ok, so it looks like im never going to lose wheight and although i love my SV it is a bit cramped, underpowered up for up larding around, and uncomfy for my missus, so were looking at a suitable replacement, thought about an sv 1000 but the comfort problem will still exist and for the hike insurance their looks to be better options, dont want a big tourer or anything, and i like to be a hooligan (on suitable private roads of course)
im not going down the blandit route, no way not ever,
so im looking at a gsx1400, i think they look awesome, overkill? nah,,,,,
ive been looking on gsx1400.org, but its not quite as developed as our site ;)
anyone have any experience with theses other than the earthquake type noise when /if you pass one???
I'd go for the ZRX1200 or the CB1300 in preference over the GSX.
Just my £0.02.

I thought about one before ai bought the (K5) SV, but was a bit big for commuting. The Kwak comes out best in all the like for like tests, but I prefer the look of the GSX. The XJ is nice, but the CB is better.
The CB does get the usual "bland" comments, but in this case I think it definately looks it. GSX is a nice machine, great for 2 up up work, but they don't like being pushed hard in the twisties...

i like the kwak, but my missus has summat against green, shes says its bad look, and i dont think it looks as good in any other colour, dont like the hoda or the yam, either, the gsx looks really good vlue for what you get

Im considering one of these for my next bike.
Or possibly a 2nd hand fazer 1000.

Okies
My mates all have these kind of bikes. The GSX14, the ZRX12, the CB13 and a Yam XJR. They are all great and all have very slighlty diferent characteristics. They are all quick in a straightline, comfortable and very very grunty. The GSX is a great bike, however, didtch the twin pipes in favour of a single can and a power comander if you buy one of the earlier bikes. 20% increase in power to weight etc! It has stunning brakes, and is as comfortable as anything. Its the fastest out of the group and also the heaviest. Does everything that this kind of bike should do. Anotehr mate had a supercharged version running 250 at the rear wheel!! The Kwak handles the best out of the lot isnt that much slower, but imo not as comfortable. The Lawson rep is ok if you like that kind of thing. You do get Kwak build quality but also high parts prices (Mate paid £90 for a set of brake seals). I liked this, as it felt lighter and more responsive. The CB i havent ridden, but its a honda init!! The XJR, well, Jase is tiny, and could touch the floor, which he struggled with on all the others. It was his work horse. Most of the time 2 up with a lot of lugguage(I will dig out a photo one day!!) and it done the job.
I know that this dont helo, but in theis class of bike, there isnt much between them, only subtle differences. Id recomend, testing them all and picking one.

Cpt Nemo....For goodnesssake buy one.
I've got one, and wouldn't have anything else......
Sure the rear shocks are a weak point, mine have been changed and thats it in total - four years.
It drinks fuel for fun though, 24 mpg in city.....
Two of my mates have a ZRX and CB13, the ZRX is a bit revvy and not relaxing to ride, the CB.....if it stays in gear.......is more sorted than the 14, but hasn't got anywhere near the torque. I tried the SV 1000 at the time of buying mine, but as I do a lot of motorway miles the GSX won hands down. In 13k miles it has cost me a front and back tyre, so what you loose in fuel costs, you gain in maintenance.
Pop onto 1400.org, as there is a thread there for a new member asking the same questions.

Go for it. Gotta be blue n'white....faster etc.
Bought mine new k2. 34,000miles later and I am just replacing my shagged shocks. A sprocket carrier bearing at 16,000(replaced under warranty). A fork seal( an excuse to put heavier oil in).
Being using the SV to commute and jumping back on the beast(for it is..if you want  ) still with SV throttle control , scared the s**t out of me. SUPERB!
Commuted for 3yrs on it , EASY.
Get a test ride. I was sold and dissapeared for 2hrs. Obviously does not sound as good as a twin but sticking on an Akra/Laser/Yoshi + PCIII gives you a completely different moto. Weight, power and torque.
Been a coupla big trips through Spain and France, 2 up.Hard luggage. Still goes 150.( Ok for seconds rather than miles) 160miles+ tank.Pish case.
Lusted after a XJR for many years then ZRX. Went to a bike show and compared them to the GSX. No contest. CB no faster. ABS?
Absolute weapon in town. Tickle throttle an woosh. Sportbike boy is still trying to keep his Fireplace from flipping away from the lights.... (boy racer   ).
Don' t need to be doing 130+ to feel your having fun.
bias ? who?

