I'm planning a trip "up Norf" to meet with some of the Pennine Massive and take in some of their wonderful countryside (and roads).

Plan is:

Friday evening - Ride up to Skipton
Saturday - Taken for a tour by the Peninne Crew
Saturday Eve: Some time with the locals - potentially a barbie if the weather's good (but we are talking about "Up Norf...")
Sunday - Depart South coming via Cat & Fiddle, Buxton, Matlock etc

Friday evening's route will be:
17:30 - Depart Cherwell Valley Services (J10 M40) A43 North East
18:00 - Arrive Rothersthorpe Services M1 Northbound Fuel Stop
18:15 - Depart Rothersthorpe Services M1 Northbound
19:30 - Arrive Woodall Services M1 North (J30-31) Fuel Stop
19:45 - Depart Woodall Services M1 North (J30-31)
21:30 - Arrive Skipton
It's mostly motorway all the way but it's the quickest way to get there. Time will be tight on Friday so we will be leaving on the dot. If anybody is seriously interested in joining me please let me know. El Boc will be helping us sort out B&B.
Please note:
1) This is NOT to be taken as AR'06, it is a personal thing I want to do but am willing to throw it open to those that want to join in.
2) Some of the roads we will be riding over the weekend are pretty complex, it's not for the inexperienced
3) I'm happy to pick up people at any of the above stops but I'm not making any other planned stops due to time

Scoobs - I'll see if I can get a weekend pass without MrsMatt if you like - we could meet Fizz & Liz on the A34 somewhere (Cheively Services?) at say 16:00 and then meet Steve at Cherwell (that would give us plenty of time for some food at Cherwell - wonder if they do cheesy chips :D )

Jelster

I was planning on a quick "chow session" at Cherwell myself.

Greg, I sort of planned the route via Rothersthorpe with you in mind... Should be easy for you to come in on the A14, (I think...)

Edit... Look at the map Jelster you tuit... A45 ???

Steve there aint no need to exclude people , we can cater for all skill levels, as long as those that feel they are a little slower can read a map and get to key points there is no problem. we have run many multi leveled rides with good success rates.

I agree some of the route is challenging and not for the faint of heart , but then again some of it will be boringly slow (probably the kirkstone pass , Summer tourists in 4x4's etc) so plenty of time to catch up with the faster guys n girls.

we do make good shepherds up her tha nos.

I haven't finally decided yet but depending on the numbers, we might do something like this: http://www.dalesbridge.co.uk/

There are other, similar places around but this one will serve to give you all some idea of what you are in for!

Hey Mr Ape! After all we've been through together (  ) I really do NOT want to interfere with that. No way!! We can do all this in July if needs be....temperature in the North will be in the high 20s by then (that's Fahrenheit by the way :? ).

Appreciate that Si, hence my comment at the start of the thread. We have a whole summer to play with so I can't see why the two cannot be fitted in. I don't want to drive a wedge in anywhere, and as I stated, this is something I intended to do anyway. The whole point of an organised ride is getting a date fixed so that everybody can work with it (or around it).

I reckon it's going to be about £60 in petrol alone. Depending on whether you camp or B&B it will be between £4 and £25 per night (based on Mr Boc's website), plus food and drink, so £500 cos I'm a rock hard southern shandy drinker.

Si, in Jelster's defence the idea of him infiltrating northern territory came during a little light hearted banter between himself,El Boc and I on The Pennine Massive a little while ago.

Steve did indicate that despite his misgivinga about us northern Oiks, he did fancy checking out some of our roads. It was a personal thing with him but he has been good enough to throw it open to everyone to join in.

Since the initial seed was planted the whole idea has taken off well and the logistics have been worked on at pace by a number of people.

It is going to be great to see so many peeps especially any of our suvvern bro's and sisters that travel up. But having said that even if Steve had kept it to himself I think the Three Musketeers would have still got out there and had a ball.

Been a regular visitor on raiding parties. Cattle are few and far between and they seem to guard their sheep better than their women for some reason.

Remember I also modeled the tasteful wet weather gear on El Bocs catherine wheel ride.

I mentioned this jolly day out to the memsahib last night. Whilst I have playing out rights. She seems to think she should accompany me, NFC. But assumming I am staying out and socialising I am suggesting that she stay at base camp and ensure beer is cold and El Bocs roadkill warm for our return.

I am a Northern Monkey (and the remark about the weather up there is spot on). But being a Northerner I am resilient (but I can't spell),
you can BBQ in any weather as long as you have an umbrella, so bring some change so everyone can chip in for a few throw away BBQ's from Tesco's and some burgers.

Cat N Fiddle is a great road, only done it once with the guys from my Thundercat site and Matlock is also some good riding. I think you guys would all enjoy it.

Righto chaps, listen in (ie, read) carefully:

This ride-out has developed a major life of its own and irrespective of AR06, SVRide North, the Ace Cafe Drum Majorettes Harley Davidson Knicker Showing Contest, and the arrival of the next Messiah, it looks rather likely to happen.

My chum Amarko has done amazing work on sorting out the route but, with something like 40 persons probably attending, accommodation is likely to be the stumbling block.

SO: it's time to start converting Good Intentions into Firm Commitment. Irrespective of your previous posts on this or any other thread, you must now do one of two things:
If you are intending to join us and require accommodation, either: pm me with details of your need (that is, how many of you, for which nights, single/twin/shared/double/camp) or post details on the Pennine Massive thread "South comes North etc". Note that I WILL be asking for a deposit in fairly short order to guarantee your bed.

That Pennine Massive thread now contains extensive route details, and Amarko and I will use it as the main "gathering" place.

