Today is the day that I part company with my one remaining vehicle, my dear little car

http://upload3.postimage.org/10525/P2190028.jpg (http://upload3.postimage.org/10525/photo_hosting.html)

Whilst I'm not as emotionally attached to it as I was to my bike, this is nevertheless going to mean a significant shift in lifestyle - probably the biggest change I've had to face so far as a result of my vision loss.

So I am now offically pedestrian, publicly transported and a major-league bummer of rides. I promise not to step off the pavement without looking both ways first, but cannot account for the actions of London bus drivers or black cabs  .

And for those of you who have forgotten, or weren't here to witness it, I was a biking goddess!

May you have sped through all the Gatsos on the wy home yesterday from Hastings!!

Im sure that there will always be a line of pillon pads and passenger seats lined up outside your residence.

Still a sad day though. :(

Indeed you were once one of the wonderful hooligans of the Massive, sorry to hear this Debs, at least you know there'll always be a pillion for you. The good news is it'll be cheaper and you can always be gently inebriated ;).

Well Debs it was great to see you yesterday, it has to be good to know that the last great trip in the car helped frozen bikers to enjoy a good hot cup of coffee at Hastings, a genuine red cross effort!

I and many others here I'm sure would be more than happy to give you lifts over the summer if we're going somewhere good 8)

I'm sad today had to come for you, but I'm happy to see how we'll you're dealing with it.

Be proud of yourself and remember: Once a biker, always a biker 8)

What Lee said, I've had some vision problems before and what I have wrong with my right eye if it escalates could lead to blindness. When I first found out about it I was absoloutly sh*tting myself. I can relate to what you've been going through.

Take care of yourself

Hi Debs

Shame about the car but at least you can ride in bus lanes now.

You took the time to be there for me when I was in a mess so if you ever need anything just shout and I will obey your every wish and desire.

I work in Kings Cross now so thats not to far from you.

You were a biking Goddess, I realised that after trying to follow you from The Bridge to Parliment Square one Friday night.

Take care and next time your in Soho let me know as I am looking for an excuse to turn up. (and if you neeed a lift of course)

See you soon
Rob

Oh dear...

We will have to form the Soho Massive foot patrol squad, not as exciting as a bike I know, and the fact that I cant walk properly and you cant see properly dont help but i'm sure we will manage.... Before long we will have more members and more fun than the Soho Massive bike section and they will all get rid of thier bikes and join us walking around Soho bumping into things and falling over.

Or perhaps not.

Chin up and try to keep smiling.

Can I ask why it is you've had to give up both car and bike?

A friend of mine is blind in 1 eye but is allowed to drive still? Or is it something else.

nae bother, just being nosey

I have a condition that means I have lost about 50% vision in my right eye, and the left is about to go into decline. So I've packed up riding and driving before it's too late and something nasty happens.

The DVLA will let me drive (I still have a valid license for both until the end of the year), but my common sense and the advice of my consultant at Moorfields would have it otherwise.

Its strange that they have said to stop completly though.

Used to be funny as it was my friends left eye. So we could sit in the passanger seat, waving a set of fingers in a V shape  and he wouldn't see us lol....

But it hasn't effected he driving that bad.

But mind you, i suppose if it were your right eye, thats the eye that fist see's your mirror/blind spot etc so i guess its understandable.

Not sure I'd want to be a passenger in a car where the driver couldn't see a hazard approaching. I think the DVLA have a lot to answer for by letting us on the road.

As a friend of mine puzzled the other week - "You're a safe driver, why stop?" But he agreed that having good road sense is useless without being able to see properly.

Do you mind if I ask what your condition is called sounds very similar to what I've got wrong with my right eye. My condition is called "Coates Diesease"

I think you're being very sensible in giving up by the way

Your welcome I think :D

The specialist I go to see talks alot about macular degeneration in my right eye. Its caused by the blood vessels in my retina bleeding into my eye and then the blood clots and leaves ripples across the retina which then distorts the vision.

Sounds like you have 'wet' MD, which is fixable. I have 'dry' MD, which isn't. How old are you?

Have a look at the RNIB and Moorfields websites, they have some really good specialist info on the conditions on there.

Yep the specialist said it was fixable but as my eye is stable he recommended to leave it be as he was worried about causing a catarrach ( sp ) on my right eye.

I have "Coates Disease" normally it effects children but I have it to, The specialist thinks I might have always had it and only noticed it as I've got older

thanks for the info on those websites I'll take a look
