Ooohh...my first poll!

I've got to get from near Farnham to Wakefield tomorrow, and return on Thursday. I don't want to be a wimp  but I am wondering whether, with the potential weather , I should just use the train instead.

The forecast shows light sleet for Wakey tomorrow, and rain for Thursday, but who knows what'll happen?!

I'd normally say take the bike, but this time went with the train. I think it was my aching back, and the mention of alcohol that did it :)

How many miles is it, how good is your winter kit ? How confident do you feel riding in this kind of weather ?

If you are in any doubt over any of this then at the moment with the roads in the state they are in I would go on the train.

*I'm a bit bonkers I'd still take the bike if it was me

Take the train, its forecast to snow in Surrey.

Long distance biking isn't great fun in this kind of weather. Sometimes it's better to wimp out and travel in (relative) comfort. Riding should be enjoyable, not worrying that your fingers are going to drop off because of the cold.

Cheers for the swift replies! (If it's to be by train I need to book today otherwise the costs rocket)

My winter kit is probably pretty good - I have the HG Cruise textile suit and heated grips. I don't have wintery boots tho - Alpinestars summat or others  :D

I have returned to two wheels this year, but had ridden throughout winter in the past.

Kate, where did you see the snowy forecast? Metcheck says it's ok.

Fizz, I think I'm pehaps a little like you! I do kinda like the challenge of the ride. Ok, in the grand scheme of things it isn't that challenging, but you know what I mean!

Head says train would be more sensible (and I'm sure my wife would prolly prefer that idea) but I'm still thinking bike....

Oh, distance is 210 miles each way!

If you dont have winter boots, then boy are you going to get cold feet !!!

I've got a pair of Summer Alpinestars SMX-3's and no way would I ride distance with those on, your feet will freeze and then you wont be able to brake or change gear as properly and I wouldnt risk it

I've also got a pair of SMX3 Goretex that I use in the winter now as I got fedup with getting cold feet

If I were you I would take the train

I opted for train... but he put booze with that option...

Seriously, I'd still go for the train. If the weather turns, you either have to risk riding in it, be stuck there or leave the bike behind... :?

Yeess...boots could be an issue! Perhaps I should just go buy some winter boots - after all I'm off to Northwich on Monday!!!

LOL @ Ping & the booze!

Ok, it's official - I'm letting the train take the strain.

I'll just have to get pished on the way back to make up for it! :D

yeah train most certianly

we seem to be having quite a cluster of gravitationally challenged people on this site recently

cant help but notice that everyone started throwing their bikes at the scenery at roughly the same time the gritters appeared....

Get on the bike, bring a pint of TEA (or Hop garden gold) over to me, then park your bike at Guildford station and get the train from there!!!! U near Tongham then!??!?!

I would say if the forecast was like today, then I would ride, but if not, I would train it. More time for booze and snooze.

That jorneys not too bad by train, tis really cold up here and the weather is very changable at the mo. We had a really bad snow shower out of the blue yesterday and I was bricking it thinking i'd get stuck. Take the train much safer and warmer

Sensible option is the train but there are downsides.
It costs a fortune.
At least the bike will get there,as trains can be so unreliable.

My NTL connection cr@pped out yesterday so didn't see the later replies.

Because I booked yesterday, and chose to travel later than ideal, the cost isn't too bad at £38 for two singles.

Hi trickywoos, yup, I live in Tongham. We always go to Aldersh!te to get the train as it's fairly regular and you usually get a seat.

As can be seen from my rant in IB, the train hasn't turned out to be such a good idea. :(

Nice, used to live in Ash. Never used to see SV's of any sort running around, apart from my Dad's 1000.
