View Full Version : Cure sought for a heavy cold
I've had one heavy cold after another after another, S brings them home from school. It's really getting me down :( :( I'm so fed up with the feeling of wallpaper paste between my ears, can't hear on the phone, sound like a scouser, and I've even been tempted to start on my summer anti-histamines and steroid nasal spray, just to clear my goddamn blocked crap sinuses, thank you dad for giving me these... But I know that if I do, I won't be able to stop until September :(
So, does anyone have an effective cure for a stinky ****ing headcold? I'm desperate guys [-o<

Vitamin C - lots of it
Get a tube of the big 'pills' that you dissolve in water from Sainburys or one of the other supermarkets own brand versions as they're around 95p, instead of £3 or more from Sevenseas. I think each pill has around 300% of the RDA
It seems to work for me, even having to sit on the train every day with dirty bu**ers coughing away  - another reason for commuting by bike :D

I mentioned this thing before, and, I am a bit sheepish to mention it again.
But, here goes.
There is a thing called a Neti Pot. You buy or make normal saline (ie, just throw some salt into water), and warm it till its ~37C.
You then... sigh... tilt your head forward and to the side, and pour it into one nostril. There. Said it.
The saline goes in one side, through your sinus cavities in your skull, all the way across, and out the other side. Along with loads of snots and mucus and crap.
You keep doing this, from both sides, till your head is clear. It works astonishingly well. You can sleep better, breathe better, you lose that wierd pressure feeling in your head... and other good things.
You still have the cold of course, but paracetamol seems to take the brunt of that problem. This thing just clears your head out.
I do it now just whenever I brush my teeth. Just cause I like the way a clear head feels. But, whenever I get sick, this is the first thing I am on top of.
Yeah. There you go.

If you are getting one... buy a plastic one or a metal one. The traditional indian clay ones just break and are a pain.

Only had one virus all winter so far. I have fkd sinuses too. Try:
- Echinacea and zinc to ward off lurgies to start with
- Put olbas oil in your oil burner next to the bed with the door shut about 20 mins before you go to bed to really ease the congestion.
- Lemon & ginger tea if you're sinussy and in pain to ease the inflammation.
All works for me.

Oh yeah, vitamin C to help you try and clear the infection. Load it in.
I am in agreement with Mr Toad. Back off on the dosage once you are well. You just **** off excess vit c, giving your liver work.
Another thing that my gf uses, and really likes are: oh god, well, non-pathogenic bacteria. She takes this tablet every day, containing soil microbes. The idea is, that your immune system is just generally kept awake with all these new antigens flying about, and therefore is more likely to jump on other incomers. Its also sugested that it reduces unwanted / inapropriate immune responses like allergies, and even auto immune disorders. (MS, Crohns, Rheum. Arth. blah blah)
Same ish sort of logic that these guys use with their hookworms:

Shed load of multi-vitamins (Tesco/Sainsbury's own brand,) paracetamol for high temperature (2 every 4 hours,) plus if you really feel 5h1te, Ibuprofen 2 hours after you've taken the paracetamol (must be after food - Maximum of 8 in 24 hours :!:)
Those Eucalypyus 'plug-ins' are good too (if a little anti-social )
Get well soon mate
Being diabetic i had the flu jab last October but it is avaliable to anyone who asks so something to think about next year.

Not true. Strictly speaking you need to be in an "at risk" group such as diabetic (like you), asthmatic (like me) or elderly (like a lot of people on here  ). Also if you work in the health sector where you are exposed a lot.
This past year, the stocks were used up for the people in need just before christmas because of a lot of people panicing over this bird flu which it doesnt even work for. So i had to wait until late january for mine.
Anyway, flu jab doesnt work for "man flu".

Dear God whatever you've got is clearly very serious, if it has unpleasant effects like that.
My thoughts:
Whisky, perhaps not too much, but I'm quite serious - it definatlely works, and also Olbas Oil, it clears out your head really well. There is a common misconception that when you're a bit bunged up it's snot that's blocking your tubes, this is apparently not the case, what's happening is that the infection is causing your airways to be inflamed, Olbas Oil and other such decongestants have their greatest effect by reducing the inflammation and allowing you to breath easier.

