Probably not very much help...
But, I do Linux sys admin / apache security / mysql admin / ACEdb admin and that sort of thing.
Coding mainly Perl, (bit of C#/Java/ shell scripting)
A lot of CGI muck unfortunately, backending into MySQL and ACEdb (I used to do nice distrib objs /JSP/SOAP sort of stuf)
Main part of my job is genomics data mineing... which is messy stuff.
I would like to spend more time doing pure Bioinformatic codey things though (as time goes on),

I suppose I am saying... lots of UNIX / Linux sys admin is getting boring. I prefer doing sort of big number crunching genomic data mining. But, I think you have to be clever to be good at this.

Bit of everything except NIX systems. Put my head to new stuff if it seems intresting.
hi
i started out as an it admin on windows NT, 2000 - then moved to designing active directory infrastructures for biggish companies.. got a bit boring after a while so i made the transition over into a development role where i spent most of the time now - languages mainly C# but also VB.NET, Java, Javascript, etc..
eventually i want to take all my skills and move into a data analysis role, big opportunities there.. started writing some custom reporting engines for clients now which sadistically i find very absorbing :|
feel free to give me a shout if you need help

I'm currently a student but still working as a developer. I'll be going back soon to work as a troubleshooter and customer engineer, hopefully moving onto management as the company expands.

been cutting code for about 25 years, started with APL then Fortran/Basic in the late 70s, moved into systems programming and real time stuff in the early 80 so got into 16 bit macro assemblers on PDP and CA Naked minis. mid 80 moved into vax so 32 bit macro assembers and complex instruction sets plus c language
In late 80 sunos then solaris so c and bourne shell then moved into c++ and then quickly into java. then onto linux so bash.
Somewhere along the line I also got into perl, php, oracle development plus Oracle & MySQL databases. Bits of development I have done for PC are usually Borland C++, could not get on with the Microsoft visual c++.
As well as the above I am a project manager for a hosting centre with about 150 servers. for the companies Internet and intranet application, mainly built on linux and sun platforms.
BTW if your problems are of a Microsoft nature. Don't bother knocking on my door. I will only tell you to throw it out the window

Look after trading systems in the city Reuters, Bloomberg etc all the backend is on Unix so it very rarely (touch wood) crashes, client side is Windows XP so keeps me in a job.
Thank you Bill Gates for ensuring I'm never out of work!

Oh, a bit like "your the network guy aren't you".
Funny that, for years I thought my name was "Help", it's just when the 3rd line support guys couldn't do it and the projects were in deep dodo, the managers come running  asking for Help and it'd be me they wanted :?
Cheers Mark.

ha ha. Yeah. Basically.
Allright; so, there are lots of organisms who have their genomes sequenced, or partly sequenced.
I look through these data, and try to make patterns out of it, and predict things, and make experiments more efficient. (Bioinformatics.)
I also host and run a web site that distributes this information. So, I need databases, one called MySQL, and one called ACeDB. And I need something to allow people on the WWW to see the data in the database in a sensible way. A bit like the way this forum works. Very simple.
:)
I'm at the bottom end of the tree, Admin a small network on Server 2003 / Exchange 2003, looking to get into more networking.= so I'm actually using my degree.....
