving it on a Sunday down the A684 to Hawes, when he should be on the A66 going home....

It's the driver/rider not the car...
Yeah, I've had some problems with certain types of cars (as a car driver and biker) but it's more down to the driver feeling more secure and paying even less attention to the road, plus often having a big and reasonably powerful car makes some people think they're king of the road and then the combination of feeling safe and thinking they've got some sort of right of way outside of the highway code gets dangerous, especially to bikers... won't go into the list of cars though... we all know the ones.
This is yet another argument that cannot be won, trying to generalise an entire group or motorists cannot be done. Ask any non biker and get there opionion of bikers and im pretty sure some will say they are w**kers that cut them up and are a menace on the road. So trying to generalise Volvo drivers is just the same as them generalising bike riders.
I do agree there are alot of people in executive type cars that are a menace but the same could be said for little grandad in his micra. One reversed into my mate without looking in his mirrors once, luckily he had an escort so wasnt hurt.
Though women doing the school run in 4x4's and doing shopping thats a group which can be generalised perhaps

Volvo.
Made by Machines
Driven by the dummy.
thats how i remember them..... But, i can't fault Volvos as cars now, they go on and on and provid respectable power and performance for the size of the car. Loosing 5bhp after 250,000 miles in a T5 gets thumbs from me...
tbh, the Volvo trend seems to have gone for me, but still be weary of them old barge drivers!!!!

I drove Volvo's from when I was 19 until a few years ago (when I abandoned cars altogether - couldn't afford to run one !!)
When I turned up for my DAS the instructor asked me if I was sure I was at the right place !!
I have to say that I always considered myself to be considerate to bikes - would move over to allow filtering etc, etc.
Also, now I find that BMW, Mercedes & 4 x 4 drivers are generally the most inconsiderate / arrogant on the roads.

Thanks for your interesting thoughts people. I have noticed that volvos have been less annoying over the recent years too and the cars seem to be quite decent and less like a housebrick with a wheel at each corner.
I have a dislike these days for Vauxhall vectra drivers. Most of the badly driven taxis seem to be these, they shoot out in junctions by 4 feet before they look to see if anyone is coming, and go through red lights before they have changed to green, or creep forward instead of waiting at lights.
Also a dispropotionate amount of vectra drivers seem to be stupid **** heads when you meet them face to face.
anybody else?

Yes it can....
Merc drivers think their cars are 2ft wider than they actually are
BMW drivers think they have the right to any bit of road you may want to use. (Most of them think their car is faster than your bike....)
Van drivers are ********s
Drivers of cars pulling caravans are to be avoided at all costs
Not that I would tar everybody with the same brush of course....

Somebody's crusin' for a brusin'.....
Says me, with a Vectra SRi (chipped, of course). And to match it, I really am in sales, so the "Sales Rep Inside" tag really does apply  And of course, I go out of my way to be as awkward to bikers as I can..... :D
.
Well I've just got rid of a Vectra and bought a Merc.... I guess all sorts of people don't like me! :(

You missed:
1. Drivers wearing hats - old, doddery and arthritic. Don't use their mirrors coz they can't turn their necks far enough
2. Short-arsed "steering-wheel chewers" - can't see you coz the can't see over the dash-board
3. Anyone with a "Baby on Board" sign - only pay attention to one life-form
4. Chavs - too many reasons to list
5. Bus drivers - they operate on a different set of highway code rules to the rest of us; theirs is signal/manouvre similataneously, look (optional).
6. Ford Sierra drivers who think it's compusory to have their rear-light cluster wired up wrong
Sorry- I've had a bad day

I like you

My Dad always told me too look out for drivers wearing hats
We also forgot "women in small cars" - They only drive small cars because they aren't confident....

Not chauvenistic, just factual. My wifes a good driver, but she doesn't drive a car that will fit into a shoe box.... Men generally have a problem driving cars that small.... Something to do with phallic symbols so my Mrs tells me

Hmm, despite your desperately trying to 'out' yourself, no-one really seems to have noticed  Maybe you should try a more GYKD in-yer-face-type approach than trying to slip it in here.
Whoa  , more innuendo than you can throw a stick at there
I hated my old BMW and couldn't wait to get rid of it cos I used to get blokes trying to race me all the time. In the MG, people seem to think I'm a hairdresser so can be caught off guard by my biker's killer instinct.
I used to own a Volvo estate, and I have had a volvo estate pull out in front of me which ended up in me having steel holding my shoulder together.
I think the people that used to drive Volvo's in the old days have now moved on to Rover 400's and Daewoo cars. The Volvo has evolved and attracts a different type of driver.
If I was to choose a group to generalise about it would be 4x4 drivers.
Every ride-out I get at least 1 pull out on me. They look right at you and pull out anyway
They (wrongly) think that because they have a big car they are safe, yet crash tests show they are far from the safest cars on the road.
If I was to choose a group to generalise about it would be 4x4 drivers.
=D>
I forgot them

I've noticed that most of the bikers I've told about my last off, caused by a SMIDSYing estate driver, respond "Bloody volvo drivers." Now, I'm not sure what sort of car it actually was, but it definately wasn't a Volvo- just that everyone assumes a badly driven estate will be one.

Oi, leave my Volvo out of this :P
It was very cheap, actually it was free, It has 50.000 miles on the clock and was registered in 1995 :P
And I just insured it again for £160
Driving a V40 and comutting a long distance each day (when using the bike) I have to say that Volvo drivers in Holland are some of the best...
German cars (be it Merc, Audi, VW, Porche - who always try to race me at the lights :) ) are the worsrt by far. Followed by anyone in a car smaller than an escort - they seem to leave bkes less room than artics!