GSX1400s seem like good value till you find out you can get a Spondon GSXR1100 for less  Like a Bandit 12, with the rubbish surgically removed.
But then, that's possibly not the sensible choice ;)

Those are generally a bit harder to insure than a near-stock GSx-14 though, aren't they?

Probably, yes :) But you can't have everything.

Why not ?
I want my cake and I want to eat it, or else what's the point of the cake in the first place ?

have you looked at a TDM 900 then
not that i am biased or anything
Although I quite like the look of the GSX1400 (particularly in the new black), I don't think it even compares to the Triumph Speed Triple, which would certainly be my choice - okay it's not retro, but it's certainly is a muscle bike.

Being a bit of a tub of lard myself I traded my SV for a CB1300... For a long time thought I'd get a GSX 1400 cos I think they look the best of the big nakeds; in the end went for for the CB cos the SV build quality put me off Suzukis and having read some of the stuff on the GSX site it seems there were similar problems with build quality (and there's even more fiddly bits to clean than on the CB  )
The CB doesn't look as good as the others IMHO but is better in black than red and white; I can't understand the comment about lack of torque which is where it scores heavily from 2000 RPM; apart from the headers the build quality has been very good and it's been totally reliable. I don't undertsand why these kind of bikes don't come with centre stands as standard and the headlights on the CB are weak but it's a good bike to ride providing you don't expect it to handle like a sportsbike.... very smooth, planted and loads of torque.
Would agree the Speed Triple is nice but it's quite a bit pricier than the others and not discounted...

the triumph speed tripple is a monster but one of my requirements is pillion comfort, it makes the sv look like a sofa, im not keen on a tdm although i can see why people who have them really like them, i quite like the vstrom, and ive ridden a honda varadero 1000, which was wxcellent, but theyre a lot of cash for what they are.
i think the cb1300 is probably a bettter "quallity" bike but it doesnt make my heart jump when i look at it, the gsx1400 looks mental stood still, im a liitle worried that the lack of wind protection will be annoying, but im a big lad i can open sauce bottles on my own and stuff........im not wanting to change while late summer autumn i think, im off to the tt in june so i dont want to be going on an unfamiliar bike, my bikes under warrently till october as well so it makes sense to keep it a little longer.
ive seen the gsx1400 for £5600 new at padgett (also where i bought my SV from) and ive seen them on an 03 for about $4300, i think id prefer a new one though, just for piece of mind, though if anyone has proof its possible to thrash a 1400cc bike id like to see it.........................
I did exactly what you are looking to do, and changed to a gsx1400 recently. The motivation was almost entirely comfort for longer journeys, and pillion provision. I did some 3 hour-ish journeys with my girlfriend on the sv, and the second half wasn't all that fun. The gsx is far more comfortable, and all the torque means you can have quite a relaxed ride if you want. It goes pretty well when you want it too though :)
Mine is a k3, and suffered from the broken rear shock symdrome. I replaced them with a set of hagons, and as well as being fixed it handles far better. It'll never be a sportsbike, but I'm enjoying having to put the effort into riding it, and am probably as quick in the twisties as I was on my sv. It's also great fun grinding the pegs at will, something I never really did on the sv
I do miss my sv, but I'm glad I made the switch for the comfort on the longer journeys. We are also going to the TT, but going for practise week so we get to see the classic bike races :)

No, that was the Yam, (XJ1300sp) which I am told was not "proper" Ohlins anyway....

Yamaha own Ohlins, so it is proper Ohlins just not very good Ohlins. Just a rebadged standard shock.

I know a bloke who has a TL1000-R. Its slightly heavy, slightly tall, slighty cumbersome and slightly slow compared to my dads gixxer 6, and his mates zx6's etc. Dont get an "R", get an "S". I hear maxton can sort that dodgy rear suspension suzuki has going on, and i also hear Hypero do an excellent sterring damper.
Both the "R" and the "S" sound feckin' awsome with loud cans on, louder than loud!!!!
I've also heard of some problesm with SV1000's...my dad knows a bloke who got one and the cylinders where knocking in the bores. Is this a widespread problem? The guy took it back to his dealer and they swaped it for a gixxer thou.
Matt
I had a TLR from new and I loved it.Mate of mine had TLS and he loved it.Totally different bike except for name!TLR has plenty torque and stormin top end where as TLS had loads of bottom end(and wheelies everwhere :D )Only problem i had was rear shocker came loose! Most TLR's have had shockers modded or changed for ohlins etc by now.God I think I am talking myself into one not you mate
