Too right, considering I ended up paying approx £350 for 98.5!

Shame the story is so brief, what were the traffic conditions like I wonder. All very well the police being po-faced BUT if he was the only thing on the road then it's hardly the crime of the century.

Don't they means test these fines ? My brother got caught doing 120mph on the m6 toll and got a 7 or £800 fine (reduced to about £500 as he turned up to court on time). He earns a decent wedge and had to submit financial information before hand.

I do remember some talk about £10/mph over the limit though which would make sense in his case .......

Bit of a boring write up wasn't it? Usually you can rely on dramatic phrases like.

" careered along on his high powered machine"

"leaving fellow road users in his wake"

doesn't it say he was actually banned for six months? he also had to pay costs. Was anyone here banned?

"Fortunately Mr Butler has not added to the casualties."

Because they can't fine dead people.

Tim Butler, of Almeda Road, St George, Bristol, was stopped by police after officers spotted him pulling out from a slip road straight into the third lane.

Oh no stop the press, never seen anyone do that before

There was a report on this morning's Sky news that a 21 year old man
was caught driving his father's Porsche Boxster at 149 mph. He got
away with it because his lawyers argued in court that it was a
straight stretch of road and he was doing 149 only for a short
while.

The bottom line is that some people can afford good lawyers.

I wouldn't mind betting if he turned out to be one of the boys in blue, he would have been getting familiar with the handling of his machine.
One rule for us & one for you pesants springs to mind.

Apparently, the culprit is a carpenter! But his father may be some
big shot. This carpenter may still face charges related to driving
his father's car without insurance.

There is an article about this in one of today's papers. The guy
doing the press review on Sky news brought this up as a matter of
interest. It would be good if someone finds the paper in question
and posts a link or a scan.

Sounds reasonable to me - the police didn't over dramatise it and the guy only got banned for 6 months after which he'll have a clean license - result

He was probably getting used to the handling!

Until he comes to get insurance again...... Just because you hve no points doesn't mean your licence is "clean"... The offence still sits on your licence for 4 years. Maybe somebody that has had a ban before can confirm this, but I'm pretty sure you don't get a clean slate afterwards.

i read somewhere recently that a guy got off a 140mph charge in scotland because speed cameras are not approved for use there

sorry Jelster, I meant that at least the points will be cleared off so no worries on the totting up. Let's face it, a conviction for 145mph is going to affect your insurance! Still, I think that he was fairly treated.

Didn't someone go to prison for 147mph? This guy got off lightly if you look at it like that. Wonder what a prison record does to your insurance?

just reading into this... apparently home office type approval for speed cameras only applies to england and not any dependent areas!!! surely that means that every single conviction in these areas is unsafe and should be overturned?

I thought so. I was under the impression that 30 miles over the posted limit = a ban. 60 miles over the posted limit (so, on a motorway/NSL dual carriage way, 130mph) = automatic "dangerous driving" and hence the possibility of jail time.

I'd also point out in relation to the original story that "going straight from the slip road to the third lane" is fairly subjective. Did he teleport there? No course not, he moved there via the other 2 lanes. How quick does it have to be? If it's clear and you're going to overtake traffic in lanes 1&2 (which at those speeds, he probably would be), surely it's the right course of action. Looks like a case of, "he wasn't actually doing anything dangerous, so we'll call his manouevres into question to sex the story up a bit." to me... :?

This is just another example of the overwhelming superiority of the SV_ you won't catch us getting banned for doing 145mph ;) And if we do, we've got a pretty good appeal!

...Or some pretty flash tuning work on our bikes.

I agree, I like to think of it as "incapable of jail inducing speeds" :D

Thanks, chazzyb, for posting the link! It is bizarre that this
guy got away with doing 150 in a 60 zone.

That's how I think of it too, funnily enough. Today I raced a surprisingly quick chavmobile up to 100, after that I let him away (he had a head start) for example. On a private road of course ;)