If you DO NOT need accommodation, it is NOT essential to do that: the ride will be open to all. Note however that a BBQ is still planned for the Saturday night and, with various gifted musicians attending, perhaps a jamming session (as we old geezers might say). The night will be light as it's nearly mid-summer (in Yorkshire terms: all Polar bears emigrated, some leaves on trees, mild frost at night, heated underwear turned down to low).

Finally, it's not impossible that we will have overseas riders attending as I know Peter "veetwin" Henry is trying to get Morgasm, his new best friend from svrider.com, to come over......

(That last bit is a joke....all the rest is serious)

Thanks.

Jelster
15-01-06, 05:33 PM
I would like to reitterate a couple of things from my original "invitation".

I'm quite happy to ride up as a bigish group BUT I do want make everybody that is considering comming aware of what's expected, especially on the Friday night.

Friday Night

The motorways will be quite busy as we're leaving during the "rush hour" therefore:
We will be filtering whenever safe to do so, if you're joining us, you will be expected to do the same.

We will be keeping to the departure times, if you're not there we can't wait.

You will be expected to have enough fuel fuel to get to the next petrol stop.

The pace will be "brisk" as I don't want to get the B&B too late.
Saturday

Our friends in the North are organising a run on the Saturday. I'm leaving the route and the pace to them. I'm sure it will be good, as long as they remember that us Southerner's like to stop for a Cafe Latte every so often.

There is the possibility of a bit of a do on Saturday evening, which is great. Just remember that we have another ride planned for Sunday, it would be a shame to miss it because you over did it the night before

Sunday

I haven't yet worked out a departure time but it's unlikely to be later than 10am. The route will probably take us through the Peak District National Park, from Holme on the A6024, past Torside resovoir and into Glossop. From there the A537 to Buxton, stopping at the Cat & Fiddle, then onto Matlock Bath on the A6/B5056.

From there we'll look at the time and weather, and decide on a route back South.

General
Some of the roads we will be doing on both Saturday and Sunday are quite technical, so it's not for the inexperienced. (The cat & Fiddle run is said to be the most dangerous biking road in the country. I've never done it so I don't know, but it has a reputation.) I imagine the roads up at Hartside are just as technical.

Travel light, it's only 2 nights. The top you use for Saturday evening should be fine for Sunday - we're all friends here. I may not even take a tailpack, just a rucksack.

Maybe wise to "buddy up" so if anything does happen (puntures etc) you have somebody with you.

------------------------------

I'm not trying to put people off or trying to sound "big", but the last thing we need, is somebody not keeping up with the pace on Friday, or having a problem with the distances.

Friday evening is a 225 mile ride from J2 of the M40, 180 miles (and 3 1/2 hours) from Cherwell services. For the guys from the South coast it's even further.

If anybody who is going has a bike to bike system communications system can you let me know, as I'll make sure we can get the radios on the same frequency/channel.

I'm sure we'll all have a good time, as long as we all think about each other

.

I think the boys and girls travelling up should consider that the roads we will be riding will indeed at times be quite testing. However the severity of the test is governed by your own right wrist with the gas. We are doing things so that no-one gets over looked and should not get stranded if they back off the pace, for too long.

Oh and for the record, I'm definitely going up for the weekend, (so that's me and my two birds ) but have to combine a wedding anniversary  so a suitably sensitive approach (creeping!) is called for :)

S'all gone a bit quiet.

Have I missed something? Have hotels, B&B's, doss houses, brothels etc been reserved?

Do I need to hand over any cash to anyone (El Boc in particular).

The post in the Pennine section has more detail. Once numbers have firmed up and some details have been sorted we'll pick up from this thread again.

BUGGER!

Don't know how I missed this thread ](*,)

My relations are in Gargrave, just up the road from Skipton and it would have been a good excuse to spend a couple of hours with them in between riding the Dales etc.

Unfortunately I already have something planned for that weekend #-o

Ah well, maybe next time.

I was trying to work out who/what we've got...

I've confirmed that at least 2 of my mates will be with me for this....

So, West London Crowd:
Jelster - CBR954RR
Mate 1 - Peter - Hayabusa
Mate 2 - Taran - Speed Triple
Nick - GSXR600
AlanSV - SV1000S
(Possibly Topcat - CBR954RR)
(Possibly Rubberduckofdeath - ZX6)

We're a bit short of SV's at this point !!

The South Coast Mob:
Fizzwheel - GSXR750
Scoobs - CBR600RR
MattSV - SV1000S
Liz - SV650
Carsick SV650S

Others & possibles:
Jonboy
Hall13UK
Dr Rich
XVS2005
Baldyman + "Bird"

It's getting to be quite a group....... I guess there's quite a few "maybe's" too....

If anybody is seriously considering this, and is travelling up from the South, can you make yourselves known.

IMPORTANT

I am otherwise engaged from now until the end of April. When I return, I will be finalising the accommodation for the ride-out on w/e of 17th June. Amarko will need these details to finalise his routes.

So:

BY 12.00 noon, SUNDAY 30 April, PM either me or Jelster to confirm your overnight needs. (Steve - forward them to me please).

This means rooms/camping/beds/numbers/special needs etc etc. If you DON'T need accomodation, DON'T PM me.

On 1st May I will be booking it all. I will then be asking for deposits. If you aren't on the list then, TOUGH! TFL.

This is copied to the Pennine Massive Board

(PH - ignore this!!! You are sorted).

That vid is so old.... That was somewhere in the region of Boxhill I believe...

And no, we will all be staying rubber side down, shiney side up (well, depending on how much beer is consumed on the Saturday evening, I could well be horizontal by 10pm....)
