Has anyone got a TomTom GPS device and tried using their support?
I started looking into the TomTom Rider and found no end of complaints about their support department, including one place (http://www.caraudiodiscount.com/acatalog/tomtom_navigation.html) which has stopped selling them because the support is too bad.
Someone else was saying that they had problems with some maps they'd bought and emailed support but got a reply saying that they were too busy to help (!).

So, anyone got any experience, good or bad? I appreciate that people generally only speak up when they're complaining, so these comments may be masking the many satisfied customers.

As a side issue, I found only one place which was discounting the Rider (by about £10), everyone else selling at RRP, which would imply some kind of pricing restrictions, a la Sony, Levi etc.

Thanks

I await replies with interest myself, as im looking to buy the other half one for christmas.

As for the pricing, its always the same with the new models. After christmas, the prices will drop.

Im still really unsure about using a graphical mapping device on a bike!

I have Tom Tom on my sleigh. It works perfectly well. never had any cause to call their support however!

This is the impression I get actually - they're good devices and work well, but if you suffer any problems, you're on your own and that doesn't sound great to me, especially for £600.

I have been using TT for almost three years now. In that time I have only needed help from their support team once and that was an install problem. My question raised by internet was answered by email the next day and the question and answer posted on the support web site for all to reference.

Every other support question I have had has already been answered on the support page.

I have used TT3,TT5 & Navigon5 (all the europe maps). TT5 is what i used when i went to portugal without any problems. I have it all installed on my PDA/Phone.

Navigon 5 is ment to be very popular but i did not like it that much.

I did not bother to mount the unit as i had a tank bag and linked it to the power socket on the bike.

TT is a very stable package and most people never have to call them for support.

They are a bit slow on updates though. For example their latest TT5 is not compatable with Windows Mobile 2005, there is an unofficial hack though. This is odd as HP have got several pda devices with 2005 installed and TT will just not work.

I have used TomTom Navigator 3 on an HP ipaq Pocket PC for about a year without problems - including the installation of upgrades etc. It's very stable and directions are usually great. I had a minor issue at original install but got it sorted really quick by phoning the helpdesk - it was my firewall that caused a problem.

I've just taken advantage of a great deal to upgrade to ver 5 that includes maps for the whole of Europe. That was causing real hassle - got the software on but the maps wouldn't load. It said "Not enought space on Temporary folder - unable to run SETUP".

Solution? Copy the whole of Map CD1 (UK) to a folder on PC and run from there - it was trying to create a temp folder on a CD!

Rider DOES look good eh?

I have the TomTom Go for my car  (yes some of us do have these as well) and the only time I;ve had to get in touch with their customer services was when I found out I was menat to receiuve a free pouch, wnet to tehir website site and made my claim and pouch arrived promptly within a few days. Aprt from that never needed their suposrt and anything you need should be on their website.

What is teh best price you've had for the rider? I don't seem to be able to find anything less than £599 will be ordering mine shortly.

Thanks for that.

I think it was £589, but I'll try and dig it out for you tonight - I think I bookmarked it at home.

I'm running TT5 on my PDA and I've found Pocket GPS World (http://www.pocketgpsworld.com) forums to be a mine of information - well worth a look as they have plenty of reviews on hardware / software as well.

If you want a decent and cheap GPS, I think that you can't beat the Acer N35 for the price, it's about £250, comes with a built in GPS receiver and Destinator 3 rather than TomTom (although if you really want it you could install TomTom instead), but I've found it's just as good having used both, plus it has the advantage that it works fine shoved in a tank bag and it's a proper PDA also, rather than just being a sat nav only device.

Save some pennies and buy the n35, you won't be disappointed!!

That's fair enogh - go with somewhere you know.

You will of course be expected to spend your sick day (you are phoning in sick, aren't you?) testing it and writing a report for the rest of us... :-)

I want one of these too, damn pricy though, plus I'd need the 'in-car' kit so I could use it in the motor too; thats probably another £50/£100

No chance this year I think (unless Santa ram-raids the local GPS shop )

I run tt5 on my PDA. works great. lots of bleeping when I get near camera sites.

My gripes. When I deviate from a route it keeps telling me to turn round. It aint got the sense to realise that when I keep ignoring its instuctions that I know better the route than it does.

Other main gripe is that it is too damm distracting, occassionally find myself watching the screen and not the road. At that point it is time to turn off the display and just get audio instructions

simply having the thing turned on without a route is great for camera alerts

When travelling and I need to deviate because of trouble ahead. I don't want to stop and reset the route. Occassionally it wants me to go the long way round.

I suppose I should invest in TT traffic service and it would auto reroute me.
