i become full power in june (yay no more 33bhp) and i did an insurance quote for a rang of bikes,

Z100 was £1049 tpft
but what scared me was the TL quote - £849 tpft which is very tempting (and i do have a death wish) and i know i can get all thease quotes cheaper!

Why dont you spend some time learning to ride the SV first?

Totally pointless wasting time looking at what bike you can afford to insure in a year! Anything can happen from now to then so be realistic and enjoy what you have now :D

Have a chat with Cloggsy :)
I am thinking about new bikes too, while at the same time blatently am not a great driver on the SV. (A mate of mine killed ie KILLED me on the twisties on a... ahem, GS1150.
YEsh. There is a lot to be said for getting good, but at the same time new bikes are shiney ... Mmm... shiney.

(In fairness, the same guy destroyed two guys on Ducatis. They looked cool on the Ducs, but looked less cool with a lad on a huge beemer weeing all over them.)

Post up some links to picys of the models you like... 8)

I'm currently looking around for what I'll get as my second bike, in the summer. My quotes are about that for fully comp on the TLR or a Falco etc.
I think I'm going to get something cheap and comfortable like an old bmw to cover lots of miles to save the SV.

Meh, the engine is doing fantastically, it's just everything else needs a good clean and a few things need repainting.

haha I dare not get any quotes on how much the insurance will be on a z1000 when I eventually get one...

K6 fully faired SVS1000 = £450
K6 GSXR-600 = £400

Fully comp 8) there are some advantages to being over 30

Quotes were from Ebike

Z1000's are very cheap to insure.. in my case cheaper to insure than the SV is.. i don't know why, i was surprised! the only reason i didn't get one was because i don't really like in line fours.. they are a bit characterless

my sv650 cost me £350 last year but ebike quoted £500, so i should be able to get it cheaper,

i was just worred that it would cost £850 for a 20yr old on a TL1000

Keep it for a good while yet, I wish I'd kept my SV longer, especially after all this bollox with the KTM dealer

with respect thats a huge jump in performance from a 33bhp restricted SV to a 100 bhp + TL.... I looked at TL's a while ago, they are a bit old school now and I think you'd struggle to find a good one. Which is what put me off getting one next.

If you want more of the same what about an SV thou ?

Why dont you see what the SV is like destricted and then make your mind up ?

well i thought about a SV1k and i would get exactly the same style as i have now and people would not notice (maybe a good thing) and i love Vtwins and i would not go and buy a TL on the day i get full power, but i know (and people who know me know) that i will be itching for a change after about 6 months of my full power sv, and for a little bit more tax, a smidgin on the insurance and a good price on my 650 i think that i could do it without too much extra cost.

shame they dont do a naked TL (yet)

They never will either, they stopped making TL's in 2002 IIRC

I see what you're saying and I'm just as bad every time I go into a dealer I think.. oh that looks nice how much does that cost, can I afford to insure it. Dont forget a bigger bike with more power is going to cost more to run as well. Dont forget to cost this factor in that you're going to need to replace rear tyres and chains and brake pads on a more frequent basis on a bigger bike.

they are a bit characterless

I think (having owned singles,P-twins,V-twins, triples & IL4's) it's unfair to say that, a different character, ho yes, to some better, to others worse, frame of reference comes in to play as well( how many types have you owned?).

All bikes have their place and you buy accordingly when you know what your type is (and this changes all the time), of course until then you buy on others recommendation and guess work, then just come out with the old lines about your type of bike being great and different types not as good. .

Realistically, I don't think anyone who knows would say the SV is the best bike you could get, it just happens to be one of those bikes that come along every once in a while that works exceptionly well for where it's aimed.

Back in 2002 I was pleasantly surprised at how good the SV was for a little v twin motor and a budget chassis, but I never expected it to perform like my previous bike and it didn't, but came surprisingly close.

My point?, The SV is good, and yes this is an SV site, but let's not get carried away here people, given a wider perspective the merits of all the engine configurations become apparent.

Cheers Mark.

i know, i am saying that mine would become naked (possibly) its a long way off but i like to know what my options are, i have spent 2 years waiting and only have a couple of months left and because i know that i will want to change after about 6 months.

i know it will cost more to run but then i can do everything my self (i am a bike mechainc) but its just an option at the mo (it surprised the hell out of me)

Ah OK right I didnt realise you were a bike mechanic, now I'm jealous

I think the insurance on the TL is lower because the bike is older and therefore worth less than the Z1000 that you also got a quote for. Insurance is weird

A naked streetfighter TL if thats what you are thinking off would certainly be pretty cool though.

Steep. Those things would get robbed out from underneath you if you slow down to less than thirty though.

Seriously, a 999s would last a few hours left out around most of Dublin.

that was only 1 company,

well my other bikes have been different (a little)

i had a scooter when i was 16
when i was 17 i had a xvs125 (hence name) which was a v twin (but different)

i have ridden singles (BMW F650 & MZ Bagera ) , inline fours (zx9r  ) at work (on private roads) and diddent enjoy them as much as my sv (i didn't ride them much, i was moving them)
but come july i will be doing some test rides on different types of bikes.

Any way i have just brought a 999 (but it needs work and could be too small)

Indeed wise words. At times a degree of clouded vision is evident at remarks being passed regarding bikes from other manufactures which is just frankly wrong. 8)
