It started a Week ago.

I was riding at 40mph - suddenly the petrol light came on - Speedo & rpm meter died for about 5 seconds. Then worked fine again.

Since that it mailfunctions more frequently. Yesterday it didn't work at all.

Indicators, lights all work - it's just the speedo & rpm meter that seems to have a fault.

I already checked all the cables/connectors under the front fairing - no problems there.

Any ideas what might be wrong ?

I've had similar sort of thing rearing its head occasionaly. Does the engine die momentarialy also?

trace the wires back and they should come into a plug unplug and check for any oxidised connections (green wires) as they snap very easily and can cause blips in electrial systems when the bike is jerked or you hit a pot hole

I had a similar thing happen just before the bike ate its regulator. So I would check the charging system and battery just to be on the safe side

check charging system, not only cold, but after completely warmed up for a half hour or so,

I think i found the problem.

There was something wrong with the main fuse. It wasn't blown but the element looked "worn" on one side. So I changed it with the spare one and it seems to work now - well at least while the bike is standing. I will take it for a test run later.

Oh and by the way - be careful with pliers - me being a clumsy XXXX I electricuted myself  :P
