View Full Version : license query
before i waste my time sitting in a queue for ages to the DVLA
I passed my motorcycle license a couple of years ago in june and as yet haven't exchanged it for a full license yet. I have a pre-photocard car license.
i want to send off my test pass to avoid the retest.. i presume i'll need a photo card one or can i keep the paper one!?
i am totally unsure if i need to pay or not.. the form is totally unclear
Ring them, they are usually helpful. Or, you can write a letter to the local DVLA office.

I cant remember... is there nothing on the DVLA website that can help you ?
I think though that you'll need a photo card license, but as you are changing your entitlement it might well be free.
I know when I sent my paper license off a while ago because I had points that they exchanged it for a photo license for free

I'm sure there is something about how long you have from pass date to sending in off for a license.
Also, you will have to send in the old paper jobby as they issue you with a paper one with your photo one.
I'd look into it first and if you do call them be a bit cautious about dropping yourself in it.
You may find that you have x amount of time to get the new category on your license and if you dont do it in that time then you are not leaglly entitled to use that type of vehicle or some such.
hth
I thought you only had 2yrs to send in the test certificate otherwise it would become invalid and the test would have to be taken again.

When I original passed my test you had to pay for the photo card, but by the time it came to sending off my pass certs, it was free due to the "adding an other entitlement" section overriding the cost.
The best way is take it all to the post office and get them to check the form, check your IDs etc, only used to costs about £4 and it saves sending off your passport etc.

I think TSM is right you have 2 years to change your license and there is a charge for the pleasure of doing so, I would get a move on a sort this out if it was a couple of years ago.
I can also recomend using the post office check and send service this will ensure that all is correct and there should be no time delay it adds a small charge but is worth it for peace of mind.

TSM is correct.. You only 2 years from the pass date to get it fully authorized, otherwise it's take your test time again!

Cue twilight zone music
And i'd also use that post office service btw, my signature was a teeny tiny bit out of the box and the guy told me they wouldnt accept it. I was gonna send it anyway but he just said you only waste 4 or 5 days of your own time sending it and getting it back.
When I was learning a couple of years ago, there was a guy retaking his test because he forgot to send it (his license) off within the 2 years....D'Oh!
Phone the DVLA asap to see if you are still within the 2 years, if so nip down to the PO & use their checking service for the photo licence (if it's your first photo license they'll give you your identification docs back there and then).

Not sure if this will help but to change from a paper licence to a photo one is £19. I had to do this recently after getting married and changing my name :) I got everything back within 2 weeks so was quite impressed.

When my son & my other half sent their pass certificates away last year it was all free, you will only be issued a photocard licence now though but that is free also, just the expense of the photo's.
