For the last day or so iv been having to bump start my bike about half of the times i try to start it, the other times it sounds like the motor is dying a death.

When i try to start it, i can hear the solenoid click (so i think its not the battery), but thats all i get, a stupid click, the motor doesnt even engage.

I got it open, and as was said a spoonful of oil came out (which caused even more problems cuz it looks like water got into it) and the gears seem fine.

My dad thinks its the brushes on the motor itself, and they could be knackered, if it is this, then any ideas what i can do?

Iv no warranty as its a K1 bike, and i dont fancy shelling out 160 knicker for a new one.

Any help appreciated guys.

I might be going beyond my core competencies now...in fact I should probably shut up. However, given that I seem to have set the starter motor hare running, I should say that this doesn't immediately sound like a starter motor problem per se. It sounds more like a battery or earthing problem.

Elsewhere, Richie-and-some-numbers (and others) gave some real good advice on having voltage drop tests done on batteries. They can seem like they're good until you load 'em up (as a starter motor does) - then they're not. And you can get a similar symptom if the earth connections aren't good.

As far as I remember when I was dismantling my lump, the sv650 starter motor in't easily reworked - it looked pretty much a sealed unit - but I could be wrong. However, the deal is: check the obvious first because that's what it usually is. After that, move on to the less obvious (and inevitably more expensive).
