The pictures of the oil filter in the service manual has a bolt running thru the middle. My filter has no bolt running thru it is just screwed onto the engine is that normal for a 01?

Yes ;). The whole filter screws on to the engine block - very easy to change.

Champion K301 from Halfords (£5.99) is what I always use and is a perfect Suzuki alternative - can't speak for the rest.

Does the filter have an oil filter removal tool on it in the picture?
Some oil filter tools use a bolt head.
Could be your looking at the tool and not the filter?

Some manufacturers still use paper element filters in more dusty conditions. they do the same job as canister filters but can be more tricky to get a good seal as the filter bowl has a bolt as mentioned, 2 seals and a spring as well as the element. A canister is just easier to replace, and doesnt need any tools
