I'm considering getting an Almax Immobiliser Series III 2m with the Squire Lock. These are the ones that "cannot" be cut with bolt cropers or frozen with chemicals.
Has anybody got one, or been tempted :?:

I've got one. In fact I've got a 2 metre and a 1.5 so that the 2 metre can go right around my bike while the 1.5 goes from there to my ground anchor. This was the setup recommended to me by the guy who runs almax, they are local to me.
The chains are heavy, its easy to believe that they are as good as rumoured. I REALLY didn't want anyone to steal my new bike when I got it last year.

Too heavy for me... Thor'll be along in a second to tell you how great they are ;) But they are, without a doubt, the best bike chain on the market. And by that I don't mean they're fantatic, neccesarily, just that 99% of all the chains out there are rubbish. Thatcham and Sold Secure for bike chains are both worthless, basically. (I use a dirt-cheap Oxford, because it's casual-thief resistant, and because any pro can get through most chains in moments with good croppers anyway)
They work... They can't be croppered- well, they can, but it takes several sets of blades- and they're even pretty resistant to hydraulics.
But the thing for me is that they're too big for me to carry around, and if I was only using a chain at home i'd get a bike garage or similiar instead of a chain.
Yes and they are solid! Bloody heavy too and only use mine at home in the garage
I'm only going by what people have told me. The guy at the R&G stand at the NEC was accross the way from the Almax stand and was pretty amazed at what he saw.
Kate and Joe have them. They are heavy!

I'm after a chain to work with the ground anchor I'm going to get installed in the garage.
Can you buy them online ?

Agreed, I usually only use them at home in the garage. They give me peace of mind. Only have a disk lock for when I'm out and about, fortunately for me I only use the sv for fun so never normally leave it anywhere other than in the garage!

Well even though the SV has an alarm, I want to put a decent chain on it as if I park in London, I can't be doing with the inconvenience of it getting nicked.
It's insured and all that, but at the end of the day having the bike stolen would be a major inconvenience, even though I've still got the 'Blade. If I have to park in a public bike park I'd rather but a serious chain on it.
I was thinking of the 2M jobbie, and using my Oxford chain bag on the rear seat, but you guys have me worried now, will that be strong enough to carry it ???

Thanks
I'm after two chains I want one to leave at work that I can use to chain the GSXR to during the day. Although theres lots of people walking about our security are rubbish and I dont trust them to be alert enough to somebody wheeling it into a van with the alarm going off.
Also I want to protect it whilst its in the garage overnight and a nice dirty big chain and a ground anchor is going to work well in conjunction with the alarm I'm having fitted to it.
I agree with Jelster yes its insured but I dont want the hassle of claiming off my insurance and having to pay out excess in the event of a theft.

Whats the difference between the CISA and the Squire locks ?
( sorry for hijacking your thread Jelster  )

Have you picked a 2m almax up at all Jelster? Ways a ton and is really best suited for a ground anchor.

If you're using it for parking at work (as in the same place everyday) why not leave the chain there?

I just think that the Squire is a better (more secure) padlock. I can't see the point of not spending a few extra quid and not getting a realy decent lock to put on your "ultimate" chain....

Only trouble with that is if someone wants your bike they can fill up the keyhole on the lock with araldite rapid, when you turn up you got no lock to use for a while.

Ah :(
Yes they are top notch chains! I have two from them, one for home and one I can carry as they are heavy. I would recommend a Motrax chain bag, or something similar, as the 2m chains fits perfectly into it and it goes on the pillion seat which is the best way to carry it really.
I would call them though as they are very friendly people, both Alan and Maxine, and when I told them I needed something to carry as well they let me have the lighter chain at cost price, it was so cheap it made me wonder how they justify such a huge mark up, but they gave me 10% off the heavier one too so I was very happy :D , top people!
just remember that a chain is only as good as the thing you are chaining it to. Its no good having the mother of all chains and you lock it to something that can be cut with bolt cutters/Angle grinder etc.
Can I just say that having watched the effort required to effectively use bolt croppers on a chain here;

I thought that it illustrated that you really should not leave any slack in your chain when locking your bike up. If you watch the video you'll notice the operator needed significant leverage which he got by putting one of the levers on the ground and using his body weight on the other. If your chain is clear off the ground and has little slack in it then it would be a LOT harder to cut the chain.
So while Almax chains may be harder to crop I'm not sure if it's worth paying the difference between it and the English chain shown in the video.
I don't know what the difference in price is though so feel free to enlighten me. If it's cnut all then for sure buy the Almax.

Nah, that's just how Zanx does it. The other guy who was demoing it at the bike show apparently puts one lever end on the ground but doesn't need to have the rest down. Makes no real difference to how the crops work, you just brace the lever on the ground at one end, and against a link of chain at the other.
English chain make a good chain though, it seems, and not as overpriced as many of the weaker ones. They'v just launched one which is crop proof, but it's more vulnerable to embrittlement.
(edit: I meant to say, this is all Almax's reports of the chain, which might be just a little open to bias ;) )
This has been an ongoing thing on VD, the guy in the video, Zanx, has been carrying on a one-man campaign for ages. At first I thought he was a self-glorifying fanatic, but I reckon he has a point. He also claims to be the person who brought the pen/lock situation to the attention to the press which, who knows, might be true.

I'm quite keen on buying the 2 metre package, I know the chain is good, and I have seen reccomendations for the hardie ground anchor, but anyone know anything about the squire 65sc lock? Has there been any attack tests done ?

I,ve been a member of www.visordown.com for some time now and i can honestly say zanx is not biased towards almax. Although he does recommend almax as one of the best chains out there currently, he attacks all sorts of chains (and pays for them himself so he isn't being paid to do this by alamx as far am i'm aware). For any more info have a look on the site and check out zanxs postings. If you do a search of Zanx's posts you'll also find the video in which he shows the pen/locking opening situation. (Have a search in the general forum)

Yup, exactly. It's easy to miss this in his messianistic zeal, it totally fooled me for a while... Plus, I was confusing him with that cretin ....zzzack as well, which didn't help ;)
