Visor question

Took the visor off my new helmet a couple of days ago to clean it. I did what I do with the visor from my old/other lid, i.e. take it off and immerse it in warm (not hot) soapy water and left it for a few minutes.

I think that was a bad move because I found that a thin layer of something or other started to peel off the inside. I was as if the water had penetrated a coating of some sort; it looked a little like cling-film.

I have a couple of questions:

1. What is (was :roll: ) the coating? Is it something I should have removed anyway or have I fooked some kind of anti-fog enhancement.

2. I tried to reseal the coating but it didn't "take" properly and the inside feels a little rough where the coating came away. Vison seems to be a touch impared but this is very minor. Should I resoak it, try to get the coating off and use the visor as a spare?
I've ordered a new visor from http://racevisors.co.uk/ (clear, road legal with anti-fog coating) for £29........ I think this was an expensive mistake :oops:

I think it is (was) the anti fog coating, probably fooked! May as well get it all off to avoid it looking crap, and use it as a spare

could either be

1 - anti fog coating

or

2 - a protective seal.


wear it for a while and see what happens.

if the anti-fog coating or whatever it is, is that weak, it weren't gonna last long anyway. Best scrape it all off and hope the replacement is a little more sturdy.

they recommend just washing with soapy water, not immersing in it.. :D

Got a new Shoei xr1000 and i thought i would clean the pinlock visor with some fairy liquid and warm water. Dried really streaky and looked real mucked up. Had nothing to lose so used more fairy liquid to massage the "rough" and streaky insert and after washing it off let it dry naturally.
The anti fog coating still does the job so i was lucky!

try using kfc wetwipes and napkins to clean your visor . . . best fog protection ive found yet.

This is not a direct answer to query on ruined visor but if you ever want to do a salvage job on an expensive visor, or fairing blade which may hv scratches or crazing two recommended products are household Brasso polish or a product we sometimes use on aircraft windscreens known as Micromesh - p/n KR70 & you should be able to buy from a branch of Aviall the big US a/c parts distributor who will hv a branch somewhere in UK. The KR70 kit cotains some polishing cream & a variety of extremely finely graded polishing clothes. As always when attacking something synthetic with something chemical you will always do a test on an inconspicuous spot first - eh!
