I've been looking at This (http://pictures.autotrader.co.uk/ATD_web/servlet/media?id=276422513) for a mate to buy and repair, what is the "general damage" when a bike's a Cat D ??? i.e is there going to anything gone bang in the engine or is it just cosmetics on a Cat D ??? i know nothing about insurance  Part from they're all thieves in suits

Beyond economic repair, this could mean anything

It could be a few scuffs to panels, a crack or two? to the engine bottom end gone or the headstock ovalled :?: , you just don't know.
I wouldn't discount a write off, but a close inspection would be needed by some one who knows what they are doing, even then the price would have to be right to cover what you can't see and could still be wrong.

without the skills to know what you're looking at it's a roll of the dice

Cheers Mark.

So if i convinced a Honda mechanic friend to come and have a gander at it, it could turn out to be a cheap fix with just panels broken/scuffed.

After reading this
Category D - Repairable salvage. Minimal damage, probably not structural, but insurer does not want to repair, even though it might be economic to do so. Often stolen and recovered after claim has been paid. Or for unusual models or grey imports where the difficulty of obtaining new parts hinders a quick repair. Does not need VIC inspection to return to road. Recorded with HPI, AA, and the like.

I think i might have to have a closer look at it. £1495 they're asking. if it turns out to be a dud, most of parts look good, and those win high levels would be oh so cool on mine 8)

Cheers for the input fellas :D

Probably stolen and recovered after the insurance co has paid out. Damage could be anything but should only be cosmetics. Could be worth it if its cheap. I paid £1100 for a cat D 1999 unfaired curvy with tax and a years MoT. Theres nothing wrong with it at all. Bear in mind after you fix it up it will always be cat D and will always be worth less than a "straight" bike.

It's for a friend who's after a cheap bike to start out on and probably it will get dropped and repaired a few times till he's less accident prone so it won't really matter that it'll be worth less.

Again thaks for input :D

If you buying a CAT D to keep it's worth it, in a few years time even bikes that havn't been written off won't be worth much so a cat D won't be worth a lot less, it would probably be the same. I bought back my damaged repairable CBR 400rr years ago and it served me very well!

Bargains can be had because Cat D's are for some reason looked down on, even though there is rarely anything wrong with them ( I heard of a 3 month old Harley being written off because the starter motor got water in it from a big puddle and wouldn't start! ) if there is nothing wrong with the bike then the cat D label means nothing andyou shouldn;t worry about it.

I have bought a category D sv650s before, off this forum infact. I didn't have any problems selling on the bike but that may be because the buyer didn't really have much idea about write offs and what not (I did tell him).

Can be good money makers if you get a decent deal, I bought mine for something like £1200 and sold it on for £1200 after using it for a good while and sold off the extras, making me £700. :D

I was tempted by that write off actually. £1400 should get you it as chances are they've had it for a while and will have problems moving it.
