So, I've gone off and tried some on... The Sidis- Way Tepor and Black Rain Evo- both fit brilliantly, very comfy, but the Ways don't seem very solid, and I suspect I can do better than the Black Rains at the price... So, who's tried any of these:

Oxtar Stealth- leather and goretex, very solid, a wee bit above my price limit but if they're as good as they seem, maybe worth it?

Tried a couple of pairs of Alpinestars ones, the GPS3 Waterproof (I think) were horrible to walk in, didn't like those at all, but they had another pair, the Roams, which I really liked. They didn't have my size, but these are much cheaper than anything but the Way Tepors, and seem excellent.

my gps3 were like that but they do break in a tad after a while and are great at keeping the rain out.

Hi Northy!

Being an old fart, I couldn't get on with the modern race boots so eventually went for some Altberg Clubman classics. Took two days to break in, now feel like slippers, they are warm and in a recent two hour ride in heavy rain let in not one drop of water!

Not fashionable and with less protection on offer than the modern stuff but I like 'em! £114 if you tell 'em you work for the emergency services. They also offer a refubishment service. When I talked to them, they told me they can literally rebuild your boots time and again, so accident damage and time of ownership shouldn't present a problem.

A mate of mine is a traffic cop. He's had a pair for ten years and says he's covered in the region of 250,000 miles in his with no problems.

Good luck with your hunt! :D

I've got some FT Pro Vent Aqua's
They're really comfatable, warn and they don't leak.
Quite reasonably priced and fairly stylish (not full on race boot, but then again they don't look like wellies)

I have a set of Daytona Voyager GTX's and I've ridden though snow and rain... the temp got down to about -5 though they got a bit cold my toes never dropped off after a hour of riding. Never had wet feet the whole time I've worn them even though they have been worn for over 10,000 miles. They are great boots and have a lifetime guarantee, but if it gets very chilly then I will wear some thick thermal socks.
But they where about 150 quid.. though you might be able to get them cheaper, but thats what you pay for with a lifetime guarantee.

I've got a pair of Hein Gericke boots and am well impressed with them. They are totally waterproof and look pretty cool. Think they cost about £120 but can't remember off the top of my head.

If you're after completely waterproof boots for winter wear, perhaps you could try Aquaboots? They're just like wellies, but look like leather boots.

Since I kept on asking here what winter boot to buy, I thoiught it was only fair to tell you all that I ignored every word and bought a pair of Sidi Vertebra II Tepors. Got them from Germany, they came to about £130 after postage. UK RRP is around £220 I think.

First impressions are very good, they've been totally waterproof so far and are as comfy and flexible as the standard Vertebra IIs. Not as warm as you might want from a winter boot though. I'm unsure of the material, I do suspect they'll prove less watertight over time than a goretex boot- but I reckon they'll be considerably better as day to day boots than any of the others I tried, for the riding I do.

Toe sliders are a bonus too, I've seen the damage that a slide can do to a leather or goretex boot without toe protection, and I don't want to spend £150 on a boot that can be torn up that easily. My other Vertebra IIs have taken an absolute beating but are still as effective as they were on day one- any boot with less hard armour would almost certainly have holed. I'm sure they'd protect as well, but the Vertebras didn't just protect, they also survived themselves.

The tepors are made of the same stuff as the Black Rains but are far better protected- for almost the same price. Can't argue with that. They're not really the same deal as Daytonas or heavy winter boots, I doubt they'll be half as good for real long distance stuff, but for the riding I do I think they fit the bill.
