View Full Version : Woman cautioned for breast feeding in public....
Dont know if any of you saw this - it made national news...
http://women.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,17909-1882710,00.html
Quite mad as it happened in the sleepy Norfolk town where I live! Personally it sounds like it has all been blown out of proportion, and if you saw the amount of interferring old biddies in Watton then its not surprising that one of them complained! Personally I think that there is nothing wrong with - providing it is done with some discretion.
Anyway - its a chance for my first poll ever! So discuss - is it right or wrong??

Let's face it - no matter how much us blokes would like to think otherwise - girls have boobs in order to feed babies.
Therefore to breastfeed in public should not be a matter for giggles or reproach but just seen as perfectly natural.
Breast-feeding in public is fine IMO providing it's discreet and with respect to others.
Personally I think the police officer made a bit of a t*t of himself.

I fail to see a circumstance where there is a genuine reason why a woman should not be allowed to feel comfortable breast feeding in public.
Since when could breasts be considered to be unacceptable in public, anyway?

I used to have a female colleague who once decided to demonstrate
that she could squirt her breast milk from one end of the room to
the other (thankfully, this was during a party and not during a
lecture). As much as I admire the female form I refused to watch
and ran out of the room. But Mrs Professor was forced to observe.
This incident scarred me for life and I am forced to vote "NO".

I also believe that the authorities have boobed in this particular situation. the lady in question is correct in feeling upset at being busted!
I agree perfectly natural but not too much to ask for a little discretion surely? 8)

Personally I think the sight of that would make me  I voted no.
first i've heard of this, then again i've not kept abreast of current affairs.
i'm for the discrete option. dont have a problem with it.

Yeah I saw it.
My cousin has just had a new born and has some kind of gause she can feed through if she gets caught out and the little'un is really bawling for feeding and she has nothing else available.
Don't see anything wrong with it myself I mean its not like she's flashing herself about and its perfectly natural but then some people aren't nearly as open minded as that =/
Personally I think if someone has a problem with it fine, say something or better yet just move on and don't sit there gawping =/
To involve the police is a bit ott imho.
I would be uncomfortable being in the same room during such activity, but as long as it's discreet then ok.
What annoys me are women who say "I have the right, it's perfectly natural", and will do so as publically as possible because of it.
It's perfectly natural to fart, yet it's socially unacceptable, especially in lifts.
I voted Yes, but would have voted Yes - decreetly had it been a selection.

Sorry about that, should have put a bit more thought into it...
Will amend....
Edit - guess I wont amend as I cant find a way to! Admin could you add a "Yes -discreet" option please! :help:

I don't actually like seeing it, but I've voted yes. Anyone who has a problem with it (including me) have issues they need to deal with.
We need to accept EVERYTHING involved with being a woman. Not just the bits that we'd prefer to. I mean, where would the human race be without mothers?

Think us Brits need to relax a bit, there shouldn't be any problem with breast feeding in public and I'm sure this wouldn't even have been an issue in another European country.
Agreed that the mother needs to be a little discrete when feeding, but surely a park is a more discrete place to breast feed than the middle of a restaurant? :?

Jase...If you think the Brits need to chill out...the reaction she would have got in little town U.S.A. would probably have been way worse. Ignore what Hollywood projects(pun! ) America is extremely square on so many basic issues. :?

Well said. I don't see anything wrong with it. I think that pigs are well out of order giving her a warning and that she should raise a complaint with who ever you complain to about the police.
Bloody jobs worth coppers.

Let's be fair to the copper, even the woman involved says that he was very polite. She hasn't made a formal complaint about him/her, either.
You're all getting up in arms, but she wasn't cautioned, or apparently even warned, she was just asked if maybe she could be more discrete.
I'm personally of the view that it's not an issue for breasts to be out in public. Maybe I just like looking at breasts, but then, a child clamped on tends to ruin that particular pleasure.
Everybody should just chill out. As far as I know, women going topless isn't illegal in this country, so the worst that usually happens is old biddies complain and an embarassed cop asking politely if somebody would be more discrete.
If one day a cop takes it too far, then a formal complaint should and probably will be made.

