I sucessfully removed the brake pins that have been mentioned so many times, ( thanks for the guidance all those who replied ), but I mullered one of the clips that holds them in, by initially turning the pin with a 5mm socket before removing the caliper and looking how it all works
I thought I'd best get a bag of replacements, but having a right bugger of a job.
First off, identifying the things, they seem to be called any one of :

Clevis pin clips
R clips
Retaining clips
Beta pins

and they come in a zillion sizes. I figured they can be defined by their absolute dimensions, ( wire diameter / length ) or by the diameter of the pin they are to fit onto. I keep looking, but pictures are deceiving - one kit was suitable for hitching trailers to tractors, but looked right... just a matter of scale!

Anyone offhand know what size I need, link to a site where I can get a bagfull or a selection box with sizes small enough?

R-clip.

Take your remaining one to a bike shop, failing that the one I've just measured is 15 mm long overall, and the wire is 1.25mm diameter, that should get the point across when asking for one.

Somewhere in the garage I've got about a dozen. I'll have a root around tonight and I'll let you know if I can find them. If I can I'll send you a couple, if you can wait a couple of days.

Cheers Keith

Curious, and with idle time to spare, after reading Sids post I just stripped them down again to look at the good R clip. Its definately 20mm long and 1mm diameter wire, different to Sids 15mm/1.25mm. My bike is a K5.
Anyway, after a major rummage I have found a small amount of stainless R clips, slightly smaller but fit perfectly.
Thanks to all for the offers, equally I too now have a few if anyone gets caught out and needs one.