How come nobody has mentioned garlic yet!
Eat lots of garlic!
As far as i know, vitamin C is just to prevent a cold, not cure it.
The thing mentioned above, the salt and water mixture, that is pretty much the content of your average nasal spray. Ive tried it my self (not with the funnel in my nose thing, that looks to advanced for me, but just by dripping it in my nose as with old school nose drops).
If you try a few things, there is probably gonna be a nice placebo effect as well, so you will feel better.
Colds are annoying.
Get well

Its an essential vitamin for the immune system. So if your immune system is run down anyway, it helps you get better as well.
You're all wrong.
Long, very hot bath, with some decongestant oils if you can find some - eucalyptus bath oil does well.
Followed by...
The hottest curry you can possibly handle - if you can push to a Fahl, all the better, but we want at least a good Madras here, preferably Vindaloo. Beer not allowed.
Finally...
Early to bed.

Keep warm. Viruses don't like heat too much. Take vitamins, zinc & garlic and eat currys and chilli - as hot as you can stand. Cold viruses aren't curryholics, they can't stand the stuff.
Some people swear by echinacia (sp?) but I've never found it to be much use.
The neti pot sounds interesting. I'll mention it to Mrs Wyrdness who has lots of sinus trouble.

Sweating it out helps with a hot toddy (brandy or whisky choice is yours maybe a malt  )

If the cold gets worse you should be careful you don't get a penchant for shell suits and hubcaps then heavier medication may be needed
Thanks for all the suggestions, I am going to zap these bugs. They don't know what's in store. I never used to get colds until S started at school, and kids bring home absolutely every germ going. And now they go straight to my sinuses and cause a sinus infection, so all that comes out is green muck. Nice eh????
whiskey mixed with some clear honey & fresh lemon juice, works for me most of the time.

I know this much that may be of help Sy.
Your body will not assimilate more than it can handle of Vitamin C. Many people assume if they take 1000x the RDA then they are really dosing themselves up. Sadly untrue as your body simply passes out what it cant take in.
Yes you need more vit c when sick to assist your immune system but overloading it wont help. Wont make it worse mind you but wont make you better quicker.
Naturaly remmedies are ace to boost the immune system, chilli and garlic really do jump start you.
Try a simple Bruschetta with lots of garlic and chillin the tommato mix. And stay well away from the Mrs :)
I have a book at home "The Toa of Helth Sex and Longevity"* and in that they swear by using a Neti pot, almost at the first sign of any illness and since it based on ancient remidies well before the evil pharmaseutical industry grew up about us, i guess it must be good stuff.
*Also has lots of advice about how many times to have sex in a year and how many times to release ejaculate too  And its a lot loss than any of us would imagine!!!

Thank christ someone else has heard of that Neti thing. I feel like a Jehovas Witness or something when ever I mention it.
Just since we are on the topic... Vit C.
Right, so Linus Pauling started this its good for colds stuff. He is the only dude to win two Nobel prizes (AFAIK), so you have to listen to him. Some people are not so happy with this vit C idea.
(Like this guy: http://www.quackwatch.org/01QuackeryRelatedTopics/pauling.html)
So, I think that it has not been formally proven one way or the other that mega doses of vit c are good for losing the cold. And, it is correct that you just pee any excess off very quickly. But, it doesnt put that much strain on your body, and some people (ie serious Med people) still say its good.
I would probably take the large dose tablets through the spell of the infection, augment it with various other things that you can pick up at the health shop if you like, aswell as garlic, eat well, drink loads, sleep as much as you want, and stay off the heavy doses of vits when you get well.
You know... I keep on thinking about that unlucky bugger with Crohns who posted up here earlier. Imagine being sick your whole life.
Good luck mate.
If its a proper mans cold then its a case of grin and bare it there is no cure we just suffer quietly and get on with life.
