What's the feeling on this? It looks daft, and also looks like it might be more dangerous than helpful... got me thinking back to the "leg protectors" they wanted on bikes all those years ago.

could only happen in the land of the free

It could work on the Goldwing. Don't think it would work on much else though.

Looks like a big @ss in your face

Whats to stop you still falling off the bike once its gone off, most injuries on bikes arent caused by riders hitting their heads on the bars and clocks :?

Whats next,seatbelts?

Stops you from going over the bonnet of the car that just pulled out in front of you and flying headfirst into a lamp post.

But that's not often, is it? (or maybe it is in the US?) most of the time coming off a bike involves coming off at the sides... I'd also be worried about it going off and knocking me off the bike. It's fine in a car where the force of the bag can't push you back, but on a bike you'd at least need a backrest or pillion there to save you getting thrown back.

Then again, if you have a collision with something solid whilst on a goldwing, would *anything* save you?

Exactly what I thought. Get launched backwards by the force of it! Lucky pillions behind you could cushion your fall

If youre on a Goldwing,i feel sorry for whatever youre hitting  but no,I dont see an airbag being much of a help in a big smash

Lol when i first saw that i thought it was someone mooning. That would be well fun, you can now add a bit of height to get maximum distance when hurled from your machine

Uhh? Airbags never push you backwards. They inflate before you get to them, stoping you from carring on forwards.

 it was a joke!

Id be interested to see how an airbag works on a bike,as in a car youre sat in one position but on a bike you move around in the seat

Couldnt put them on sports bike either,if it went off when youre crouched behind the screen

Not so, one of the most common forms of accident is hitting a vehicle in your path, ie the **** gabbing on the phone that pulls out in front of you, an airbag may never save you from coming off, but if it slows you down before you come away from the machine job done. Clearly it would only ever suit certain shapes/sizes of bikes, but it could well work.

The thing that concerns me is the risk compensation factor, as cars have got 'safer' (yeah...right) that is: compulsory seat belts/airbags/ABS/etc etc, drivers have got even more careless than they were before, I don't want to see that happen to riders too.

Ok it looks silly but i think its a good idea. It would of helped me in my off. I hit a car side on and was thrown over the top of the bike into the car.

ok. you hit a big bump to fast/clip a car/bird flys into you. just as your about to save it. THUMP a giant **** sends you flyin' off the bike! i don't think so. my flat mate rear ended a car went right over it, not a scratch. if that had slowed him down me might have hit the car instead.

I personaly don' think it's an airbag per say. i think honda realised how heavy the goldwing was and decided that, rather than shave weight off. they would add hellium filled balloon

A common misconception. In the very early days of airbags there were occasions where they went off spontaneously and at unnecessary times, (although far far fewer than is sometimes thought), but the control mechanisms are much improved nowadays and this problem really isn't a concern.

Still not sure it is a positive move though, but not for technical reasons, that's really not an issue.

In a car an airbag works well because you're already restrained with a fixed seat behind you and a seatbelt on.
On a bike you'd have to be sitting dead centre on the seat, travelling in a straight line and also be upright, with the crash sensors setting off the airbag at exactly the right amount to decelerate you (and a pillion if there is one). There are a lot more factors to take into account than a car... and in a car you can't fall off after the airbag activates.
Still, if it saves one life it'll be a good thing (so long as it doesn't claim any others)

Goldwings have always had airbags :D

You found them sitting on the seat riding

I thought they were windbags?

I believe that one cause of KSI on bikes is the biker hitting something hard, sliding forwards and shattering their pelvis on the handlebars. This airbag may help to stop some of that.

Something people always forget about, car and now bikes is that your mobile phone can set a air bag off. My brother used to make air bags, and one of the guys there lost a finger cus he was texting while working on a airbag test. So don't wave your mobile to close to the wheel it might strike back, but I don't see this as a bad thing as its your own fault. Imagine.. you see BMW drive texting while driving, 'Poof' airbag and phone in face. Just keep clear...
