View Full Version : Chicken Strips
Now everyone knows mine are legendary in their immenseness, but why is everyone so concerned about them?
I am neither the fastest or the slowest rider out there and I "think" I can hold my own on a rideout. I have never felt the need to rub my shoulder on the tarmac to get round a corner. Is it "really" necessary other than to get pub points? Or is it like asking for a coke in a pub? Should I be shunned for being a big chicken stripped, shandy drinking pooftah (no offence).
*edit* D'oh! Please move to idle banter!

Probably. I've already got a receding hairline but I'm combing the rest over that for now.

Well in my humble opinion, from what I've seen, you're not a slow rider... so I'm more impressed that you manage to preserve your chicken strips

You've hit the nail on the head J. I'm trying to preserve my chicken strips.
i have chicken strips. i couldnt give a flying monkeystoss what anybody says about them! i'll join in the banter and have a laugh if anybody wants to take the micky, but it isnt something i would be concerned about.
i'll stick to trying to keep it rubber side down for the time being, what angle of lean i get in achieving that is neither here nor there.

Nah, you're all just trying to get my "King of the Chicken Strip" title away from me!!! :x I won't let you, you hear!? [-X [-X :D
On a more serious tone, I'm with KeithD on this one. Couldn't care less, as long as I arrive safely everywhere I set off to.

If you ride a lot in the winter you're going to get them (even more so if you commute) as there's no way you're going to be cornering like you do on a sunny Sunday afternoon.
I know how good my tyres looked after a track day, so I'm not bothered about what others think. I also know that my cornering is pretty awful at the moment too... (roll on the spring and a couple of track days!).
.
I just take it as something to joke about. no 1 really cares bout it that i know. and as jelster said, if you ride all year round you will have them @ some point especially in the winter.
Now in idle banter as requested.
Chicken strips, yup I have them too. Used to be on the same train as others about getting rid of them asap. Now I couldn't care less.

Scoobs you dont ride slow at all mate 8)
I've got em to, I dont think you'll ever really get rid of them without doing a trackday
Mind you I always have a look at mine after a spirited ride to see if they've got any smaller
I think its more to do with riding style than anything else.

Felipe....Are there no corners at all in your part of Portugal?
This strip lark is all baloney guys. On my rear Michelin Sport you can feel the roughness all the way to the edge of the tyre but a fine line remains proud all the way around. The front tyre is a milliion miles off what some might call an acceptable lack of strip.
But it is not all down to corner speed and winter conditions, there can be a big difference in the profile of different tyres. Some make it feel just so natural to be leaning further and further, when others make you feel like your just going to flop on to your side.
Having said that I have never felt 100% about my sports and am very shortly going to pop on some Powers which by all accounts should give me miles o smiles! 8)
going to pop on some Powers
That's what I have on mine.
I have probably have about 0.5 inch chicken strips on my rear Road-Attack.
I also quite often order a (Diet) Coke in the pub (when I'm riding/driving).
Wear your chicken strips with pride !!

The guys over here have a much nicer phrase for them, they call them "Hero lines". Therefore possibly less stigma to admitting that you have them! 8)
They're just tyres...

Just measured by hero lines/chicken strips/pussy stripes and the rear is 180mm and front is 120mm.

Peter Henry nailed it I think... Plus different profiles are physically harder to get to the edge of the tyres. Metzeler/Pirellii carcasses have a road surface that physically goes round further than some others- Pilot Powers get to the edge far faster than Sportecs, for example.
Plus, of course, if you place your body weight right you don't need to lean the bike as far- so if you're as fast as your mates but have bigger strips (and the same tyres) that actually prives you're making better use of your body weight.

That's true Northy, but you could have greater conrner speed leaning it as much and having the correct body position.
The size of your strips is also down to the bike's geometry. I found my SV could go to the edge back and front, the GSXR nevers seems to lose all the strip from the front whereas the rear is on its rims.

oi whats wrong with asking for a coke in a pub !???
last year on my 010's during summer i has no chicken strips what so ever, but then in august last year i had an off which i feels may in part be down to the tyres. because they always felt unsteady in the wet. this year i have diablos & the strips are huge at the moment, but i hope to get them down a lot come summer. I don't care about the how big the strips tbh i just ride for myself.

and boy do they do they take an interest in your riding especially when you overtake a car when you shouldn't i.e when the said police man is driving the other way (towards you) and then catches us all up and hands out leaflets about safe riding
There are both sensible and ludicrous arguments for & against chicken strips, but they are all pointless; hot wings are much nicer!
On bike tyres though, I often think chicken strips are dangerous things, almost as bad as toe and knee sliders. ANYTHING that inspires macho peer presssure is a bad thing.
Folks worry about them, and worried bikers are accidents waiting to happen.
Forget about 'em, relax & ride for enjoyment rather than the removal of a pristine piece of rubber.

I took mine off after I pulled up at some lights and a pedestrian looks at my sliders and says 'New, are they?'

Now that i dont have a bike to ride, i stare longingly at my leathers hung up in my room.
Both sliders are worn right down, the toe sliders on both of my boots are sufficiently scrubbed down, both front and rear tyres had NIL chicken strips, and even better, the hero blobs under my feet pegs were worn down... angle of the dangle is directionally proportionate to the heat of the meat etc.
I used to ride like i had a bee in my helmet... fast in the country side, and steady in town... but i rode so damned fast... (balls out all the time) in the country that it eventually got me a nice hefty driving ban.
Nothing to be proud of itself.. but i still look at my leathers and remember days gone by...
Ahh... the good ol days. :(

Yes, that is the glaring flaw in my argument :) But you can counter by saying that you already go as fast as is safe on the road- this is my universal copout.

I dont do KFC! wall maby a bit on the left, but only a couple of mm. This wasnt done on the public roads though. Mallory park summer 2005. The back tyre had no chicken strip at all and had a lot more blisters!!!

1) Well done, but get some titanium ones, and put some thumb tacks in them. Last ages!
2) Anyone can get their toe down, doesn't take much effort at all, but you are forgiven for the following two..
3) Good lad, as it should be!
4) Nice, mine are ground down a fair way too :)

I dont like getting my knee down as my old rugby injuries start to give me jip.
I have been having the same problem with my golf and asked the local Pro the best way to get out of all the bunkers I keep getting in to. He suggested opening the club face a little more or standing with the ball further forward in my stance. He looked somewhat puzzled when told that the problem was not in getting the ball out of the bunkers ...but myself!
