I was due to go on one of these courses in January. Unfortunately it got cancelled the day before due to lack of interest.

I would still like to do one and thought to make sure that the next one did not get cancelled I would see if I could round up some interest and get people booked on the course.

This is obviously for people that live in or close enough to travel to Reading.

The next course lined up is for April 15th 0900 - 1300. The cost of the course is £35 plus VAT.

The course is run by the St Johns Ambulance.

If anyone would be interested in attending this course could you let me know. I am going to book on the course in any case. Just as I say, would prefer if it were not cancelled again

You're quite right to  your eyes there mate, thats shocking that no-one would take much of an interest in the course. I'd be down there in a flash if I didn't live in glasgow! If anyone reading this knows of said courses in scotland, please let me know.

Bristol, Sedbergh, Whitehaven, Kendal and Reading are none of them exactly convenient. Shame :(

It's a nice ride to Bristol from Shrewsbury. I did it, albeit in car, in the other direction one day when I had time. Left a customer in Bristol around lunch time. Had a late lunch in a cafe at Tintern by the Wye, then up to Shrewsbury and on to Deeside where I had an appointment the next morning.

When I booked last time, I paid when I booked the course, but payment wasn't actually taken. I believe they do it this way as it will save from having to refund if the course is cancelled. They only go ahead and take payment from your card once they are sure the course is going ahead.

Ohhh, now this is something I would love to take part in if I hadn't turned so squeemish in my old age!

I've tried to take my first aid certificate twice now and never made it to the final exam. I'm great at the theory, but as soon as they start talking about crush injuries I go all wonky. The first time I managed to give the whole class a practical demonstration on what to do when someone faints and falls off thier chair!

It's agreat thing to see though, something specifically dealing with bikers - after all, so many people are ignorant of whether to remove crash helmets etc.

To be honest, after the course, I would find it useful if you could at least post up a few 'basic guidelines' on stuff like that. Or at the very least PM in case of potential complications for the site.

Well as I said, I shall be booking on the course regardless. I would though like to know those that have actually booked, just to see how much interest there is. If there is no interest again, I think I shall have to look at a different venue.

For all those that want to attend the one in Reading, I would be glad to host coffee and sandwiches back at my house after the event.

Well if the interest shown so far comes to fruit, then I see no reason why it should be cancelled again.

Thanks all, and remember, please do this if you can. One day it could be one of your mates that needs the help and you will be the one able to provide it.

I phoned today and 8 people so far have booked on the course. Not sure if this enough interest to ensure the course will go ahead. But it is encouraging

Advice is fine and better than nothing, and whilst I'd agree st Johns is'nt the best out there, course let you get "hands on" which is far more memorable than just talk.

Big up to all you lot, everyone should have this stuff.

Just think on this, I've 14 year frontline Ambulance service, but if I ever need it myself, I'm not likely to be able to use it  , then it's all down to whom ever I'm ridding with :?:

For those that are intending to come back to mine after the course, we will be able to ask all the questions and queries that arose and did not get answered during the course.

Mark (Rictus) has kindly volunteered to offer his experience and knowledge which is vast to say the least, and answer those questions back at mine over sandwiches and coffee.

Mark, a big thank you for this.

I have been told that the course is now fully booked. (12 people). However it may be worth putting your name down as a stand in name should anyone decide not to turn up or cancel.

You can always make your way to my place for about 1.30pm on the day, where no doubt you will probably learn just as much as those that attended the course.

Sandwiches and drink are on offer at my house after the course.

Does your local amulance service not run a http://www.lancashireambulance.com/Images/Commercial%20Training/LOGO1.jpg (http://www.lancashireambulance.com/Category.asp?cat=1143) course. Personally I would rather attend a course run by practicing paramedics than by well meaning amatuers.

One of the guys I ride with is a paramedic and trainer with GMAS. If I was ever to go down, I would hope he was around.

As he says.

Paramedics, life savers, heart breakers.
Nurses, bed makers, life takers.

Myself being a former qualifyed ambulance trainer I'd agree, but in this case any training is better than waiting for the "best" course to come around. Not all ambulance services run this type of thing, and I know my old one only did occasionally, most of their courses were "first aid at work" stuff.

One of the guys I ride with is a paramedic and trainer with GMAS. If I was ever to go down, I would hope he was around.

when your out in your group, what can you do if the accident happens to him  (do you really want to be stood around for the 8 minutes or so (if your lucky) waiting on the ambulance with your mobile watching your friend or loved one pass away knowing you could do something, but don't know how :?: ).

So have you done training? or are you just waiting for the right course  ?

I wouldn't discourage anyone from any training in this field, as it's the most unselfish of things to do, and everyone should know the basics, if I'm ever in the postion to need this type of intervention, I really don't care where it was learn, more the case someone doing something, securing an airway, a very simple thing can save a life if you know how, if you don't "they" die :!: and that "they" could be me or you

Cheers Mark.

I agree entirely that any training is better than none. I was really trying to make the point that there are alternatives and whilst many will know of St Johns as an organisation who promote first aid training. I don't think people are aware that their local ambulance service may also run courses for Joe Public.

I am currently trying to book on the FBoS course run by Lancs on 30th June. I have also requested details to post here of their dates for the South East (Brands Hatch) as advertised on their web site as this links to an empty word document.

Anything that encourages people to go and get training is a good thing, I'd only add, don't "try to" or "looking into" or "considering which is best", do in NOW :!:

If unlike myself you can predict when you're going to need it then just call the anbulance before leaving for the ride, or don't go  .

My point any information Now is better than the best course in the world next week.

Well. Been there and done it.

Thoughts are as follows:

It was very informative. It covered just about every likely encounter that you could possibly come across in the event of an accident.

We were taught about all aspects of an accident. From the obvious 1st aid, to traffic control, avoiding further dangers, and how to properly report the incident to the emergency services.

I personally didn't expect to learn anything from the course. I didn't. But then having spent 12 years in the army and also having been a driving instructor, I didn't expect to. I was most impressed with what was covered though. There was enough detail but not too much. It did exactly what is said it would on the tin.

I'm sure that there could possibly be better out there, but personally I think what was taught on the course would be enough to allow someone that knew previously nothing, to be able to save a life should the need be required or administer 1st aid.

Thanks Ian for allowing me to be the first volunteer of the day. The push in the back was well timed.

Thank you also to the BBC for interviewing me. I only hope that they either decide that I was so crap that they don't air it or that no one ever gets to see it and recognises me.
