Hey, im andy and have just joined.

im a been a member of bikechatforums.com for a while and have a RS125 however i passed my test recently (first time) and have the RS125 up for sale and seriously looking at SV650s (old shape) as i love how they look and the insurance group there in!

ive done a fair bit of reading up about them (mainly the difference in power delivery of the V-twin comared to IL4) and think there good bikes

Just wanted to post and say hi and any tips about buying and what you think of them really.

I think you'll find most people on here are in agreement that the SV is a great bike - but then we're biased

I bought mine as my first bike and have no regrets. It's very easy to live with and there are so many things you can do to personalise it a bit.

PS get a black pointy, they're the fastest ones, y' see...

Hey Andy. You know what I think of them.

Don't try an IL4 600 first, that's all I can say.

Can't beat the sound though, especially with the remus cans. That's their biggest appeal to me.

Prefer the curvy ones myself. I suppose with any suzuki, look for corrosion! Anywhere!

no got to be a curvy one im afraid! when i say seriously considering i mean as soon as i sell the RS ill be looking at them, not other bike for me (unless the insurance on a GSXR600 was much lower)

look lovely and really fallen for them lately

LOL it was worth a try. Seriously though I don't think you'll be disappointed whichever model you go for.

Insurance lower on a GSXR600? Not in this universe...

yea yea i know, dont think i was thinking it was!!lol

yea instigator you seem pritty positive on them! i also do a 50mile round trip 4-5 times a week and think the SVs will do a much better job than the RS is at the moment as it doesnt do commuting although its it main use!lol, i also quite like how the riding position isnt really race focused but still not bolt upright.

yea will check for corrosion!

There a good first big bike to me, passed my test over 6 months ago and riding my Red K5 pointy since (truthfully the fastest  ).

There very forgiving if you hit a long bend slightly to fast/wrong gear she will still steer you through, gone through dreadful rainstorms and still going strong. (I do the M1 to and from London during week days!)

This will be my first winter with her, so where see how she fairs since she lives out the back of the house.

You won't regret the SV, I don't regret buying her.

Cheers

Rich

As a first big bike they are the best there is, not to much power to scare you but enough to have a lot of fun with, they handle great as well. Easily good enough trackdays. I've seen one of the minitwin cup bikes beating 1000's in the fast group on trackdays.

And v-twins have got to be the way to go, my brother had a fazer (old style) and although it had a lot more up top, i found myself forever changing gear.

Have a word with Saint Matt (my lad) as he moved up from an RS125 to a curvy SV650S in July. I have one too. His is restricted and, although the acceleration is more restrained, the top end isn't far shy of the my unrestricted one. Even restricted you'll certainly feel one heck of a dfference at lower revs.

His RS 125 was very unrealiable and I had to retrieve him twice in a matter of months. After the second time (bottom end seizure) it was time to call it a day and that's when he went in for his test and switched to the SV.

The SV also does a lot more to the gallon and, of course, don't burn oil. Surprisingly the insurance he got was no more expensive than the RS - something to do with the stealability factor of the RS I think.

All in all you can't really do better - providing you choose wisely. At this time of year there'll be some real bargains around. The 'for sale' posts on the forum are a good starting point.

Cheers Keith

I traded in a Fazer (thundercat model) for my SV650 - I think it was a good move (the new R6 engine Fazer stinks and one nearly killed me when I took it for a teast drive)

yea my RS is costing a lot on fuel and oil (have to use castrol tts which is £10.50 a litre and it drinks the stuff!) i just hope i sell my RS quickly as i need to move on, the market isnt great for bike at the moment as where coming into winter so i hope that this doesnt effect the sale.

Probably going to be spending aroung the £2000 for one. been looking around ebay and biketrader and seem to be some nice ones around this price (although ill probably end up borrowing money as i always go over my budget!!)

Yea Saint Matt is on BCF (he was the one that did 2 up pillion KD) but havnt spoken to him yet, sound like a good idea.

Whats the difference in MPG from my RS to a SV? i knew it was an imporvment but is it a massive one?

Couldn't agree more....

I wish I had gotten the SV for my first bike instead of the GPZ500s I went with.

Hey Andy...great bike, great to ride and to look at and just enough power to put a smile on your face.

However...and I'll get thrown off for this..mine has been a bit unreliable in the two years I've owned her (since new). Been back to dealers 3 times for a dodgy gearlever...bike died on me two/three months ago on a rideout - had to be rescued by AA man. Turned out to be a melted terminal in the ignition barrel. Suzuki replaced all lockset under warranty. Next was the failed tail-lights and now further to my post she won't start.

Sorry guys....love the bike but hate the unreliability. My old Kwakker never let me down once in five years.....

..........sounds like a Friday Special you got there mate.

If the trouble keeps up, ask them to replace it - not fit for purpose. Only had one prob with my K5 - the FI light came on and the throttle jammed open to about 3k after some hard pushing. Dealers had a QUICK play with it, diagnosed a slack throttle cable, caned it on a test ride and BINGO- it's fine since.

Best of luck.

Garry
