I have quite a large dent in my tank ... wondering what the best option would be to remove it. I was thinking I may have a crack at this one myself, seeing as im likely to end up needing a new tank as it'll be cheaper than getting it done professionally so may as well have a crack it it myself.

What tools are best for the job and are there any guides around for doing this. Also I've seen comments about the tank being dual layered. So what should I do ?

Your easyiest option is get a tank cover.. oh and paint over the rusty bits, nail poslish works rather well...

You call that a dent ? More like a crater to me :) .

Seriously it looks like lots of filling out to be done. Like Grinch said you couls hide the dent with a tank cover. What colour is the tank?(looks silver to me).

Nb for Grinch: Sorry Mate , I'll sort the stuff for you I should have done about a week ago  today .

Cheers
Ben

Listen carefully I will only say this once.

Remove tank and blank off fuel outlet.
Fill tank with frozen peas.
Pour boiling water over peas.
Close fuel cap and allow to expand.

I jest not this works. 8)

Is it worth trying a few psi to see if it will pop out?

Cool...
I would do the duke first but its only a little dent and it hasn't creased or brocken the paint so it would be abit of a bugger if it went wrong as its perfectly useable.

I would never have thought of using peas, would it not only work with dried peas rather than frozen? Guess not. Rice could be an alternative as that expands hugely wiith added water....

Never tried above but just a thought, I would be amazed if this works but also very impressed! I'll stay tuned.

I think he meant undo the fuel tap assemply and put a metal plate accross to make it water / Pea tight.

usually by this time someone will have suggested compressed air. And someone else will have pointed out that compressed air and petrol vapours make a rather effective bomb. So I just thought I'd mention that :)

how about bicarb and vinegar? or would that be dangerous too?

In which case please ignore my suggestion. Never having to have to undent a tank I assume it is ok if tank is well flushed before?. Also what about tacking a stud to the dent and pulling it out. again flushing before welding, ensuring that tank is not sealed etc.

Find a friendly garage or repair shop. Normally they should have a balloon & compressed air affair. See if they can push most of the dent out.

Never tried it myself, as the only time I needed it the tank was completely creased, so had to be replaced anyway.

If there are any creases in the tanks then the metal will be weakened along the crease (bend it once to put the dent in, and a second time to take the dent out.)

Take advice from the garage if they think it will still be OK to use.

if you do it sprocket.. could you video it or something as I'd love to see a videoclip of a load of peas exploding out of a fuel tank

Funny seeing this thread resurrected ... :D I had my dent pulled in the end one place qouted me £200 to pull it without respray, managed to get it done for £50 by a friend of a friend in the end and it looks lovely :D.

Also just bought a dented tank on ebay that im gonna use for track days, only cost £25 including postage so might try the pea trick on this one :D:D:D I'll keep you all posted