Good post Mike - hit the nail spot on the head in there...
Of course not!!! Everybody knows that breasts are there to be looked at and should not be used for anything else*. :x
* Other than things that cannot be mentioned on a U rated site!
I don't see a problem with it...
but I will say..

Yes and particularly as regards a "U" rating.

Didnt know there was a law against breastfeeding in public?? And the copper shouldve stood up for the mum and told them so. IMO this is perfectly acceptable and normal - he was out of line to make the mum feel bad about it. Tis a shame she feels she cant do it in public again because of the incident.
I say if a woman has the nerve to do it & can put up with the kids (say under 30, pointing & sniggering) & the old blokes ( say over 30, letching) then good for her & go for it.
I don't think it was the fault of the policeman anyway, he was merely carrying out his duty in investigating a complaint.
It's interesting that the plod must have been there quite quickly, obviously more important than burglary or gbh etc. plus how come female plod weren't sent ?

Its very interesting seeing as Watton Police Station was made "unmanned" over 5 years ago! The nearest Police Station is in Dereham which is a good 20 minutes away....

No problem to me.
My better half was breast feeding the little terror until she was 8 months old. It was always done discreetly and the first time was quite nerve racking for both of us as we didnt know what the reaction would be.
A babies gotta eat you know and it is considered to be far superior to formula milk. How can that be wrong? I'm sure everyone would want the best for their baby.
Expressing may be an option but some women find it uncomfortable, even painful. Then the baby may not accept a bottle.

I think it's fine if done discreetly because of the "haha, boobies" attitudes of some people. Wahey!

A key thing and a much better argument than the "just because it's natural" one. Mothers are generally told to breast feed for the health of their child by the state, so why should they be made to do something that isn't in the child's interests? I also agree that a bench is far better than in the middle of a restaurant or pub and that the latter places are more distracting and less discrete.
Fair play to the copper, he was polite about it, but unless it's illegal (I'm not aware that it is) he should have kept his nose out. I doubt if I'd asked a copper to complain to an old biddy that her garish blue rinse offended me and could she please cover it up when on the street that he'd of "passed on my concerns" to her.
Prof: That sounds horrible, the female equivalent of a lads' "how high up the wall can you ****?" competition. :?

Not to mention that a pub which allows smoking would be an entirely unsuitable place to take a baby.

I've voted yes to this and agree with it being perefectly natural, a babies gotta eat when it wants to eat, breast milk is the best for a bby and everyone knowws that
saw a woman breast feeding her baby trhe other day, did a bit of a douyble take and carriedon my way and thought nothing at ball about it
as for doing it in a pub oh come on! instead of the odd member of public having a gawp you'vve got got a pub full of people some more than likely out of their heads etc that would be so much better wouldn't it!

Whats the problem anyway?
It's not like they are flashing it openly!
I mean, first of all, it's covered by a human head! It's not like the have the babie a meter away and try to hit the mouth with a squirt!
And im quite sure they don't do it because they want to make anyone upset, it's more concern for their childs well being.
How can you feed a babie in a provocative way? (unless you are a complete idiot i suppose).
Sorry for all the bad spelling (gaah)

I don't see a problem with the mother's actions & I think that the cops should have told the old biddy to sod off, given that they have much better things to do with their time.
However, how difficult is it to cary a bottle of ready-mix with you when you go out, in case of emergency (i.e. screaming)?
Whilst I can see that "breat is best", how much damage do you do with just one bottle?
One for the girls, given that it's November, with fog and frost (and snow forecast), how comfortable would you feel undoing your coat & top outdoors?

Think the trouble there is that you can't always get it warmed just anywhere, the beauty of breast feeding is that the thermostat is always set to an ideal temperature.

You'd be amazed how much babies can chug through when they are hungry.
My cousin had 3 bottles on her and the baby got through them all and was still hungry before we got back from town :)
She however feeds through a gauss so it almost looks like the baby is suckling on her T-shirt and you don't see breast but I'm sure someone would still complain if they are that sensetive because lets be honest with a baby stuck on the end of it a lady will have to be rater err.....well built for you to see anything even without the gauss :)

an execellent point :!:
many resaurant's are not allowed to give people hot water fo babys bottles now days because of health & safety.
Frankly I find this post sexist! :x
Shouldn't both men & women be allowed to breastfeed in public? :?
