Converting Off Road to Road Legal

Does anyone know whats involved from a DVLA side point in converting an off road Motorcross bike to a road legal machine. I am looking at buying a cheap motorcross bike for use on green lanes but it hasnt been registered at all so there are no papers with it. Any help appreciated... :?:
